Tea meltdown

I'm a big coffee and tea drinker. I bought some decaf tea last week and just went to make some at work and saw on the label it says don't drink if pregnant. And I irrationally started tearing up bc I'm crazy and I feel bad I didn't see it before and....I just want some tea. Does anyone have tea suggestions that are ok for pregnant ladies?

Re: Tea meltdown

  • Most teas are ok when pregnant except maybe some specialty ones? I drink Earl Grey usually. That helped me with morning sickness last time.

Did the label say why not to drink your tea when pregnant?

  • Hmmmmm. What brand or type of tea is that? Just curious cause I drink lots of tea too

  • My favorite is lady grey. This one was an organic nighttime tea. It just says in bold: do not drink this if you're pregnant.
  • Some teas contain herbs that can stimulate the uterus. Uterus stimulating herbs are Lemon verbana, nettle leaf, rosehips, tarragon and all the sleep inducing herbs like Chamomile, Valerian and melatonin. My doc said get pure chamomile to relax and not to mix many relaxing herbs at once.
  • I just looked it up on their website. They talk about the caffeine content and that all pregnant women should consult with their doctor before taking it because there is some caffeine, even in the decaf.

However, it sounds like it's just a precaution they have to put on it to cover their bases. If you're okay with a slight bit of caffeine (because even decaf does have it) it "sounds" like it should be fine.

Here's the link - under the Lady Grey Tea Side Effects section.

Not sure if there are other brands but this is the one that came up for me.
  • Oh man I am trying to cut back on coffee and decided to have tea this morning, but instead of a stimulating tea I decided to have honey lavender chamomile. I've been struggling to stay awake since!
  • I am also a huge tea person, but I wasn't sure if is pregnant ladies are allowed to drink it since it has so much caffeine? A good alternative is hot water with a lemon wedge, it's super tasty! And it's also good if your trying to fight off an infection =]
  • I've heard peppermint is OK as is rooibos.
Heard to stay away from chamomile!
Yogi Tea has a delicious Mama To Be tea that's I've been drinking here and there. But my go-to morning beverage has been a chai rooibos latte.
  • I think tea has a low to moderate amount. It's not extreme.

  • I am a huge coffee/tea drinker and cut it out cold turkey. Did some ginger tea w honey for morning sickness. But I am jonesing so bad. I have a tea from the republic of teas called Get Maternal - thinking that's pretty safe. It says the ingredients are good to help ease the ligament stretching and help with the smooth muscle in the uterus!

I'm loving the "pregnancy tea". I totally forget the brand, but it's a pinkish box and they make tons of different teas, too.. Even a mother's milk one!
  • It's sort of like the pfb vanish I got for after wax care. I put it on last night feeling all proud I remembered and THEN read the bottle it says not to use in pregnancy. I overreacted a little dramatically and then spent some time looking it up online and realized that it wasn't recommended but there wasn't any evidence or research to support that topical sacylic acid was going to harm my blip. I won't use it anymore just because I'm paranoid, but I love my uptodate app

  • I thought chai/ rooibos was on the "no" list for teas? I love tea and am having a hard time finding ones that are universally deemed safe :(
  • This was a good article on this, I thought: https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy-health/herbal-tea/

I don't know if I ever thought about not drinking tea the first time around. I'm not that worried this time, either. I may drink one cup a day a few times a week.

  • Thanks for all the replies ladies! :)
  • @Citycolourful Rooibos is safe, regular chai is not.
At the Coffee Bean they have a "chai rooibos" which is a chai-flavored rooibos tea. Caffeine free.
  • As long as you're not mainlining it, plain black and green teas are ok. You don't want to exceed your caffeine limits, but a cup or two a day is safe.
  • I drink 2 cup of regular English breakfast per day or one real coffee, I think it's all about moderation and not stressing over every little thing. But, Would never drink alcohol while pregnant. Interestingly, my two miscarriages I was very strict, cut all caffeine, even chocolate. With my son, went full term and was more relaxed, drank tea coffee moderately, I think stressing is the worst thing you can do. xx
  • I've read to stay away from pregnancy teas until after the first trimester as many contain red raspberry or nettle and since you're still feathering the nest for the little one they can cause mc. But after that first trimester they say to drink an increasing amount of pregnancy tea every day to help strengthen your pelvic floor. I believe it was an american pregnancy article as well. Good luck!
  • You can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day. If you get pureleaf tea it only has 57mg and tastes amazing. It helps curb the lack of caffeine cause migraines too with just one bottle
