I'm not getting a baby monitor because we live in an apartment and it's so small that there's not really a need, but I've read articles about the ones with video getting hacked. Extremely small chance that this would actually happen to you, but for me, that would be enough reason to go with the old fashioned kind.

Here's the first article that came up when I googled it, it's not the exact one but I'd read before but it gets the point across:

  • I decided on the one without video. I just don't think it's necessary! But most of them have video these days.
  • We decided to not get a video monitor. We did get the AngelCare monitor that features and under-the-mattress movement sensor. It is supposed to sound an alarm if no movement is detected for X amount of minutes. I thought this was more important than watching him on the camera. I am a FTM though, so I have not used it yet and cannot attest to how well it does or does not work.
  • We got one with video but not wifi (so i believe this means it couldn't be hacked?).  SIL suggested that the video was less important off the bat, but once my nephew was old enough to thrash about and get his legs stuck in the crib slats, it was super helpful.  She could then look to see if he was fussing because he was stuck, or just generally fussing.  If he was generally fussing, she would give him a few minutes to try to self-calm before going in there.  If he was stuck, she would go in immediately and move him.

She still uses it now that he's 18 months, because if she goes into the room when he's fussing, and he sees her, it's game over - he's not going back to sleep.  So she likes to see the reason that he's crying before interfening.

  • We just put plain, old school audio monitors on our registry. We just didn't feel like we needed a video monitor.

  • I go with the video. Some people get obsessed with watching it. I didn't. It's helpful to see when they are just slightly fussy, stuck in an uncomfortable position, or wide awake and ready to be out of the crib. I love ours.

Also a friend who was insisting on not getting a video one ended up exchanging the "just audio" one after many "I just have to go check on her in case..." Moments. I am going with video again for this LO.
  • We went with the video. Not as critical in the infant stage but will be helpful once baby is more mobile (stuck in slats or trying to hop over the crib). Plus it's hilarious to watch them play and sing songs to themselves (which you can of course hear with a straight audio monitor but adding the visual component is really adorable). Allows you to check in on them without risking waking them up by going in needlessly.
  • we got the samsung safeview video monitor (The Baby Bargains book seemed to recommend this one highly). We've tested it on our puppy who sleeps downstairs and we love it so far!!
  • With!  One of the best purchases we made!  As pp said not so important in the infant stage (we didn't even purchase one until DD was 6 months old), but so helpful as they get older.  It's nice to be able to see if they have a leg stuck, if they are standing in the crib (clear sign of a poopy diaper in DS's case), etc.  Still use it with DD and she is 4 1/2, you can purchase extra cameras, with our model you can do up to 4 and set it to scan.
  • We went with the $100 ibaby from Target (other stores are $50 higher). It comes with an app so he can log in while at work and see baby sleeping or us playing. ;)

I didn't want a video monitor for my daughter, and got an audio one off the registry... My sister in law sent me their used video monitor that she no longer needed.

This is the best thing we own. I really thought it would be unnecessary, but it has allowed me to allow my daughter to work through mild crying on her own (now that she's a little older) because I can see that she is okay. I really feel like it has bought me a little extra sleep... Which I can definitely use these days ;)
  • Video. One that can not be hacked.
  • All moms I have asked said video... So we went with the video one.. I think it will give me a peace of mind

I also got the Oma+ movement sensor used on eBay for $40.... I am a natural worrier, so to spend a little more time to give me a piece of mind is well worth it
  • We went with video and the Angel Care monitor, as well. We had already purchased a video monitor we can watch from our phones when some friends gave us their angel care....

That's so cool! I think you just convinced me to get that.
  • We did a Foscam that uses wifi and an app on phone or iPhone to view the video feed. My husband works in IT and felt the wifi monitor was more secure than a radio frequency (normal) monitor.

Wow, I find that super creepy.
  • We have the Motorola with video for both. I value the video more than the sound. I can hear dd without a monitor but I can't see her. I know she is breathing without going in bc I can see her move or can tell that she changed positions. When she is fussing, I can tell if she is truly awake or just fussing. Mine has video but no wifi. I don't think it is totally hack proof but I assume it's safer. Also, I didn't want DH giving out the password (which he totally would) just to find out that his family has been watching me breastfeed.

  • We have a video monitor and I love it.  It's not connected to wifi so I believe we are safe from hacking.  I liked it when my daughter was little because I could click it on and watch her breathe (like a creep I know).  And now, we use it to bust her when she's trying to get out of her crib. We will use a video with our son as well.

I think I want one to see what my dog is doing all day.
It would be fun to see what the cats get up to when there's no people around at all. Although, I would suspect it's a lot of sleeping, based on the days that I am home all day. ;)

  • I got a video one, but its a bit older, black and white and bulky (soooo I'm pretty sure it can't get hacked lol). I actually bought it used on one of those local buy/sell pages on fb...I'm all for saving money!
  • We did the iCare monitor as well! I am starting my surgery residency June 22, and on nights or call shifts I will love being able to watch LO. I've been using it to watch my pups at home since I have been in the hospital.
  • @Frogger5 I find it very sweet that he cares enough to want to interact with us during his long work days. :)

Sure, but what about FaceTime instead? That's actually interactive and not just your husband tuning in to the old spy cam.
