Restaurant veggies

Does anyone else feel nervous about eating fresh veggies at restaurants? Someone told me that they rarely wash vegetables at restaurants, and if they do it's just a rinse under water. Makes me nervous because I keep reading about how well all vegetables and fruits should be washed before eating when prego.

What? They cook them? And where'd you hear they don't wash them? Every restaurant I ever worked at washed all fruit/veg.

The solution is to cook at home if you are so worried?

  • I know that cooked veggies are safe, and I eat as many as I can get. I'm talking about fresh vegetables such as in salads or on burgers or sandwiches. I heard from someone who works in a cafe that fresh fruits and vegetables are not always washed, that's all. Anything you read will tell you that fresh produce should be wash thoroughly before eating, especially when pregnant.
  • The only thing i miss terribly in my pregnancy are salads. My doctor does not allow them as we cannot be sure just how well-washed they are. I can only make them at home :((
  • I wouldn't worry too much. If you worry about everything you eat, you'd have literally nothing to eat during pregnancy. Enjoy food.
  • I was an apprentice chef for a year, everything was washed very well.

You can't shy away from everything just because one person in a thousand has had a reaction to it. If we didn't eat everything we were told not to eat we would have to starve. I am happy and have no health issues what so ever and my mother did what she wanted.

I am a chef and have worked in many restaurants. We all took good care of the veggies. If your concerned about it, then you should probably eat at nicer places. Also they all post health food scores, if not in the restaurant then online.

This exactly. I can understand being very cautious about purchasing a meal from a food truck, but I'm pretty confident when I spend $10 on salad, someone has washed the vegetables.

@ChristyM87 I'm pretty sure she was being sarcastic. But I do agree with you

Sounds like you just need to avoid that person's place of work. The vast majority of reputable restaurants utilize proper food handling techniques and one of the basics is washing vegetables. Most restaurant chefs and owners don't actually WANT people to get sick from eating their food!

I don't care how nice the restaurant is, I still don't trust them all. I had brunch at a 5-star restaurant today. My meal came with fresh fruit. The grapes still had the powdery-like substance on them that you find when they come straight out of the bag. Listeria just scares me. I know I'm being overly paranoid but I'm already immune-deficient, so I totally get where you're coming from OP. I'm usually not like this and I have eaten fresh fruits and veggies out, a lot, but sometimes I just get a bad feeling about places! Yep, definitely a worrier! :(

Say what? My grapes from the grocery store never have a powdery substance on them.

Well these did. And it tasted bitter, so I didn't eat more than one!

I've been working in restaurants since I started my professional student career (I have 2 degrees and will be going for a college diploma after baby is born because I don't know what I want to do with my life), and I can tell you that every restaurant I have worked for has washed their vegetables and has washed their fruits. I currently manage a steak house and can tell you that our KM and AKM are always all over the prep guys about proper food handling and cleanliness... because we don't want a lawsuit... and not washing them is just plain gross. People sue for everything now and a bogus claim of food poisoning is awful for business. I would just avoid the cafe where your friend works.

Mine actually often do, too. I'm not sure why...
  • It's usually either wax or just natural dust or mildew that settles on fruit. Not particularly appetizing, but not harmful either.
  • Unfortunately, i cant risk not listening to my doctor...
  • The white power on grapes is pesticide. I am trying so hard not to eat out because finding organic or non-GMO options is next to impossible. Pesticides are so bad for fetuses, and boys seem to be especially susceptible to them.

Fear mongering... Dude. Eat your food. You have more toxins breathing air & driving your car. For real-- I want to bet a million dollars you are anti-vaxx too? I bet donuts!

It is not fear mongering at all. I recently wrote a paper using peer-reviewed research studies on the subject. I was not like this about organic my first two pregnancies, but after all that I have learned I certainly am this time. It isn't fair to call it fear mongering because I refuse to remain ignorant about our food here in the U.S. I have done my (extremely thorough) research from real studies, have you?

And no I am not anti-vax at all. Both of my daughters have all of their vaccines and got them when the pediatrician said it was time. But thank you for assuming that I am some sort of anti-everything person just because I have my eyes open about the dangers of pesticides in our food.

Why are some women here so judgmental?! Good grief. Ridiculous.

  • This looks fuzzy. Not like what I'm referring to at all.

  • You are sadly mistaken if you believe there is not pesticide residue on grapes and other produce.

Unfortunately I hardly ever buy grapes anymore because it is so hard to find organic! Sometimes I cave and get them anyway, but in general, all my fruits and veggies are organic (except perhaps bananas, since we are obviously able to peel off the skin -- if you read this comment, with your research, is this okay, or is it really better to buy organic bananas anyway? DH is in an MBA program so our budget is a bit tight right now, but if it's very important we'll buy organic bananas, too... I'm sure you've done more research on this than me, although I've done some...). But yes, when we eat out, I'm sure we eat mostly non-organic, which is unfortunate.

Oh, and @PrimRoseMama -- your comment wasn't directed at me, but I just wanted to say that I try to eat as natural and organic as possible, and I am strongly pro-vaccination! I don't find the two mutually exclusive :)

I never buy organic bananas either. Fruits and veggies that are not peeled before eating are the most crucial to buy organic, as you alluded to. I don't buy organic mandarins/oranges/tangerines, but always wash the outside well before peeling to avoid transferring the pesticide residue on to the fruit with my fingers. Bananas are awesome since you never have to touch the fruit. My favorite produce wash is BioKleen...I think Target carries it now, but I have always gotten it from my local health food store. Best of luck to your husband with his MBA! I recently finished my Master's and it is such a good feeling to cross the finish line. Good luck with your pregnancy too!
