Clogged ears

I posted this earlier on the daily symptoms board but no one has responded and I'm ready to kill someone. Both my ears are blocked, one is completely blocked and I can't hear anything- it's driving me insane. I've read this does happen to pregnant ladies due to fluid building up behind your eardrum. Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions for relief? My head and nasal cavity also feel quite swollen but my ears have been blocked for about a week and a half :( it's making me sad

Re: Clogged ears

  • Go to urgent care and ask them to flush your ears... Completely painless and the result is amazing...I have had to do this in the past and it provided so much relief... Good luck!

  • You need a Neti-pot to help clear your sinuses!

  • Yes! Me too! My chiropractor did ear adjustment and I feel great now. Good luck!
  • The oak pollen started falling here. Welcome to my spring time hell. Nothing from the neck up will be right with me until I can get back on my allegra and nasal spray. My ears constantly snap crackle and pop from fluid.

  • Wow this sounds absolutely terribly miserable. I have not had this problem, other than when I go swimming and water gets stuck in there, but that's not the same. I just wanted to wish you well in resolving this, cause it sure as shiz sucks when I have water trapped in one side from swimming.

  • I've had this practically every single day at around the same time and they told me there's nothing they can give me.....it will go at delivery :(
  • This happened to me after flying with a cold while prego. Went to dr and ear drums were not ruptured. So she said to use Afrin as directed and pseudofed.

After about 3 days it cleared up. In more severe cases (which I've had) there is a steroid nasal spray by prescription. They hesitate to give pregos this, but she gave it to me after my obgyn said risks were low. I didn't end up using it.

    Good luck!
  • How do they clear your ears at urgent care??

Is it like the ear candling wax process?? So intrigued by this...
  • I suggest putting ear drops in at night for about three or four nights so soften any built up wax. Then see your GP to syringe them - they basically flush your ears with warm water and any wax will come out. Painless and safe and everything will suddenly sound so loud!

They flush them with water and it gets all the wax out... It's actually pretty amazing what can be trapped in there!
  • Go see an audiologist! I clean ears with curettes and only flush when I absolutely have to. It's more sanitary and much more comfortable to use the curettes. A lot of my patients who come in for cerumen removal are so thankful they didn't have to go through the pain of getting them flushed!

Also, if it is middle ear fluid and not cerumen, they will be able to do testing to determine that. It's an easy, quick test.
  • Thanks guys, the thing is- it's not wax, I've been to my doctor today bc I couldn't stand it. He said its fluid behind my ear drum and it will go away after the babies, he said think of it as swelling/ water retention which happens in pregnancy. I was really hoping it was wax so I could have it flushed and feel some relief, it doesn't hurt but it's so annoying. I am going to try a netti pot bc I think they are cool.
  • I've had the same problem throughout most of my pregnancy, and it is the worst! If I plug my nose and breathe in, it sometimes goes away, but usually just for a minute or two until it comes back. It's the worst during the day when I'm at work or out and about.
My doctor told me to use Nasacort, a steroid nasal spray that you take every 24 hours. I've been using it for a week, and it seems to be helping- but I have been cleaning out my sinuses with a netipot before using the spray, so it's hard to say what s actually solving the problem. Also, when I spray the Nasacort, I immediately plug my nose and breathe in and out a few times to get the steroid into my eustacian tube. Good luck!
  • Exactly the same! Wish it was wax! But it's fluid....one ear clogs at around 1pm and the next by about 1:30-2:00 each day. Goes on its own every evening around 8! It is super annoying!

    uuuugggghhhhh, sucks, sorry!!
  • I am sorry you are going through this and i feel your frustration as i have had dizziness since february and ENT/audiologist told me bc we have more fluid build up while pregnant that it can move and thats what happened to me. I did an inverted yoga position and must have displaced liquid into my head / ear area so until i deliver and lose extra water retention its a constant symptom! Doctor just told me really all i can do is drinks tons of water and stay away from salty foods so maybe this could help as well for u! I hope you and the others start to feel better once baby arrives! 9 more weeks for me eekk hope it goes fast!
  • I have always had problems with my eustacian tubes having fluid when I have sinus issues. My go-to remedy: Zyrtec + Regular mucinex + Flonase + neti pot helps a lot. All have been giving the green light for use by my ob and my pcp for use during pregnancy.
  • I'm going through this too - just started yesterday, I was hoping it would go away today but no luck. Will be asking my doctor to check it out at my appointment tomorrow on the off chance that it's wax instead of fluid.
