headaches

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and over the last few weeks I've been getting very bad headaches behind my forehead. They're so bad that I come home from work and have to lie in bed for a few hours. Today I lay in bed, then went and threw up (I'm guessing cos of the headache).

Has anyone else been getting these? I haven't taken paracetamol for them yet. My doc wants to check my blood pressure tomorrow.

  • I started getting really bad tension headaches when I hit 11weeks. They were coming daily, and really knocked me out of commission. I can say that making a conscious effort to stay hydrated and never go hungry (eat every 2 hrs) as well as going to bed early has made a difference. The headaches will come due to hormones but staying hydrated, well rested and keeping your blood sugar even by not going hungry really helps keep them at bay. At least for me. Feel better!

  • I have been getting these too. Sometimes off and on, sometimes for days at a time. Tylenol never worked for me for headaches, and since I can't take ibuprofen or anything else, I guess I just have to deal. Didn't think there were any options, but I'll ask the doc next time I go if there's a prescription I can take. It is so frustrating and makes me really unproductive.
  • As soon as I hit week 13 they started coming almost every day. They totally knock me out. Tylenol doesn't even touch them. One day it was so bad, I took 1 Aleve and 1 Tylenol and that helped immensely. I know I shouldn't take it, but it really helped with the pain. My next appointment is next week and I'm asking the doctor if there is anything else I can do for them.

  • Thank you guys. It's a scary symptom..I've never been one to get headaches before. I never knew that they were a symptom in pregnancy. Do they ever go away..or will I have them for the rest of my pregnancy? :-S

  • I am 13 weeks tomorrow and I started getting headaches a few days ago. Today has been the absolute worst. The headaches are also making me nauseous. Just awful.

I suffer from severe migraines and they have gotten much worse since I got pregnant.  Nausea, sensitivity to lights and sounds are a few of the symptoms of a migraine. Since I can't take my usual migraine meds, my doc put me on a special medicine for it and it works pretty well.  If you don't like takings meds you can also try Peppermint essential oil on your temples.  That helps my minor headaches.

  • I'm so glad you brought this up. I'm 16 weeks and ever since maybe last week or so I've been getting bad headaches. I'm sure it's because of all of our hormones. I thought it might be because I'm drinking way less to none coffee so I had a cup when it was really bad the other day and it didn't really do much. It maybe helped a tiny bit. I drink a ton of water so I thought it can't be from dehydration. I forgot to ask the doctors office today about it. Darn. So like I said in guessing it's the hormones.
  • Whatever it is..when it arrives my day is over.. :( unable to move, I have to lie in bed. Last night it made me unable to eat and throw up. I hope it's just a passing phase!!

  • My doctor suggested I take magnesium and CoQ10 everyday with my prenatal vitamins. I've heard many say that taking those helped tremendously. I've had a migraine every day for two weeks now and they always come in the morning when I first wake. Hoping these new vitamins help!!
  • Get them all the time.  Told my doc yesterday she said Tylenol but I don't like taking stuff.  I've found that lavender essential oil behind the ears on the wrists and temples helps a lot as well as putting cold rags on your eyes and forehead.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try lavender or peppermint oil. I don't think it's dehydration because I'm drinking like a fish recently (water...obviously ;) )

I love that I can come on this forum and have any concerns sorted. :D

  • I'm a little over 16 weeks and have been getting them recently, too! Today's almost feels like a hangover headache-- and obviously without the booze! What the hell! Tylenol doesn't do too much to help...just sleep, and griping about it- haha!

    Ditto. It sucks.

  • I had migraines before pregnancy, but they really increased in frequency and severity once the second trimester hit. I actually went to the ER for a particularly insane migraine a few weeks ago when I was just at my wit's end. I discussed with my OB at my last appointment and she said it's very normal specifically at this stage and they typically subside around 18 weeks for most.

She suggested taking magnesium (400mg twice a day) and I also can take a prescription called Fioricet for very bad migraines. If you have migraines where you're throwing up, you may want to talk to your OB about these or other options. I know how awful and frustrating they can be.
  • I'm 15w 2d and Ive had a headache/migraine for the past 2 weeks. It started out as a slight headache in the morning. Id have half a cup of coffee and it would subside. But now nothing helps. I go to bed with one and I wake up with one. During the day it varies between slight headache, headache and full blown migraine. I try to stay as hydrated as possible but I'm a teacher so it's hard to go to the bathroom as often as needed. I also get super dizzy with them. Just yesterday I was sitting and the whole room was shaking. It doesn't help much that I have a challenging class in an urban district. I called my doctor today because I cannot take it any longer with being in so much pain and dealing with work. I know I won't get any help but I figure I'd try.
  • I am in the same boat. I've had to call of work multiple times cause I get migraines so bad I can't even get in the car and drive. I am desperate! I've tried Tylenol and caffeine but it doesn't help. I will try some of these tricks!
  • I also suggest magnesium supplements; I was getting headaches nearly every single day, but once I started taking daily magnesium, they've almost completely cleared up! Now all I have left to complain about is my horrible back pain...
  • Isn't magnesium in our prenatals? I wonder if we could get disability for constant migraines/dizziness? I pay into Prudential disability....wishful thinking

It's apparently in some, but it's not in mine.

I've had migraines since before pregnancy and now I get them if I don't drink caffeine. I cut down to one can a day and usually that helps tremendously. my doctor told me when I get them take 2 extra strength Tylenol and two glasses of soda. Hope this helps! Feel better mama!

I have always struggled with headaches but it is worse with this pregnancy. I learned that Excedrin Tension Headache is ok to take during pregnancy and it relieved my headaches. It works for me because of the amount of caffeine, so I don't take it everyday, just for the really bad ones, but I'm so relieved to find something pregnancy approved that works. If you're against meds, take a hot bath (not dangerously hot) but don't fill it too high, and put a cold rag around your neck. The hot water on your lower body causes the blood to rush down and away from your throbbing head. This can be done with just soaking your feet as well, but baths are relaxing :-)

I too get migraines and they've been bad throughout the pregnancy. Tylenol really doesn't help much but I take some and crawl into bed and put a heating pad on my feet and ice packs on my head and neck and try not to puke on myself.
  • Just saw my doctor yesterday about my constant headache/migraine with dizziness. He is sending me to a neurologist. Apparently there are some types of medications they can put you on that is deemed safe during pregnancy. Although I rather not take it only because what is safe today may not me tomorrow. I'll see what the neurologist says when I go (have yet to make appointment) and let you ladies know.
  • I get headaches too....I've narrowed it down to three causes. 1) stressful or unusually busy day the day before. 2) not enough sleep at night. Or 3) pushed myself a bit to hard...cleaning/working/working out...

I never get headaches if I have a good average day...I have a headache today (yesterday was awful) I have even taken a Tylenol and it's done nothing.

I also hear it's a symptom of the 2nd trimester.

I've had bad headaches too.. I went to the chiropractor and continue to go every week or two and it's helped sooo much!! I don't get them as much at all!! It feels nice to get your neck and back popped as well.. Especially since I personally have been sleeping in weird positions which make my neck and back hurt.. which probably contribute to the headaches a lot of the time.

UPDATE: since posting this I carry a massive bottle of water around with me, and try to eat every 2 hours.  I have only had one minor headache since this post :)

Oh, I also have a sweet tea in the afternoon...delish!

I recommend upping water intake...even if you don't feel thirsty - just drink!
