Birth Control options

Hey all you new moms out there! I had my 6 week PP checkup and my dr. talked to me about birth control options. I went in there pretty certain that I wanted to get the Skyla IUD. I then talked to some friends and asked them what they had chosen. A lot of my friends have decided not to go back to any birth control method aside from condoms. I honestly hate using condoms, my DH and I were just never very good with them.

A friend told me that two girls she knows have had IUDs and both are now having trouble TTC. One had the Mirena and one had the Paraguard. One girl already has two kids and cannot get pregnant again now that her IUD is out. The other had an ectopic pregnancy and now is having trouble TTC. I've tried to do some research online to find out more about these kinds of issues but I cannot find any testimonials or anything past just getting the IUD put in. Reading about getting it inserted is enough to scare me out of doing it too because all the reviews you read say how much it hurts or the strings were cut too short etc. etc.

I was going to go back on the pill since that's what I was on before getting pregnant. I am breastfeeding however. I know there is a type of pill that is out there for breastfeeding moms that does not have the estrogen hormone, its just progesterone. I had another friend say she ended up avoiding the pill because of side effects she read about and i'm not sure what she meant by that.

I'm so confused about what I want to do now. I do not want to get pregnant again for at least 1-1.5 years. But i don't want to start some type of birth control that will eventually make it difficult for me to get pregnant again. Can anyone give me any insight to what they have done or experience they have with trying to conceive again after being back on some type of birth control.

Re: Birth Control options

  • After my daughter, I used the nuvaring. I loved it because I only had to worry about putting it in once a month, and you can't really feel it in there. No issues with ttc after it either. Got pregnant the 2nd month of trying. P.s safe to breastfeed with, as its a low hormone birth control.

  • I used the nuvaring after my 2nd. And 6 months later i was pregnant with my 3. Alot of ppl that i have tlkd to about it has had friends/family get pregnant on it. :(
  • I got the skyla IUD and my doctor said he inserts that one more than any other because it is smaller than mirena. He said that the moment he takes it out then you are able to get pregnant again without trouble. He said he has had many people get pregnant soon after taking it out. I wonder if your friends had trouble because of other factors as well?? Who know...either way I chose to get the skyla because I am breastfeeding and I cant remember to take a pill at the same time every day. We were doing "condums/pull out and pray method" before and we gave in one drunken time and sure enough I now have an almost 2 month old sooooo I chose to get the IUD this time.

  • I'm getting the paragaurd. I didn't want to do pills again because I don't trust myself to remember to take the pill, plus I hate how the pill has made me feel in the past. The hormones have always made me emotional & irrational at times. Plus I like that I'll have the reassurance of my period that I'm not pregnant. On the horrifying stories - people are always more willing to share something that was abnormal or against plan.
You could always go with the shot. It's safe for breast feeding plus you don't have to remember to take it at the same time every day, just get a shot every 12 weeks. The warning that my doctor gave with that was to take a calcium +D supplement with it.
  • So I'm a condom user over here but I thought I would mention my friend's story. She used the nuvaring after her first was born and got pregnant with her second while using It. So it's definitely not fail proof. But it doesn't seem to cause issues TTC!
  • I got pregnant on the nuvaring. What about implanon. i know lots of people who like it. It wasnt for me, but my body hates birth control..so my husband got fixed
  • I used depo before and loved it but couldn't remember the calcium. After several years I broke my foot and blamed the shots impact on my bones so I quit. Used implanon but after first year got frequent yeast infections so I had it removed early, same with a friend of mine. Considering mirena this time
  • I was having a hard time with this decision last week. I ended up going with Mirena. It's been a little over a week now. First of all, it didn't hurt at all when it was put in. After reading a ton about this IUD, it clearly says that it's recommended for women who have already had a baby. This is because your cervix is more than likely still dilated a bit and doesn't hurt like it will for someone who hasn't been through that. I also read all the horrifying reviews on how much it hurt, but almost all of them where women who haven't had kids yet. I also read that it does not cause infertility issues and saw lots of stories about women getting pregnant immediately after removing it. Now I can't vouch for that part yet, but I feel like the chances of it causing issues are rare. The IUD is actually the most popular form of birth control in the world...it just got a bad rep in the U.S. due to earlier versions that weren't quite as great and the ones out there now. I have had spotting since insertion, and it's been heavier the last couple days now. My CNM said if you can get through the first 2-3 months of random spotting and cramping, it's very worth it. She also said she has way less women coming in to have the IUD removed because they don't like it than she does with Implanon/Nexplanon. I can feel a poke every so often with the strings, but they soften up over time and eventually won't even be noticeable. Hope this helps!
  • I had the Mirena IUD prior to my pregnancy. It hurt a lot going on but the bad pain didn't last long and the cramping went away after a weekend. I had my IUD out and was pregnant a week later. My best friend had the same experience both with the pain and the ease of getting pregnant after. However when she got her IUD put back in at her 6 week visit she said it didn't hurt even close to the first time - it does go in easier after baby.
  • Thank you for all the input ladies! This definitely helps. Still not exactly sure what I want to do but I appreciate you taking the time to share :)
