Is it normal for midwives to delivery babies at the hospital instead of doctors

I'm just curious, I thought that the doctor at my physician is going to deliver me, but I've only seen him once and another lady doctor once, All of my other appointments have been with the 2 midwives they have there......I'm starting to think they will be the ones delivering me...I have seen online on their Facebook website that they delivery the babies. I'm kinda hoping that one of the midwives does deliver me, bc I really don't care for the other doctors. Anyone else getting delivered from a midwife?

  • At my ob practice there are several ob's and 4 mw's. our hospital has "on call" physician from that practice. Mw's don't deliver on weekends, and the ob's are on call, but during the week the mw's are on call and deliver the babies. Ob's are on duty but it jus depends on how many babies are being born at one time, but at our hospital, it is quite common to have a mw.

  • My last OB practice was a joint as well. I really liked it. The midwives did the deliveries unless complications arose, then the doctors would step in. So for me, a midwife did the delivery but an OB came in to stitch me up because I had a pretty bad tear.

There isn't a practice like that in the area I live now, which I think is a shame =(

  • I'm going through a group of 6 midwives, so I just get whoever is on call for that day. I haven't seen a doctor the whole pregnancy.
  • I would ask them! Make sure you are on the same page here.... I preferred midwife care so I am seen by only midwives for my appts and whichever midwife is on call will attend the delivery unless there is a complication, in which case they on call supervising ob will step in... In my area, midwife care is rare and not the norm so this is an exception that is made at certain hospitals that allow midwives
  • MWs caught my other two and hopefully that will be the case with this LO as well.  At our hospital you choose either the MW group or OB, the MWs actually outnumber the OBs at my hospital.  There are 10 MWs and I think 6 OBs.  I have never met the OBs though.
  • I'm at a hospital that has a midwifery program and you can choose doctors or midwives. I chose the midwives. They work in the clinic and labor and delivery and they will be the ones to attend the birth unless I suddenly become high risk, then the OB will step in. Even if I decide to do an epidural, the midwife will still be there. It's nice to have a holistic option and still have the peace of mind knowing I'm in a medical facility if (God forbid) something goes wrong.
  • It's standard practice for the midwives to deliver where I get care. The OBs do the more complicated births and c-sections, unless you specifically request an OB.

  • My place is a group practice, and midwives always deliver unless the Dr needs to for some reason like emergencies.
  • We're delivering with a midwife at home this time but with my first a nurse midwife delivered my son in the hospital. I saw the obgyn from the office a few times throughout my first pregnancy but mostly met with the midwife and she's who delivered him.
  • My midwife has privileges at a couple hospitals and birth center. They also do homebirths. When they do hospital births, they have total autonomy unless an emergency arises...which it rarely does when they are in charge :)
