2nd Trimester

Cautionary tale

So I'm 27 weeks prego and all the ladies I see during the day tell me my belly is small for how far along I am. Doctor says everything is fine so I'm not worried. But because my belly is "so small" I had been disregarding all the advice to keep off your right side or back when sleeping. (For anyone who doesn't know, it is supposed to keep your blood flow strong so it gets to your brain alright) so tonight I'm surfing the web and laying on my back and I start feeling very strange. My head starts to feel funny and it's slightly harder to breath. Once I rolled to my left side my vision started to get clearer (something I didn't even realize was being affected at the time) and my breaths became easier and my heads became clearer. Did not expect that! So I guess it's my left side from here on out ladies!

Im sure it's different for different women. Just wanted to post this in case anyone is in my shoes where they didn't believe it would make a difference sleeping on one side over the other!

My tummy is still small so I can sleep on my stomach for a short amount of time but when it's time to move I wake up. I alternate between my sides most the night. And baby girl lets me know if she doesn't like the way I'm laying. You're right it is different for everyone.
  • I agree with PPs. Your body let you know when it was time to move. It isn't some magical thing that when you are pregnant you all of a sudden need to sleep on your side for better blood flow. It is when your baby/uterus gets large enough to compress the important arteries in your back, you need to move so that they aren't compressed anymore. When this happens, your body lets you know by getting tingly, lightheaded, etc.. because blood flow is reduced. It sounds like you just got to that point. A couple weeks ago, it probably wasn't a big deal cause baby/uterus wasn't big enough yet. Some women get there sooner than others depending on physical structure of mom and baby, positions, etc...
  • The thing is, that was just your body letting you know that it was time to lay in a different position. It was fine up to that point.

Basically just listen to your body. I slept on my stomach and back until my body told me it was time to change positions. There are some people who can continue to lay anyway they want to up until they give birth. Others have to accommodate their bellies earlier in pregnancy. Don't scare people into sleeping a certain way if their way is still working for them.

    All of this!
  • Almost 36 weeks and still sleeping mostly on my back. I have osteoarthritis in both hips so side sleeping is usually excruciating for me. Sleep whatever way is most comfortable, your body knows when it's time to move :)
