TTC after 35

CoQ10?

Hi ladies,
I've been doing some reading about improving egg quality and CoQ10 keeps coming up. Reputable sources that I trust (WebMD) clearly state there is no evidence that it boost egg quality, but reputable clinics also publicly recommend it. Have any of you tried it?

TIA,
FemShep

Re: CoQ10?

  • I haven't been on it long enough to know, but my doctor recommended it.  I've been on it since February.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • I take ubiquinol which is the bio available form of CoQ10. It's easier for your body to use.
I have been taking it for over a year and have not gotten pregnant so not sure about the egg quality part but it's just a good supplement to take.
It is found in every cell of the body and as we get older it decreases. Also if you take any cholesterol med you should be taking it also.

      Me:39, DH:40

DD born 8/96, DS born 8/04

  • I pulled out the book my doctor gave me about egg quality.  It looks like there haven't been any large scale human trials to see if it works.  There have been plenty of studies that show that healthy mitochondria is critical to egg health, and there have been studies that show that CoQ10 helps to build healthy mitochondria.  Mitochondria contribute to the "energy" of a cell, and it's really important when the egg does all the cell-splitting and implantation in the first few weeks after fertilization.

It looks like studies on mice have been promising (particularly mice who are a bit old to be getting pregnant, to try to predict how it might help women over 35). They've also found higher levels of CoQ10 in women undergoing IVF who have created higher quality eggs.

So there's enough science to suggest that the supplements might help, even if large scale human trials haven't been done, yet.  And there doesn't appear to be any reason to think it could hurt.  I'm all in favor of doing whatever science *suggests* might help, especially if it's something that will at least benefit my health overall.  For what it's worth, I've also been put on vitamin D supplements (I was deficient) and DHEA.

(I was a little unsure about DHEA, since it did make me a bit cranky when I started, but after some research, decided that it wouldn't hurt, and might help, so I'll stick with it.)

One thing I understand about CoQ10, though, is that when you take it now, you are giving a boost to the eggs you might ovulate in 3 to 4 months from now.  If it works, it takes some time to work.

The book I'm reading is "It Starts with an Egg" by Rebecca Fett.  Fett has a degree in molecular biotechnology and biochemistry, and is now a patent lawyer specializing analyzing scientific and clinical evidence for biotech companies.  And my doctor really likes the book.  So there's at least two people way brainier (at science) than I am who think CoQ10 is helpful, which is good enough for me!

  • @dolphin012 From what I've read, it's 400-800mg/day, with 400-600 the most common dosage.
  • I believe "it starts with the egg" recommends 300 mg/day.

I believe the format is also important. Because ubiquinol is more easily absorbed, you only need half the dosage you would take in ubiquinone. So it would make sense that you would take 300mg of ubiquinol or 600mg of ubiquinone.

But clearly, we're not doctors. :)

  • I have been taking CoQ10 for the past few months, and have done a lot of reading online as well. I'm not sure if it improves egg health - I think it just prevents egg deterioration (aging). But worth a try! It's great for cardiovascular health as well! You should check the dosage of the supplement you take to make sure you are getting enough mg of it to be effective.

  • I take it as part of my cardiovascular support regimen. I get it from Premier Research Labs as theirs is live-source based instead of synthetic, as all their products.
    Anniversary
  • I just started taking it.
