Membrane sweep, should i go for it?

last week i was 37 weeks along and my dr told me the baby was getting big and i was 3 cm dilated so she offered to do a membrane sweep to speed things along but i was too scared and refused..

Today i'm going for my 38 week check up and i'm considering it..

Is it true that it hurts more than child birth itself?

Re: Membrane sweep, should i go for it?

  • Not at all I didn't find. It's just uncomfortable for a quick second. I say go for it if you're anxious to get things going.

I had one at 37w5d with my son- it was a piece of cake and I actually ended up rupturing my water not long after (I was already 4 cm, 100% when being "swept")

Didn't even make it home after doc apt- ended up headed straight to labor and delivery :)

  • If your doctor says it's okay, I think you should go for it. If you're uncomfortable and anxious then I would definitely do it.
    Good luck Mama :)
  • I didn't find it was anythjng unbearable. It doesn't last long And it worked for me

  • Okay, I guess I'm the group wimp- but yes, it hurt like hell. But it's true that it lasts for like 4-8 seconds. So you can do anything for that long. And no, even though it's painful- it doesn't touch actual child birth. I had it done twice last pregnancy bc I had had a LEEP procedure done so when they went to strip my membranes, they couldn't at first bc there was so much scar tissue build up! Hugely painful. But after my second one, I went home and had dinner, went to bed and at 1 am woke up and water broke in bed! So just make sure you're totally ready.
  • I had 2 sweeps done last pregnancy. I don't think either actually helped, since they were both well before I went into labor.

I didn't find them overly painful. Uncomfortable, yes. They did not come close to the pain of childbirth.
  • I asked my OB about it but he said in his experience they're not very effective and hurt a lot.

But all of the ladies above seem to have had good luck!
  • I had decided to go for it readin your comments but when my doctor checked i made it to 4 cm and i'm thinned out, she said she predicts i'll deliver within a week as it is and she is off tomorrow so i didn't want to ris going into labour tomorrow lol
  • I had it done 3 times my last pregnancy. It wasn't super painful but yes it did hurt but didn't last long. Not sure it worked for me though.

  • Either way ends in a baby. Do what YOU want. :)
  • Had mine done at 38 weeks last pg. I was going in the next day to be induced due to PIH. It jumped started my labour.

  • Had it done twice last time... Went into labor about 12 hrs after 2nd sweep (39 weeks).. Didn't seem too bad at all..
  • I was 10 days late with my older daughter and I had my membranes stripped/sweeped 3 times.  Didn't have any effect on me at all.  Still ended up being induced.
  • I'm going to ask my doc to do it at my 38/39 week appt if I'm not progressing. As selfish as it sounds, I want labor to start before my MIL forces her way into the delivery room again... She won't take no for an answer and she's a panicky/very intense when there's excitement... Not something I want to deal with while I try to go au naturale
  • I had it done yesterday at my 38wk. I was only 1.5cm 70% effaced which was the same as last week even after a weekend of contractions. It was painful and only caused slight cramping. I'm losing bits of my mucus plug but not expecting labor from it. I'll give it another go if baby isn't here next week.

Suddenly I'm feeling like she'll be overdue. Ugh
  • @MommaAlyx lol I feel your pain, doesn't your hospital ask you who is allowed in the delivery room? When we preregistered I solely listed DH. Not quite comfortable having anyone else in the room. [-X

  • I had it done @ 38 weeks with my son. He was born 3 days later. I also had it done with my daughter @ 39 weeks. She was born 2 days later. No pain with either and it only helps if your body is ready.
  • @rwiggin2 did you get cramping or spotting after your sweep?
  • I just had one yesterday. It was uncomfortable but not painful. I had contractions last night for about 3 hours but then they stopped. If he is not here by next week we will do it again.
  • Nothing happened immediately. There was never any spotting. Once I left the doctors I began contracting which were pretty intense but they stopped after 5-6 hours. This was on a Friday. Saturday I began losing my mucus plug and Sunday morning had the bloody show. Still no contractions. Then my water broke, a trickle around 9 pm Sunday. Still no contractions. I went to the hospital at 4 am, they completely broke my water at 8 am that Monday. I had my first contraction at 8:30 and baby was born @ 1:18 that same day with 20 minutes of pushing.
  • I'm 37+2..Bc I'm high risk due to previous preterm pregnancy losses (this is the longest I've carried and baby girl is great!) I've already been informed that they will likely induce me before my 40th week, if I don't start labor naturally before hand. While I'm truly grateful for my daughter and this blessing, like many of you, I SUFFER with some pretty bad symptoms. That and the fact that I've gained 62lbs(really puts unbelievable pressure on my hips legs and back) really has me uncomfortable. Should I ask for a sweep to see I things will get going naturally? I really don't want to be induced through pills inserted in my vagina or petocin. I want to labor as naturally as possible, but still get things moving. Last cervical check I was 1cm and 50% effaced. Just worried bc I've been having contractions for 2 weeks, at one point her heart rate was dropping but then returned to normal. I'm concerned that the same is happening now and we don't know it. Ty for any advice
