Totally bummed about no dilation!

i had my 36 week check up today and was checked and told I'm not dilated. I'm so bummed! I've had tons of contractions, lost my mucus plug/bloody show, and she's dropped. I did even ask about effacement or how soft my cervix was cause I was so disappointed about the dilation. I know I still have 4 weeks till EDD but I went to 41w3d with my last and that fills me with anxiety! I've got EPO and red raspberry leaf tea that I've already recently started but what else should I do?

Re: Totally bummed about no dilation!

  • I have had zero signs of labor and I'm 36 weeks. So, at least you have something happening. :) I'm not dilated either. My cervix is softening apparently. That's all I've got so far.

  • This is true. So with my last I refused an induction at 40 weeks and my water broke at 41w2d and I delivered the next day. I thought I was doing everything right and my body was working. Well she was in so long she had a bowel movement in the womb and swallowed it and set up infection. So she had a week long visit in the NICU. Not an experience I want to relive!
  • I'm 37 week and 4 days and I'm not displayed either and I've also been having contractions. It's normal not to be dialated yet. As far as what happened before that's why doctors induce you shortly after 40 weeks. That is highly unlikely to happen before the 40 week mark. Doctors don't like to induce labor so anytime a doctor suggest something like that I would go with it. They know what they are talking about.
  • I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and still nothing. I cried!!! It doesn't help that my husband is gone until Sunday and I'm all alone. I'm just really over it too. They said they will still induce me the same day, just give me cervidil if nothing by next week.
  • When are you scheduled to be induced?
  • I am 38w 4d and nothing. No contractions, no mucus plug, no thinning or dilation.
  • I'm getting checked tomorrow.. I'm 37 weeks... I'm nervous...
  • I am getting induced next week at 39 weeks. My first child was huge and this one seems to be no exception. I also have mild preclampsia which might all be reasons my Dr decided to induce me.
  • I'm also being induced next week at 39w+. BP has been a tad high all along and since she's full term, they suggested inducing. I am now obsessing over the cervidil and pitocin stories on here... Hoping for a positive experience and a vaginal delivery, but fully aware that it's not up to me entirely. Good luck to everyone in these last few weeks!!
  • I pray for easy inductions for you ladies! :)
  • I'd be hugely disappointed too! And my first came at 39 weeks! I can't imagine going all the way 41 plus. That's so tough. With my first, I was dilated to a 1 from 36-39. Then my water broke. This time around, at 36 I was a 1 and at 38 I was a 2. I'm 38w4d today.

But can I offer the tiniest consolation? With my first, I was in labor trying to go natural. I got to 5cm. After 2 hours of laboring there, I got checked again and THEN I WAS 3 CM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  How the hell did I get smaller by 2?????????

Apparently, it's possible. When your body isn't relaxed and you're fighting the contractions (as I was), you can go backward. I almost threw a water bottle at my doctors face. I was INFURIATED. No one had told me that. After that, got the epidural and three hours later - baby was here. But still. So frustrating. So now when they tell me how dilated I am, I get really disgruntled and mumble rude comments about "yeah, but how much smaller will I be tomorrow??" because I'm a bitter and impatient prego.

Anyways- I'd say that by 39 weeks if you're still not dilated- maybe look into more sex (the semen will soften cervix so at the very least make dilation happen more quickly when it is time) and talk to your doc about membrane stripping. And while I'm also anxious to get labor going, I'll admit that it is definiitely better for baby to be inside. I try to tell myself this is part of motherhood- being selfless and being patient. But I'm not good at taking my own advice, and so I'm not best for advice giving here. But I wanted to offer that you're not alone in feeling disappointed about no dilation. Especially after your first experience!
  • I went in to the hospital last night because I was having regular contractions every 3 minutes lasting for a minute. I've had 2 uterine surgeries so I didn't want to sit around at home if I was in labor.... Well I'm closed, high, and thick. I was just dehydrated. I feel like an idiot & so bummed that nothing is happening.
  • It doesn't mean anything, i was 34 weeks when i was 2 cm dilated, at 38+4 i'm 4 cm and nothing :) you could go before me lol
  • For the record I'm not trying to have my baby at 36 weeks. Thank you to the mothers that understand the frustration and and 9th month miserableness. I will try things to help my body along not jolt it into labor.

I've been having contractions every 2-7 minutes for over 12 hours and the hospital sent me home because I'm only 1cm dilated. Dilation greatly needed among us! Baby is low and everything is soft, but I'm only 37 weeks so they gae me a water IV and told me to come back when the contractions had me gasping for air.
  • I'm 38 weeks today. At my 37 week check upI was ononly 1cm now I'm only 1 1/2cm I had my daughter at 37 weeks and this boy isalready big! He was measuring iover 6lbs 2 weeks ago!
  • How come no one warns you how painful the cervical check is? My ass came right off the table, and when I got up the paper under me was mangled. All that and no dilation, and baby is so far up doc is talking about a csection after next weeks appt.
  • I am 38w 4d and nothing. No contractions, no mucus plug, no thinning or dilation.

Heard that girl! Same for me at 38w 3d Freaking sucks!! :(
  • We do need some dilation! I completely understand it doesn't mean much but it sure would relieve a little anxiety! So sorry about the mention of a c-section! Prayers your body cooperates soon!! Everyone else's too! :)
  • The same thing happened to me at 36 weeks.

Yes I go back Monday for 39 week check up ... will see!
  • Had my checkup today, 38 weeks, 2cm dilated, & dr said babies head is down low and in a good position. Even with all that news I'm not getting my hopes up. I could still be weeks out from delivery.
  • With my first, I was told 5 days before his due date that I hadn't dilated and he would be late. He came that night.
  • I was only a finger tip dilated 2 days before DD came.  She was 2 days early.  Doesn't mean anything.  4 weeks out I wouldn't worry either, better not to be than to be worried about preterm labor.  Although I really want to know I'm taking the advice of my BFF and not getting checked at appointments right now because it is disappointing.  I've had tons of cramping but nothing more.  I did with DD too but it didn't seem to be showing in dilation.  If he isn't here by my 39 week appointment I might asked to get checked and maybe membrane sweep, did that with DD.
