10 weeks and no heartbeat on fetal doppler

I heard the heartbeat at my first US at 8 1/2 weeks. I went to the gyno this week for my 10 week appointment and the doctor couldn't find the heartbeat using the fetal doppler. She said that everything else looked find and was where it was suppose to be. I have another US on Monday, but Im freaking out. Has anyone had trouble at 10 wks hearing the heartbeat using a fetal doppler? (I had a miscarriage in Dec at 12 wks, so Im extra nervous!)

Re: 10 weeks and no heartbeat on fetal doppler

  • They never can find the HB on me prior to 12 weeks. I have a tilted ute and have had an anterior placenta w both of my kids. I went for my 10 wk appt and sure enough they couldn't find it w baby 3.Try not to stress. Easier said than done though.

  • Thank you. That makes me feel better. Im trying to stay relaxed.
  • My OB did an ultrasound for both my 6 week initial appointment and 11 week appointment because the fetal Doppler he uses can't detect heartbeat before 12-13 weeks.
  • My doctor doesn't look for the heartbeat at of 10w appointments because it is not always found with a Doppler at that point. They wait until the 14w appointment. Try not to stress!
  • They couldn't find it with my daughter at 10 weeks.  I had an anterior placenta too.

  • I had the same fear. I had my ultra sound at 9 weeks and everything was fine. Couldn't find the heartbeat on the Doppler at 10 weeks. My Dr warned me that it may be too early to hear it and I also have a tilted uterus which makes it even harder to hear. I know it's hard to not be concerned. I will worry until I hear it. I am 12 weeks tomorrow and we don't go back until I am 15 weeks!
  • I think it's ridiculous that they even tried honestly! It's so hit or miss that early. At the VERY least they should have warned you beforehand and then immediately followed up with an ultrasound if the Doppler couldn't pick it up. I'd be livid if a doctor left me in limbo like that.

  • I had an OB appointment today (11 weeks) and the doctor couldn't find a hb. I hadn't had an ultrasound or anything yet so I was freaking out. The doctor got me in for an ultrasound a few hours later. On the ultrasound I could see my little peanut wiggling around with a nice strong heartbeat :). The doctor said my uterus may be tipped back or maybe baby was hiding behind one of my arteries so he could only get my hb and not baby's. OP, I hope this turns out to be the case for you too!
  • She probably warned me beforehand, but it still made me nervous given I have miscarried in Dec 2014
  • Oh good! I will stay positive :) I hope it is just that it was too early or my little peanut was too far back. Thanks, ladies!

Stay positive. My friend couldn't hear the heart beat with the office doppler at 13 weeks. Every one is different.

By dr never looks beforehand because he doesn't want to stress me out.
  • I had an appointment yesterday at 10 weeks 3 days and my doctor couldn't find a heartbeat either. She told us before she started that it is totally normal to not be able to hear it on the doppler this early. I also have a tilted uterus so that makes it a little more difficult. She said we have nothing to be worried about especially since I have all day morning sickness daily.
  • That is totally normal. I know a lot of doctors won't even attempt trying to find the heartbeat with the doppler until 12-14 weeks because it's very hard to find it before then. We couldn't hear my sons heartbeat with the doppler until around 13 weeks, but did see it at 175bmp on an ultrasound at 8 weeks.

  • I had my 10 week appointment last week and the doc couldn't find the heartbeat either. She followed up right after with an US and they baby was moving all around and had a strong heartbeat. I can totally understand the worry but it is common.

  • Anterior placenta here for both pregnancies. DD1 was hard to find hb till closer to 20 weeks. Always took them awhile.
  • I just heard the heartbeat yesterday at 10w5d but it did take her a while to find it (and I'm very petite). I hope you'll find relief at your appointment on Monday!
  • Dont worry, OP. I had an appt earlier this week where my OB said she could hear the hb with her doppler. I couldnt though - al I could hear was my blood pumping through a nearby vessel. She explained that it was veey early to even try the doppler at all and she wouldnt even try for anyone under 10 weeks. I was lucky that she was kind enough to do an U/S to give me peace of mind.

  • Couldn't find mine at 12 weeks. She said she heard it faintly for a second, but not enough to confirm so she did a quick ultrasound. Sure enough there was little baby kicking and swimming around.
  • My dr also doesn't check for hb with doppler until later. I can't remember exactly when but I go in again at 13 weeks and a few days and I won't be surprised if she doesn't try then.
I heard it on an ultrasound yesterday but had to ask the tech...she wasn't my favorite.
Try to relax this weekend knowing that is totally normal and look forward to your u/s next week :)
  • I had my 11 week today and Dr couldnt get heartbeat with Doppler then did a U/S on my stomach and still nothing. Lastly he did vaginal and found the baby! Give it a couple weeks or request a vaginal U/S.
  • My OB couldn't find mine at 10 weeks. Ultrasound was fine.
  • in the UK they don't check you with a Doppler til your 16 week appt as that's when it's most likely to be picked up, I wouldn't worry :)
  • Mine was tough to catch all the way through my pregnancy due to being overweight and an anterior placenta. Try not to stress.
  • They won't check mine until 16 weeks (again UK). She said she could try, but given I've had 2 miscarriages she refused as she knew I'd just worry if she didn't find anything.
  • My Dr. told me there's only a 30% chance of hearing it on the doppler at 10 weeks
  • We couldn't hear heartbeat with doppler at my 10.5 week but I remember hearing hb at 9 weeks with first pregnancy. Dr. wasn't concerned.
  • I had my appointment on Wednesday at 10w5d, and we did find the heartbeat on the Doppler, but my OB was telling me that it's more common not to find it at this stage. We only tried because we saw the heart flickering away on the quick bedside ultrasound that we did. (I just asked for a quick peek instead of scheduling a separate appointment.) Try not to stress, even though I know that's easier said than done! Hugs.
  • Thank you everyone for the reassurance. I go back Monday afternoon for an US and Im staying positive after all of your experiences. :)
  • Just had my ultrasound this afternoon and my little bean is doing well. Her heartbeat is at 180! I can now relax for a little bit. Im only 10 weeks and 4 days, so it will be a little longer u ntil I feel out of the woods.
  • I went to my doctor last week at 9.5 weeks and my doctor couldn't find the heartbeat either with the fetal doppler (I have a uterus that tilts back too)...she said it was not unusual at all to not hear it with doppler at this point (and she told me this before we tried with the doppler), so she sent me for an quick ultrasound to listen to the heartbeat.  Everything was a great!  They found a heartbeat of 166 BPM, so I would definitely not worry especially if your doctor is not worried!
  • Please don't take this as rude but I was reading that if some mommies have extra "padding" in their tummy area it can be hard to find. The Dr may recommend a vaginal Ultrasound. Keep us updated hun!

  • i heard a heartbeat at 12 weeks! don't worry. :)
  • I'm sure everything will be ok, your baby could just be facing in and it's hard to detect the hb somtimes that early. When I went for my son's appointment at 10 weeks, the doc couldn't fit it either and I had an ultrasound and he was in there and measuring 14 weeks lol!
