Pitocin after birth

Today at my 37 week prenatal appointment, my midwife discussed with me the option of getting pitocin after labor to help the uterus contract and reduce the chances of hemorrhaging. I've never had the option before with my previous births and would like to know anyone else's experience with it. The pros and cons. TIA

    My hospital doesn't do it routinely, but if they did I wouldn't have a problem with it.  The evidence seems to be there to support its value and from what I've read it's easier to prevent a hemorrhage than to stop one once you start.  If you don't have an IV going I guess they can just do a shot in your thigh, baby is out at that point so it probably makes very little difference.  But as I said, my MWs don't do it routinely so I have no first hand experience with it.

    I have low hemoglobin and my midwife suggested this as the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage is decrease by 70%. They don't feel that I would do well if I lost a bunch of blood so this is what they call active management. I'm super ok with it. I'll need all the energy I can get once little one it born.

    They kept the pitocin on in the hospital after birth. I freaked out thinking they had forgotten but then explained why.

    They did it after my c/s. I think it help bring my milk in- an added bonus!

    I'm a red head and we have higher chances of hemorrhaging so I have alway been given pitocin after delivery. It helps to seal of the blood vessels where the placenta was attached.

    I asked my doctor about it yesterday and they only use it if it's needed, prevents hemorrhage but also hysterectomy if it got bad enough for that. I figure they don't use it unless necessary, but if they need to, then by all means!
    BFP #1 on 1/10/14. M/C on 3/3/14
    BFP #2 on 9/3/14. EDD 5/14/15

    I had two bags of it after this last delivery, they were trying to stop the bleeding, I recommend if you need it take it, this was my third full term and had a lot of complications after he was born.

    I had two bags of it after my delivery. I didn't even notice it. No side effects at all.

    I'm getting it. I think the only down fall is that it can make your uterine contractions after the fact more painful. Ie when your nursing and your uterus is shrinking back to normal. But I agreed to have it because I'd rather be safe than sorry.
