does anyone else nurse their babies to sleep? When did you stop? Is it harder for your baby to fall asleep on their own without nursing them? Does it establish bad sleeping habits?
Most resources suggest that your LO will no develop sleeping habits until about 4-6 months. So for now, nurse away! For the moment, my LO sometimes just can't help herself and falls asleep during her bedtime nursing. I'm certainly not going to wake her up. I'm a FTM, but most of my mom friends have stopped nursing their LO's to sleep anywhere between 3 months and 6 months with no sleep habit issues. It certainly can become more difficult the longer you keep up the practice, but for now there should be no need to worry. The same can be said for rocking or singing. As my sister in law says about her toddler and six month old, enjoy the moments when your LOs fall asleep on you because it soon ends!
I spent 18 months nursing my now 3 year old to sleep. This time around I'm trying things differently because of the sleep issues she had - i don't think i can handle those frustrations again.
if your baby will fall asleep without your nipple in it's mouth i'd encourage that.
Thanks ladies! He gets so milk drunk that not even burping wakes him up! I'm going to enjoy it for a little while longer, he's almost three weeks, and then try and stop him from falling asleep on the job lol
I've been wondering the same thing. With my first, I nursed her to sleep until 5 months when we sleep trained her. It took us three days and she has slept through the night since. Looking back, I wish I had started earlier because from 3-5 months we got no sleep trying to get her to sleep without whipping out the breast. It was an issue for me because I was back at work. The answer to your question lies in what is most doable for you. If you can function on less sleep, then by all means nurse away. But for me it led to bad sleep habits later on. I am going to sleep train at 3.5-4 months this time.
Same as PP, I nursed DD1 till 18 months when she weaned herself. Perfect timing as I was expecting #2. I'm planning on doing the same with DD2. My oldest is a great sleeper, sleeps 10 hours straight! Of course, I'm a SAHM so my schedule is flexible. Do whatever you find works best for your family.
