Today was first US. I'm so nervous

hello everybody,

So today I went to my RE's Office for my first ultrasound. I was surprised to learn that we are measuring five weeks and five days. I was almost positive that today was six weeks. The doctor did not seem pessimistic, but he did not seem optimistic either.

There was a visible yolk sack but no fetal pole. If I am 5/5 that should be okay and it could be developing within the next couple of days. The doctor said to come back in 10 days for a repeat and he would be very worried if we don't see a heartbeat then.

I guess my main fear is that even though I was tempting and using OPK's, my timing is so off. DH and I did our first cycle of IVF in February and ended up losing the pregnancy at just over four weeks on March 2nd. To complicate the situation, I had a severe case of the flu which I believe pushed off my ovulation. We conceived naturally this cycle.

Still, I'm nervous. Has anybody else had just a yolk sack at 5/5 and proceeded forward to get a heartbeat?

Thank you all so much for your input!

  • @Knottie1427773476 I can't say for the heartbeat yet but I only had gest sac and yolk sac yesterday at 6+4! My doctor wasn't concerned at all and invited me back to see the heartbeat next week :) does that ease your concerns any? Xx

  • @chilton1286 YES! Thank you so much! Obviously I know that there is no way to know, and my doctor's probably just being cautious because my timing is so off and of course because of last cycle's m/c.

That is so exciting that you will be back in a week and hopefully that heart will be beating beautifully strong! Please keep me updated?
  • @Knottie1427773476 of course! I'm so fortunate that my employer has their own medical team so I've had two scans now and another next week! I love it and have all of my scan photos. It's amazing to see the growth... Of a sac lol!

Of course we are all a little cautious and I'm especially sorry that you've had a previous m/c but it sounds like things are moving along nicely for both of us. Feels crazy, right? This is my first so totally overwhelmed but incredibly excited! Xx
  • @chilton1286 that most definitely is wonderful that your employer has no problem with you doing so many ultrasounds. Do you work in a hospital? My husband is in medicine as well and we are very fortunate to have excellent insurance. That being said, he had to leave me after the U/S to get back to his office and I feel that it had he been with me to meet with the doctor, perhaps my Minerva's wouldn't be as frayed. Hopefully he will get to come with me for the next one!

It is exciting! There's no getting around it! That's part of why I think I'm so nervous, because I'm not cautious in my heart at all. This is an exciting time for both of us.

Thank you so much for your kindness!
  • I work in oil and gas but the company decided to provide their own medical team rather than have insurance services. I'm in the Middle East so a bit different from USA! As its so conservative here my husband hasn't been allowed in to see any of the scans to date which is why I'm so glad that I have these sweet scan photos to show him although it was sad to tell him that we still didn't have a fetal pole or heartbeat. I'm looking forward to telling him when we do!

Lovely words, and so good to talk to someone in the same situation! X
  • well you are technical IN your 6th week. 5 weeks means you have complete 5 full weeks and your 5 days into your 6th week. I wouldn't worry to much yet your pretty early still. I saw a tiny heart and heart it clear at 6w 2d.
  • @chilton1286 Wow! I have a lot of friends that are from the Middle East… I used to live in Spain so there are a lot of people from the Middle East (I lived in the south.) I also went to school with a lot of people that either are Middle Eastern or live in Dubai/Saudi for work. I guess it's lucky that you have your own medical care instead of Bupa :-) i'm so glad that you got to show your husband those scans. Will he be able to come in with you when it is just scanning your belly? I hope so! How long have you been there?
  • @theawc42 Thank you! I'm definitely trying to hold onto the hope that we will get a nice heartbeat when we go back for a second scan. I know it's early, I'm just surprised at how early it is. I was pretty sure that I was six weeks and the fertility friend application thinks I am almost 7.

