When does the nesting instinct kick in?

I've heard that nesting can feel either like just a nice random urge to clean the kitchen to a manic Adderal-like frenzy where you start rekaulking the tub and moving furniture. I could use either end of the spectrum right now. I'm 14weeks 2days. This pregnancy has made me so lazy and unmotivated which is not like me. My place is a mess and I want to clean but my body won't let me.

When do you start "nesting"?

Re: When does the nesting instinct kick in?

  • Its usually the end of the second trimester, beginning of the third. :)

  • For me - never.
  • Last pregnancy it just made me ultra crafty. Don't think I have time for that this time with a very busy 16 month old. I couldn't clean much because we were packing house to move 13 days after I gave birth.

I'm 14w2d as well, and I kind of have the instinct but I don't have any motivation! Haha
  • I had the urge to remove all of our light fixtures and thoroughly clean them as well as wiping all of our cabinet shelves. Went into labor that night :)

  • That was at exactly 38 weeks and it was the only real nesting I had any urge to do

  • Never did with #1, I'm already more motivated this time, but I wouldn't call is nesting yet.

  • It's usually towards the end when you're like Oh crap! I have so much stuff to do & this baby will be here before we know it!
  • For me its usually the last 2 months of pregnancy, hardcore the last month...serious urge to clean and organize everything. :)
  • Thanks y'all. I'm hoping to at least get my energy back since I just got into the second tri. Can't wait to power clean and get everything ready for this kiddo!
  • My mom just started randomly giving me baby things. I got the car seat today. All I wanna do is stare at it and imagine a tiny baby inside. I'm 17w 2days.
  • I hope it kicks in soon too.. I've just been sooo lazy and lying around all day and night. Just don't feel like doing a thing. Just entered 2 tri and all I do is lie around and read/browse all day.
  • I didn't really with DD. We did some projects and put together her room in no particular timeline or fashion, and when she arrived, I kept adding to it and making it fit for her. One of my friends didn't really "nest" with her son, either, but she's 4 weeks away from baby #2 and says she's had a lot of strong urges to reorganize and wash lots of laundry and paint rooms. Perhaps it'll strike you, and maybe it won't! Try to find rationale for doing little things on a checklist each week, and you won't feel so overwhelmed by laziness or the need to be overactive in a frenzied approach to preparing.

With DD, I didn't really understand the idea of "nesting" anyway, since all I know I needed was the carseat, a place for her to sleep, diapers, and wipes. Beyond that, everything else could wait. She wouldn't know the nursery color scheme nor would she know if we had the latest model of stroller; all of that was for me. Don't let Pinterest intimidate you into feeling like you have to nest ;)

  • I don't really have the urge to extreme clean other than I do plan to have the carpets cleaned (but I do once a year anyway). I have enjoyed ordering a glider and researching strollers/car seats, along with some minimal decor for the baby room walls. I'm more preparing my mind and body with healthy (Smart) parenting articles and proper eating/workouts!
