  • They monitor your babies heart rate and your contractions (if any) for a set amount of time (or longer) to evaluate that all is well. It provides a bench mark for the future. I go twice weekly for them for gd. Too early for contractions, but they watch for approproate accelerations in the babies heart rate. It is non invasive and common. Ask a lot of questions. I like them because they are a nice way to gather more information on the baby and his/her health.,

  • A NST is when you sit for a time period, normally 30-45 mins and get strapped around your belly with monitors. You then get a button to push every time you feel movement.

This is a way they monitor the baby and make sure the movements are normal and the babies are healthy inside. It also helps determine if/when they may need to schedule an induction if necessary. I had several with my first pregnancy with DS and will have them weekly starting at 32 weeks with this one due to GD. It's no big deal, just takes a little time out of your day.

  • I've been doing them for a few weeks now since my babe is measuring small. It's actually kind of nice to get the reassurance that all is okay. You sit there with the straps on your belly and sometimes the baby will be sleeping. My advice- bring some juice or a lollipop to have at the start of the test. The longer baby sleeps- the longer it takes to take the test. It has worked for me! Baby moves like crazy after some cold Orange juice!
  • Lol, I have this at every appointment now and didn't realize what this was!! Damn foreign countries! Just thought of it as "heart rate monitoring."

Mine last about a half hour, and I usually fall asleep. It took me once or twice to realize they were charting both my heart rate and LO's. When I breathe slower and deeper, LO seems to chill, too. Apparently I slept through a contraction today.

This really makes me laugh and feel dumb. Glad I read this thread!
  • I have my first nst appointment on friday. Mine is for high blood pressure, my doc explained that they want to make sure baby's heart rate goes up when they move not down that shows the stress. Thanks for the oj recommendation I have to take time off and the less time I take the more I'll have for lo later!
  • My doc told me today I have to have them every week from 36 weeks just due to my age (I'm 40). No GD or other risk factors. I have mixed feelings. I guess so close to the due date it will be good to get more information on how the baby is doing, but on the other hand I feel singled out for an extra procedure which takes time and may cost me more money just due to my age. It will take time away from work if I'm still working which I plan to be. I am curious about how close I am to labor and whether/when I start having contractions, do you think the nst can provide any advance info on whether labor is close or not?

I am in the same boat (due May 30th), and 41.  They do it because our placentas can be worn out and babe may not get enough nutrition, etc, so this is one way to monitor everything is ok.  I am also going for an ultrasound/growth scan next week too, to look at my placenta and do a measurement on baby.  Hopefully it won't be an expensive test for you.  Really, they just put a strap on your belly and you sit there and it records the heart rate (& contractions).  Just don't panic either if the baby moves A LOT and the monitor loses the beat - when I went for one about a month ago she was barrel rolling, and there'd be long pauses since it couldn't capture the beat.
