Baby shower question

Hi :)

My mom and I are wondering about something so I thought I would take it to the message boards!

I
live in CA and my whole family is in the northeast where I grew up. I
also have lots of friends and family friends there that I would love to
celebrate my baby shower with. The problem is, I can't plan on flying
during my third trimester when you would traditionally have a baby
shower. Flying is something I struggled with before pregnancy (and
medicated myself in order to do), so it's certainly not something I want
to put myself through at 7 months pregnant, IF my doctor would even
allow it.

My husband and I are going back east to celebrate my
father's 70th birthday in July when I'll be five months along (which is why I am posting in the 2nd trimester board). My mom
really wants to do something in NY for family and friends that are
there, but that would mean having a baby shower REALLY early, and we
aren't sure if that is right. I know, who decides what's right but us?

I just wanted to get opinions from other moms to be about how they would feel having a baby shower this early.

    I think it is a great idea! There's no set time a shower has to take place and this sounds like the most convenient for you and your guests.

    Have your shower whenever you want! I already discussed with my coworkers about doing it early (June-ish) since I'm having twins and could go out early or be off work prior to birth, etc.

    Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable having the showing before the anatomy scan. Five months along ... how many weeks will you be? 

    Also, FYI, barring complications, you can fly up to something like 36 weeks.

    Four months is really early for a baby shower, but when it comes to MTB traveling cross-country, I probably wouldn't side-eye it.

    As long as you don't mind that you might not know the sex at that time, I think it's fine. I wouldn't want to fly at 7 months even if my doctor allowed it! There is no set time frame to have a shower.

    I think you should take advantage to celebrate such a joyous occasion with your friends and family....its difficult to coordinate things and times for everyone when you live cross country. People will understand and I am sure they will just be glad to see you and your growing bump ;-)

    I'd say take advantage of being back home and plan one when you go. My parents are hosting one in a month for me and I'll be 25 weeks.

    I wouldn't side-eye it, given your situation, but I personally would be extremely nervous about having a shower before my anatomy scan. Fingers crossed that this doesn't happen to you, but I think it would be devastating to have your shower and celebrate with everyone and then find out something was wrong at your anatomy scan. (One of my friends found out that her baby would probably not survive to term at hers, and she said that the hardest thing she ever had to do was to tell everyone that the baby wasn't going to make it...he was stillborn at 23 weeks.) Is there a way that you can schedule your anatomy scan to be before your trip, so that you know you're all in the clear?

    I'm not trying to be overly negative, so please don't take it that way. I've just watched someone have to deal with a terrible situation and I don't want you to have to do that, too!
