What is everyone doing for stretch marks?

So for all you mamas trying to prevent stretch marks, what methods are you using?
I have been trying to use the Palmer's cocoa butter stretch mark lotion but this crap STINKS!!!
I would love to hear any other recommendations y'all might have! And any STMs that have used something before if you think it helped or if it's not even worth it!

Re: What is everyone doing for stretch marks?

  • There are probably a dozen threads on stretch marks so if you don't get a lot of feedback here, be sure to use the search bar at the bottom of the page and search stretch marks.

I'm doing cool showers, lots of coconut oil head to toe, lots of water (although that one is tough for me!) and cocoa butter on occasion. Gaining weight slow and steady is key. Good luck!

I used palmers, I didn't mind the smell though. I've had stretch marks since I was like 12 from a growth spurt. So I honestly didn't make a deal about it myself!! Lol I make DH tell me they're beautiful. He calls them my "battle scars"! :)

I wouldn't get too worked up about preventing stretch marks. More than 90% of pregnant women get them and they'll fade after LO is born. Staying hydrated and fit will help but,

    I got this from webmd

    "Is Prevention Possible?
Unfortunately, there’s no way to prevent stretch marks. There’s not a cream, lotion, or “mommy” balm that can do that -- and if that’s the claim on the bottle, don’t be fooled, Lupo says.

It's always a good idea to keep your skin hydrated with a rich lotion or cream, Lupo says, especially if it makes your skin feel better, look smoother and more toned, and helps the itchiness that can come with your growing belly."

  • I use tummy butter. I love it! I got some stretch marks with my son but they weren't that obvious over time...they are all coming back to me now as my tummy gets bigger. Oh the joys. It doesn't bother me too much though. I'm just a tiger that has earned my stripes. I don't show off my stomach anyway.

  • I've heard great things about Mederma, but it's expensive. It's on sale right now on Groupon for like $29 including shipping! Normally $40. I'm soooo tempted to order it :-w
  • I agree Palmers cocoa butter stinks! Bought some and couldn't stand the smell. Definitely returned that! I've been using Burts bees tummy butter!
  • I use Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil and really like it! Its an oil you put on your damp skin after a shower. It helps in skin toning, elasticity, fades and prevents stretchmarks (claims to at least). I've used it since about week 5 and don't have any stretchmarks yet. Fingers crossed!
  • I've been using mama bee body butter twice a day and the vitamin e oil right after the shower. I'm extremely prone to stretch marks so in trying to be proactive. I also drink about a gallon of water a day and trying to keep my weight gain down. I don't have any marks yet and I definely have a bump now!
  • My sister got stretch marks despite using expensive creams. I've been using burst bees since its affordable and doesn't smell.
  • You can't prevent stretch marks so I'm not going to waste $$$ trying. However, I use coconut oil as a moisturizer because pregnancy has made my skin so dry.
  • I use burts bee mana butter & every other night I cut vitamin e pills open & rub that into my belly.
  • Unfortunately stretch marks are generally predetermined by your genetics. I use coconut oil to stay moisturized, but any moisturizer you use isn't going to penetrate down to the level of skin that actually tears. Drink lots of water and try to gain as slow and steady as possible.

  • I did all I could in the beginning--water, coconut oil, etc. but it didn't do anything so now I'm just sitting back and watching them grow!
  • i am using burts bees mama bee nourishing oil because it smells nice (IMO) and is easy to quickly lather on. not sure if it will help on the stretch marks or not? i would HOPE that moisturizing of any kind would be helpful.

has anyone used mothers special blend? blech, i used it for a couple of weeks until i found the burts bees mama bee stuff. the mothers special blend had a smell that was so offensive.
  • I'm using Motherlove belly salve, mainly for comfort/itching as I know stretch marks can't be prevented. This is baby #3; I lotioned/oiled up religiously with #1 and woke up with stretch marks in my 39th week.
  • I do have to say, this is my favorite belly cream. I've tried several- Palmer's, Burts Bees, and some others I can't remember the names.
  • Bio oil!!! Works amazing, I had stretch marks a while ago and I bought the bio oil, use it twice a day and they were gone within the first month. I don't have many stretch marks yet but I've used the oil since I was 8 weeks and the stretch marks I do have are very very faint!
  • I know the palmers belly butter stinks but it does work I used it twice a day with my daughter and no stretch marks despite some on my Breast but now pregnant with my second I don't think I'll be that lucky I'm already larger than what I was at this time of my daughter

  • My 1st child I used everything from coconut oil to palmers coco butter and nothing worked I still got stretch marks. I don't think those lotions work ur skin can only stretch so far.
  • I know there isn't a lot you can do to stop them because they are mostly genetic but my skin is sooooo itchy!! So I have been using an oil by the honest company that I got at target and putting a toning lotion by basq from motherhood maternity on top of the oil after my showers at night. My mom got pretty bad stretch marks (she also gained a lot more than the recommended amount of weight) and I have some from white one from puberty so we will see, I am 18 weeks today and so far no stretch marks!

  • You know that stretch marks are genetic and that there is literally nothing you can do to prevent them if you're predispositioned to get them, right?
  • Definitely Basq NYC they have a scrub, oil, and cream. I use all three and it has a very soothing smell. Has great reviews. Molly sims also used during her pregnancy. It's not cheap, but not too expensive either. Last a long time also! Hope that helps. Oh and staying very hydrated and eating collagen boosting foods!
  • You know that stretch marks are genetic and that there is literally nothing you can do to prevent them if you're predispositioned to get them, right?

