Diaper Pails...a waste of money or a nursery must have?

Okay ladies, I'm hearing mixed reviews on whether or not I will need a diaper pail.  Most people are saying they are a waste of money and then the other argument is that the bags are expensive for the diaper genie brand.  I don't know what to think, it seems like a useful item.  For all of you STMs, what are your thoughts?

Re: Diaper Pails...a waste of money or a nursery must have?

  • Waste of money. I have a 2 story home and still found it to be useless. Bought one second hand and quickly discovered it was pointless. Just another place to hold stinky diapers for a few days to ferment. Easier to just throw them out side or in the main kitchen garbage. I have 3 kids, which includes a set of twins.

  • Total waste. The idea of having poop festering inside my home grosses me out. I used it once and hated it.
  • Yea. Poop diapers immediately went outside and pee diapers in the main trash that usually went out daily. Didn't ever feel the "omg wish I had a diaper genie" feeling.

We registered for the Genie. If we get it, great, if not, no worries!
  • Waste for me as well.

I hate the idea of having diaper sausages fermenting, so we opted for an Ubbi. It's steel so it's supposed to not absorb smells like plastic. And you can use regular kitchen trash bags in it.

  • Waste... stinky diapers get double wrapped in a shopping bag and go out to the trash, others go in the kitchen trash.

My diaper pail is in storage.. it would stink after a few days so it was pretty pointless. All the baking soda in the world didn't help. My sister in law had the diaper genie and it was pointless too. She's on baby #2 and doesn't use it either.

Put it in a plastic shopping bag, twist then fold it over on itself and tie.

  • Ubbi has great reviews!
  • Waste of $. We have a small open trash can, in the nursery. Pee diapers went in there and taken out at the end of the day.
  • We got one with first baby. I don't love or hate it. It's there. We take it out almost daily. We buy off brand bags and they fit. I think if you are gifted one... Yay! If not... You're not missing much.
  • Thanks everyone. That seems to be pretty unanimous. I guess I've got my answer.
  • I wrap sticky diapers in a wal mart bag tie it up throw it in the regular garbage pail and bam its just like the genie.
  • I have a DG and it worked great the first year now the poop diapers go In a dog bag down the stairs they smell to bad to keep in the DG. They come with air freshener now. I personally wouldn't throw a pee or poop diaper in a regular trash can. Especialy I'm the kitchen.
  • Also Costco sells the refils!
  • Waste for sure
  • Grosses me out, my sister had one and it stunk - we do the poop nappies bagged and straight in outside bin - wet nappies go in normal bin which goes out daily anyway
  • I registered for an Ubbi.. What? Are they not good?
  • Let me know because if it is no good I will take it off my registry
  • I never used a pail; like all the other ladies here, poopy diapers get wrapped (in scented dog poop bags) and run right outside.

  • Waste of money for me too. It's an unnecessary middle man. And I typically don't change my kids diaper in just the nursery. I actually hardly ever changed him in the nursery now that.i think about it.
  • Sounds pretty unanimous- I took it off the registry. It does sound pretty nasty now that I think of it
