Opinions needed

We lost our previous pregnancy at 16 weeks and it was a boy. We decided to "name" him Joseph as it has always been our favorite name for a boy. Now we are expecting another boy and my husband wants to name him Joseph Michael. I LOVE the name but I dont know how I feel about using the same name. What are your thoughts on this? Would you go ahead and use the name or save it because it belonged to the other baby?

  • i think that you could switch the names, name your child Michael Joseph, and when he asks where his middle name comes from say his older brother.

    This is a great idea!
  • I think @JessHeppell has a great idea. I've been mulling over this situation in my head and I honestly can't decide which way I fall here. On the one hand, I don't see a problem with using the name (sorry to those who may see this as insensitive) but on the other hand I'm not sure if that would make me feel like I was being disrespectful, 'forgetting' and not honoring the previous loss. You may feel that you *are* honoring the previous loss by using the name, so... Tough to say.

I wouldn't think less of you if you did end up using Joseph, tho.

This is something my husband suggested but the name Michael is too common in my family. I only agreed to use it as a middle name because my husband loves it. Also, I've thought about maybe using Joseph as a middle name but I can't come up with first names that go well with it or that I really like.

If you really like the middle name idea, the two names we were considering if we were going to have a boy were Ryan Joseph or Andrew Joseph. We're having a girl so we dropped both of those after our anatomy scan, but they're ideas if you're interested!

Thank you! We already have an Andrew but I like Ryan. Congrats on your baby girl!

Thanks! Good luck thinking of a name for LO, I'm sure that whatever you come up with will be perfect for him! :)

  • I agree with the PP I wouldn't use the name then if you already have previously "named" your other child that. Even if he isn't with you today. I think for grieving and things like that I would just leave that name to be that child's. Don't make your new baby boy feel like he has to live up to that name. I love the idea of using It as a middle name though. Just try to come up with name ideas and go from there. There's no rush yet you still have time!
