Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

What did you ask at the follow-up appointment?

I have an appointment tomorrow to make sure everything passed after using cytotec last week. I have a few questions for my doctor, but I'm wondering if I'm missing any important ones. Here's what I have:

What could have caused the MC? (I'm fully aware that I may never have an answer to that, but want to ask anyway)

When should I expect my period to come back (give or take, obviously she won't know exactly)

When can we TTC again (I think they can decide this based on the thickness of your uterine lining on the ultrasound, but not sure. I know if it's too thin you risk another MC)

Am I now at a higher risk for the next pregnancy? Will we need to monitor that one differently?

My doctor mentioned that in the spring time there are a lot of viruses going around that can cause MC even though the mother doesn't get sick (baby's immune system isn't in full force I guess). So when are there not so many viruses? Lol

Anything else I should be asking?

Re: What did you ask at the follow-up appointment?

  • My doctor wanted to put me on a specific vitamin supplement in addition to my prenatal. If you're taking any medications/vitamins, I'd check on that too. :)
  • I think that is a great list, it is almost identical to the list I brought to my follow up.

My doctor put me on baby aspirin starting now, and called in a script for progesterone for me to activate when I get a positive test result.  Her reasoning was that you can't have too much progesterone during a pregnancy, but you can have too little so it is just a precaution.

  • My doctor had answered most of those questions before my d&e, so yesterday I just asked him what we need to do now that we know I'm Rh-negative, and why I bled so much after the d&e. I should have asked how soon and how often he'll have me come in for the next pregnancy. But I'll call when I get a BFP and find out then. He may just treat it like any other pregnancy. He said having one miscarriage doesn't make you more likely to have another one. But he may also let me come in sooner for my peace of mind.

  • Carrie's comment reminded me, that my doctor and nurses are very willing to have me come in to find the heartbeat for me whenever I want, on the next pregnancy.  The nurse told me that I'm going to be worried and that is fine, I can sit there and call 10 times a day if it makes me feel better next time around.  It made me feel like they really cared about how I was doing.
