Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage taking forever

Baby stopped growing around 5 weeks 5 days-6 weeks. I am 9 weeks 2 days and still waiting to naturally miscarry. I have spotting going on and cramping, but nothing major yet. Saw the dr again today and they said I can wait 2 more weeks to see if it happens. They wanted me to take cyotec as a first option versus d and c. They said it is safer and less risk then d and c for scaring the uterus etc. Everything I read about both options scares the crap out of me. I just want this to hurry up and happen naturally asap. I have no idea what to do. This sucks and I am so sorry for all your losses as well. Hang in there ladies!

Re: Miscarriage taking forever

  • I am so sorry for your loss and for your having to choose.
With my most recent loss, I had a missed mc at 8 weeks and opted for the d&c with the hopes that I would have the option of having a DNA report. (Unfortunately my Dr. did not honor my request.)
I don't regret having the d&c, it has been easier phsycially on me, however I can completely understand the desire to miscarry naturally.

  • My baby also stopped growing about that time, I didn't naturally miscarry until week 10.  My doctor wouldn't offer an D&C or medications to push it along until I was at least 12/13 weeks.  Hang in there, hopefully it will also happen naturally for you as well.  Mine started with about 3 days of spotting and then the miscarry began to take full swing.

I'm 13 weeks, and my baby stopped growing (or at least has only gained maybe a 1/8" in size since week 6). I took the meds today and have just started bleeding.

I agree that both options can be scary. My doctor gave me the choice of the meds or the d&c, and I chose the meds because I could start the process sooner (they only do elective d&cs....which, for some reason, my d&c would be considered elective?? I guess because it isn't an emergency right at this minute. Anyway, they only do them on one day late in the week and the idea of going through another week of this was too much).

So far, so good with the medication. Of course, the process is only just starting, so I don't know how I will feel a few hours from now.  I was told to take it as a suppository. I don't know if that is how other people take it. That seems to have helped with the nausea etc., though.

I was fearful of the pain, but mainly I've been fearful of infection. BUT, the doc gave me some basic guidelines and I'll be back in the u/s room in 10 days to see if everything was passed. For whatever reason, that has comforted me.

I'm really sorry for your loss. The waiting sucks. Please post questions about your options. It's important that you feel comfortable.
  • I took Cytotec on Wednesday after the ultrasound showed no heartbeat and that the baby had stopped growing. My doc gave me the option between that and a d&c. I started bleeding lightly 6 hours after taking the meds vaginally. Most of the bleeding actually happened while I slept. I passed clots when I woke up at 4:45am. Then took another dose of Cytotec and passed the sac about 5 hours later. Physically speaking, I was expecting worse. I'm glad I took the meds to get this over with sooner. Good luck with your decision.

  • Thank you all for your support.  I started bleeding a little bit more today, like a period now. So hopefully things are getting going. Crossing my fingers this is done soon so I can heal, have closure, and move on.
  • My bleeding stopped again. Ugh, will this ever end? : (
  • I feel for you and am going through something very similar. I've been having a light period for the last two weeks and thought I was finally miscarrying naturally. Nothing is progressing. I'm running out of time. I finally took a dose of cytotec on Sunday and nothing happened. Took another round on Monday and still nothing. The waiting around is driving me crazy. Now I'm looking at doing a d&c. This feeling of being in limbo is so stressful isn't it?
  • I am so sorry @jeanlee123 It is so frustrating I know! I don't understand why are bodies are not getting a clue and progressing! I am running out of time as well.  Did you take the cytotec orally or vag? I hope you don't need to have a d and c, if that's not what you want.  I am really hoping for both of this to end soon. I really did not want to use cytotec or d and c but if nothing happens soon the dr is really pushing me because of risk of infection.
  • I feel the same as you. Both doses of cytotec were 800mcg doses administered vaginally. I had to take time off work this week for the cytotec and since I was able to find a good sub for the whole week (I'm a teacher) I bit the bullet and scheduled a d&c for tomorrow morning. I'm so frustrated and drained emotionally that I am finally at the point of just wanting to do the surgery to be able to move on. I really tried to avoid surgery but I am running out of time and the mental strain is too much now.
