This is like reading my own journey.

I had three consecutive appointments with high reads (with the second time landing me in L&d for monitoring). Everything checks out and I have zero symptoms of pre-e. I know it is anxiety causing my high reads, or what some like to call "white coat syndrome." After discussing in length with my OB and specialist, I have been diagnosed with gestational hypertension (also called Pregnancy Induced hypertension). No special restrictions for me except to "take it easy" and now weekly appointments and NSTs to see if it improves. As of now we will be induced at 37 (which I'm not thrilled about) so I hope to chill out and get better reads. I have heard to ask them to only take manual BP reads (no machine) and to let you lay in the room in the dark for a few minutes to relax and breathe. That's what I'm planning from now on. Can't hurt.

I understand their need to be proactive as high reads are a sign of the possibility of developing pre-e and they want to prevent any unnecessary complications. My specialist says that high BP can affect growth of the baby and/or fluid levels, in addition to your health & organs (kidney) etc. My doctor doesn't do meds for this but I know I've read a few other J15 ladies have been put on meds for their BP. Try not to stress out (fellow anxious mama over here so I know it's hard!) and relax as much as possible.

I'm with you on this journey if you need to talk :)

  • My mother has a history of having high blood pressure, her doctor suggested she take her BP when she wanders into a drug store. They all have the free BP machines by the pharmacy and no white coats. She found that her BP was much lower on these and would record it and then bring it in with her when she saw her MD. You could start trying this, obviously try to stay calm and don't get anxious as you sit down. My mom even bought her own so she could check it at home where she is most relaxed.

Good luck, I hope you are able to reduce your anxiety and get some good results.
  • I check mine at home and it's always normal. I explained and showed readings to my doctors. They didn't really care, but agreed to watch it for improvements.
  • Watch your sodium intake....too much salt can increase your blood pressure. I have high blood pressure and take medication for it.
  • I had high blood pressure 140/90 on my last visit almost 32 weeks. Up until 32 weeks it has been normal like 120/80 or a little lower. I was sent for blood work and had to complete the 24 hour urine test today. I took my blood pressure at home today and it was 130/85. No protein in my urine so far. Hoping to get results tomorrow or Friday.
  • I have had high blood pressure issues since 27 weeks. At around 27 weeks I had a horrible headache and my face felt swollen. So I went to the pharmacy for a blood pressure check. It was 167/95. So I called my doctor, and then they had me come in. At the doctor's office after sitting for several minutes it was 135 over 80 something. So he said I was fine and sent me home. And told me I didn't need to come back for one month. Fast forward 3 weeks later and I had another severe headache, and had gained 5 lbs in 5 days. So I again stopped by the pharmacy and this time had the pharmacists take my pressure. The first time it was 156 over something. I sat completely still for 10 minutes and it went down to 135 over something. So I called the doctor's office. Again they requested I come in. So at 3:30 I went into the doctors. When I got to the doctor's office and sat before they took my blood pressure, the blood pressure was 138/80 something. The doctor came in and proceeded spend the next 30 minutes trying to convince me I had an anxiety disorder and that I was in denial about it. He told me that I was intelligent at crafting extra OB visits (I've passed 3 kidney stones, 2 in the hospital in the last 2 1/2 months). When I asked him which OB or L&D visit was inappropriate he couldn't pinpoint one. Needless to say, I left there feeling like my concerns were unheard (as I explained that what I was noticing was that when I was up and moving around my blood pressure would skyrocket). Fast forward exactly 6 hours later and I was laying in bed and started bleeding ruptured my water and passed a huge (as the ambulance driver described it at the hospital) mandarin size clot. I was ambulanced to the hospital where my asshole doctor met me and prepped me for an early delivery and transfer by ambulance to a hospital with a neonatal unit. The asshole doctor actually said to me, "now this doesn't have anything to do with our visit earlier today." After transfering hospitals I have seen several high risk OB's and MFM Docs and when I first arrived the watched and blood tested every 6 hours for preeclampsia as the docs told me that PRROM can occur for any reason, but when there is a clot with it, that indicates preeclampsia or high blood pressure. They monitored every 6 hours for preeclampsia but while my blood pressures were running higher no lab tests were abnormal. They have since diagnosed me with Pregnancy Induced Hypertension. After they did orthostatic blood pressures the other day (Laying, sitting, standing) it was clear as soon as I sat up my blood pressure skyrocketed into the 150's. Which is what I had been trying to explain to my regular ob! So they started me on a low dose blood pressure medicine and I feel AMAZINGLY better. So if they tell you bed rest listen, so what happened to me doesn't happen to you. I am hospitalized until 34 weeks as a result of my high blood pressure causing PRRom. So listen to your doctor and don't be afraid to ask for them to do blood pressures laying, sitting, and standing to determine what is really happening.
  • I have PIH that hopped up a couple of weeks ago, no other signs of pre-e, though. They ran an extra test on the urine sample last week and have run the blood tests twice, so far so good. I did have an overnight stint in L&D and ante-natal, and with medication my bp has come down. I've been threatened with bed rest and been pulled from the gym. I have lovingly referred to it as "modified" bed rest because I can still come to work, but basically I'm supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible, especially when home. I would imagine that as long as you're still not presenting with any indicators of pre-e, they may put you on a low dose of bp meds for the rest of your pregnancy. And maybe give you the steroid shots for the baby's lungs, they gave them to me while I was hospitalized last week as a precautionary measure.
