Pregnant after IF

C-section scheduled (Seriously, doc?)

Okay - I am pretty frustrated / irritated.

Given that I went through an unplanned c-section with DD, it was a little nice to know at least this go round would be a scheduled c-section with the twins.  We have no family close by so it would be much easier to have a date as opposed to a surprise so my mom can come to watch DD.

Of course my doctor, under the "new guidelines", will only schedule me after 39 weeks.  39 weeks for me is a Sunday, and they only schedule c-sections for Wed/Thurs/Friday.  So you guessed it - I am scheduled for 39+3 --> July 29th.

As a point of reference, DD was born at 38 weeks.  And she was 9 lbs, 2 oz.

What do you think are the odds of me making it to a scheduled c-section at 39+3 with twins?  I am betting that it will not happen.  And I will be going into labor, rushing to the hospital, scrambling to find someone to watch DD.  Just freaking great...sorry for the rant.  But this whole pregnancy has been an exhausting journey.

Re: C-section scheduled (Seriously, doc?)

  • I feel your frustration! I honestly can't believe with twins they don't make an exception with the whole 39 week thing. I will be 39 weeks 1 day (they only do Tuesday's & Thursday's) but I'm only having a single baby. But my dr has already said more than once, I won't make it to my date. Great- my planner personality loves that! lol
    Hang in there...

    My History:
    Lots of BFN's & failed IUI's w/clomid and/or femara
Finally BFP with femara & t.i.- son born 6/17/2010
Started TTC again around when DS was 3ish
    Lots of BFN's with femara & t.i & ovidrel
Tubes clear, S.A came back low motility but high count
About to switch to injectables w/femara, did one last cycle with just femara & an IUI with ovidrel- stupid motility was fantastic in the sample, but count was 700,000 AFTER wash! Had to sign a paper to even still do IUI- BFFP (big fat freaking positive) Go figure!

    1st Beta 13dpiui 54, 2nd beta 48 hours later 115, 3rd beta 48 hours later 310, 4th beta 72 hours later 1748.
  • 39w+ with twins?!?!  They are crazy......I can't believe they don't have different guidelines for twins.  Was it the nurse calling you that said this or the OB telling you during your visit?  My old boss' wife was often given wrong information by her nurses over the phone b/c they kept forgetting she had twins.

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
    IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
    Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
    Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)

  • @gsancho - the OB told me it would be 39 weeks. Nurse just scheduled for first surgery day in my 39th week. DD arrived on Easter so DH and I think maybe the twins will be here 4th of July - to preserve the holiday tradition and mess up the OB's BBQ. I would secretly enjoy that.

  • I'm exclusively seeing an MFM for this pregnancy and am scheduled for a RCS. Our first was born via an emergency c-section before 39w. When I was scheduled this time, it was made clear to me that they cannot schedule prior to 39w. So, that's what we did. That said, my doctor also made it clear that once I hit 37w, he would set a very low threshold for going early. He also said that with a valid medical reason, the date could be moved up, but until that time, the rule is no sooner than 39w. Frustrating? Yes. But I am not sure that the doctors have much latitude on this anymore. With the weekly (maybe twice weekly even) NSTs you will be getting in the third tri, they will be able to watch you closely for progress and contractions. My guess is that if the doctor sees any indication of labor, he will bring you in early. Are you contraindicated for going into labor?

  • Lurker. Also pregnant with twins here, my MFM and OB have always said they rarely allow their twin moms to go past 38 weeks. This is what I have read is the standard most places as well for twins. I would be pretty surprised if you even made it that far considering the size of your precious child at 38 weeks. I am assuming your twins are di di? Sorry you're frustrated, I would definitely ask about this again.
TTC #2 since 2011 (took 1.5 years to conceive spontaneously after multiple failed clomid cycles and 1 failed clomid +IUI)
    Me- PCOS, borderline hypothyroid
    Him- low concentration/count

    Feb 2014- started acupuncture
    Feb 2014- BFP
    March 2014- m/c @ 5 weeks
May 2014- HSG, all clear, started Synthroid, Femara 5mg CD 3-7 + trigger + TI= BFN
Waiting for new RE appointment end of July 2014

  • @AmCheri - I don't think there is specific concern about preterm labor as it seems (fingers crossed) that my placenta has moved up so previa is no longer a problem.  I have been on modified BR since around 20 weeks due to two rounds of bleeding related to the previa.  The doctor did tell me the same thing as far as 'if there is a problem / concern that the MFM points out, you could be scheduled right away'.  So packing the hospital bag is on my to-do-soon list.

@Mrs.Ess - the twins are di/di so OB said I am on the lower end of the 'high-risk' spectrum for twins - but yes, based on the size of DD I don't see any way imaginable I could make the scheduled c-section date.  Both babies are already measuring on the upper end of the weight range for their gestational weeks.  As I said on a prior post - I grow 'em big.  :-)

  • Sorry lawmom, I'm sure this is all the more frustrating when you're pregnant with twins. One of my friends who recently had twins was also not allowed to schedule until 39w. Doctor would not budge. As you said, packing your bag is the best thing you can do. Work on a contingency plan for your DD. Maybe have a short list of people who can be called on short notice. Good luck to you!