I'm so glad for you that you heard a nice heartbeat! How lovely!
  • @Knottie1427773476 I'm hoping so as would love to share it with him! So long as he can be there when I'm in the labour suite we're both happy but would be nice for him to feel involved now I think! We've been here for three years, this is my parents first grandchild so I think my mom is going to be so happy but demand that we move home, so our stay may be short lived ;-) stay in touch, looking forward to hearing more of your journey!
  • I was 6w2d and only saw the gestational sac.  Went back 4 days later and saw a baby and heartbeat.  You are still so early.  You would think the RE would know this.  Things can change in a matter of days this early on.

And you are only off by two days.  You could have ovulated a bit later or implanted a day or two later than normal.  That is not unusual to find this early in pregnancy.

Breath and relax and enjoy your time being pregnant!

  • @chilton1286 I can't say I blame her! It is so hard when you have your family very far away. I'm so glad that your husband will be able to be there in the suite with you. Have a great night!
  • @SunnyD2015 thank you very much :-) I can't tell if he wasn't being optimistic or if he was just being cautious. He's a very nice man and I feel that he is an extremely competent doctor. He seems quite confident that we will end up with a baby eventually. He said this prior to this pregnancy. I think the situation is complicated because unfortunately I lost my father in December, then we had the miscarriage last cycle and now my mother has cancer again. Perhaps he just doesn't want to get my hopes up in case if it doesn't go my way.

Unfortunately my husband had to leave before we got to see the doctor because he had to get back to work so I was by myself. Which is fine, but probably not a good idea when you're nervous for an appointment. Lol!

I'm hoping he will be able to come with me next time.

What is your due date? It's so exciting that you got a beautiful heartbeat! That's thrilling:-)
  • Same like me! I went In for repeat and heard it today
  • That's common, with my second pregnancy my first ultrasound was just a yolk and sac ..... I had to wait 3 weeks to see progress, and well I have a 4.5 year old boy running around. ;)
  • Thank you all so much! I'm feeling much better. Ah
  • My due date got changed to the 10th.  I just turned 7 weeks.

Sometimes doctors don't always have the best bedside manner.  But with an RE, you would think he sees enough people this early on to know the norms of early pregnancy.

Hope things turn out better for you at your next appointment.  I go back on Thursday for another check.  I have placenta previa already so I will probably get a scan every couple of weeks for a while.

    Good luck!

  • @sunnyD2015 Good luck with your skin! Please definitely keep me updated? I go back in for a repeat scan on Monday the fourth which will hopefully show a heartbeat :-) definitely keep in touch sweetheart!
  • I had just the embryonic sac and yolk sac at 5 weeks and 5 days, and at 7 weeks and 1 day I had a healthy little dude(ette) with a heartbeat of 134. :)  I wouldn't worry too much.

  • @SilverRayn Congratulations!!! Hoping that you have an H&H 9 months! And thank you!
  • My first ultrasound with this little bean was at 5w5d and we only saw a yolk sac and gestational sac, went back in a week later and there was a baby and a sweet little fluttering heart. Don't lose hope!! I believe you will be fine!!!
  • @bvaughn113 Thank you! I have seen you on the boards, and you always have really nice things to add. I appreciate your support! What is your due date?
  • I am due 11/03/15 according to my LMP but according to U/S 11/07/15 lol I dunno which to believe but I'm sure it will be somewhere between that time frame. I see a lot of worry going on as far as MC on this board and I am still in those shoes myself as I have had one I just like to try and think positive! :) will really be looking out for updates from you!

U/s was today. Sac measured 7 weeks but no baby. I'm losing hope by the min. Ultrasound tech/ nurse says her guts tells her it's a blighted ovum. Meaning the baby never formed. I'm so lost and unsure. I'm not ready to give up on my baby yet. Prayers needed.
  • @babyiheke I am so sorry for what you're going through! Will be sending tons of prayers your way!
  • @Knottie1427773476 just dropping by to say I had my 7+3 scan today and the fetal pole was there with a healthy little heartbeat! Wishing you the same for your upcoming scan, everything will be fine! Let me know, Clare x
  • I am 5 weeks 3 days and they still could not see a gestation sac yet at all.. He was not concerned and my blood work was fine.