My doctor disagrees with this and said there is no predisposition to stretch marks. Our bodies are designed to stretch with us as we grow, and if we take good care of them and grow slow and steady, then stretch marks can be completely prevented or at least kept to an absolute minimum. I know waaaay too many mamas who are super tiny and gave birth to huge babies without a single stretch mark, even though their mothers or sisters or grandmothers cousin gained lots of extra weight and had stretch marks. There are some unpreventable stretch marks, like the ones that come from sudden stretching of your breasts or having triplets (yes, there are cases that extreme stretching of the skin will cause it to tear). My doctor said staying hydrated, moisturized, and fit (gain weight slow and steady!) will prevent MOST cases of stretch marks. I don't say this to insult any mama or women that got them, but there is no reason to insinuate that it's impossible to keep them at bay. I don't even mind if I get a few stretch marks, but I'll still be taking extra great care of my skin to try to prevent too many of them!
  • You are 100% correct @mrscaterosales !! Agree completely!
  • I use Mama Mio tummy rub oil. It is more absorbent than Bio oil and less greasy.
  • Thanks @mrscaterosales !! I needed some inspiration to stay hydrated. I noticed some small marks on my bum cheeks last night and this stops now!! With DS I was 28 and only gained 18 pounds and had one small area right under my belly button that stretched, but nowhere else. I know it's possible to avoid bad stretch marks- personally.. And I'm going to be a good girl and drink my water and do my best!!

I think PP meant, there's NO topical moisturizer that can prevent stretch marks. Staying moisturized can help with itchiness and general appearance of the skin but stretch marks are developed wayyy too far down in the skin for any topical moisturizer to reach to prevent them.

Also, a steady weight gain and staying hydrated can HELP with SOME stretch marks. But, for example, your stomach is going to grow, regardless of the amount of calories you take in. And if your predisposed to stretch marks, there's nothing you can do to prevent them from occurring on places like this that are going to grow no matter what you do.

I've literally never heard of a doctor saying that genetics have NOTHING to do with getting stretch marks while pregnant and that there COMPLETELY avoidable during pregnancy.... Depending on OUR choices. Some women's skin is more suseptable to stretch marks than others... Everyone isn't in the same category.

Also, you don't have to have "triplets" in order to warrant stretch marks. Every single woman I know who's gotten stretch marks on her stomach due to pregnancy has had ONE child... 40-90% of pregnant women get stretch marks during pregnancy so insinuating that stretch marks are completely avoidable is completely false. They are NOTHING to be ashamed of and most likely, most of us will get them.

My advice to everyone is to accept that your body is going to change and embrace it. Stretch marks will fade, they really aren't that big of a deal, and statistically most of us will get them regardless of the preventative measures we take. Plus, staying hydrated and fit are things we should all be aiming for during pregnancy anyways, so if it ends up helping reducing stretch marks that's a bonus!

So there's literally no point on using lotion in order to prevent stretch marks.

My advice to everyone is to accept that your body is going to change and embrace it. Stretch marks will fade, they really aren't that big of a deal, and statistically most of us will get them regardless of the preventative measures we take. Just enjoy your pregnancy and worry about helping to fade whatever stretch marks you get after your baby is here.
I understand what you're saying and that's why I said I'm not trying to insult anyone that has stretch marks, they DO happen, but a lot of it is preventable with hard work (if that's important to you). If it's not a big deal to you and you don't mind them, just embrace it. As I said, I don't mind getting some stretch marks and they might pop up towards the end of this thing, no big deal.

I was just simply explaining what my doctor told me, that if you want to say it's "genetic", that's fine, but it really is just the speed at which your skin stretches, regardless of whether stretch marks are common in your family. Our skin is part of our genetic makeup which came from our parents, so yes, in that sense you can say it's genetic.

As I said, there are SOME unpreventable stretch marks, like the ones that occur when your breasts grow a cup size within a few weeks! Your skin stretched fast and no amount of water, exercise, or lotion will stop that. That is NOT what my doctor was saying. Her point was simply that they can be prevented if you keep your skin moisturized inside and out and gain weight slow and steady, which is the healthiest way to do it anyway, so there's no reason to argue with that logic. No, you don't have to be having triplets to have your skin stretch dramatically, but the point was that a woman having multiples is going to deal with much more rapid stretching than the rest of us, so is more likely to get those "unpreventable stretch marks".

I realize it's a sensitive topic for some people, but the poster wanted to know what she could do for stretch marks and I think it's perfectly fair to share my doctor's advice. It isn't fool proof, and I don't think anyone expects a miracle lotion to prevent their stretch marks. As you said, our skin is going to stretch regardless of the calories we take in or the water we drink, and my doctor's point was that our skin is designed to stretch. It stretches with us from birth to adolescence and throughout pregnancy, we just have to take extra good care of our bodies and skin to limit the battle scars left behind.

You know a lot of moms that got stretch marks while pregnant, I know a lot that stayed super fit and drank nothing but water and prevented any stretch marks, so our opinions are different based on experiences. You don't have to agree with me, I didn't say I had a miracle solution.

This is just the guidelines that I'm going to follow to try to prevent them to the best of my ability and my doctor agrees that it is the best course to take.
  • I heard body shops cocoa lotion works well - I have dry-ish skin so I am looking forward to getting some even just for that! Just ordered it :) I try and drink a lot of water but am not enjoying it ...
