Baby's gender

I am not good with surprises. I'm a very curious person and the unknown drives me crazy. With that said, I'm so impatient to learn my baby's gender! I've heard of people being able to clearly tell what their baby is at 13.. 14 weeks either by ultrasound or blood testing. I've heard others say they were after 20 weeks before they found out and that some doctors refuse to point out gender until week 20 or so. If I have to wait that long I'm going to be so disappointed, lol. I'm a FTM so I'm not sure what I can do to find out as early as possible. Or should I just bite the bullet and wait it out?

You sound just like me! I hate waiting for anything! I was the kid who unwrapped her presents and then wrapped them back up bc I was so impatient... so not knowing the sex is killing me! Im a FTM as well so im sure the suspense is even greater for us as this is all new. My doc said that he can do a test at 16 weeks but Im only 10 weeks now so not sure if I will be able to hold out that long. There is a blood test that can determine the sex of the baby at as little as 10 weeks! It is 99% effective in determining a girl and 98% effective in determining a boy (from what I have researched). My doctor unfortunately doesn't do this test but I have found one close by that does. Been trying to hold off but really debating making a one time appointment with this other doc just so I can get the blood test done! :/

  • The sex is usually determined at your 20 week anatomy scan.

Yes there is a blood test that you can get at 10 weeks (takes 8-10 business days for results), but this is only for high risk pregnancies or those that are AMA and the purpose of the test is genetic testing, NOT to find out the sex. It's just something they can determine at that time. Your insurance will not cover this unless you qualify as high risk, and it costs upwards of $2k out of pocket. I got this test yesterday but we are Team Green so will not be finding out.

The 13/14 week scans have a higher chance of being wrong. So you may find something out during an ultrasound that early, but it may end up changing at your 20w A/S.

Its not always accurate either. Just wait till 20weeks and enjoy it.. ;) I'm impatient too. but with my first it was a special day. We went early in the am then me and daddy spent the whole day together and even wandered around babies r us had lunch and made a whole day of it.. It was a great day.
  • This was exactly the question I came on here to ask. I'm not sure how early we found out with our son but it was before 18 weeks...sometime between 15 and 17 I'm thinking. My BFF is telling me she found out with her daughter at 12 weeks - went early because her sister was going away to college and wanted to see the baby. One of my sister in laws said 16 weeks is the earliest time to be 'safe' - so it's probably not going to 'change' or be misrepresented. My other sister in law said 15 weeks and it was a girl. I'm so incredibly impatient. haha This is our ninja baby and shouldn't even be here, so I'm so excited and just want to enjoy it all - all of it - knowing the sex is part of it all for me :) I think it's all a personal opinion on the 'when' part - as long as you know that a boy is a boy but a girl could be a boy! haha

  • I found out with my first at 15w 5d by 4d ultrasound. It was pretty clear what it was lol but I also have 2 friends who did that and then the baby turned out to be different at the 20 week. Were waiting until birth to find out this time.
  • Honestly, as much as I'm excited to know my baby's sex, I would wait. The longer you wait, the more accurate their determination will be! It can be hard to tell before 16-20 weeks.

Also, the correct term is 'sex' not 'gender'. Sex refers to a person's biological anatomy & gender is the socially constructed roles & behaviors that are attributed to men & women. A person may be biologically a male, but identify as a female. So, technically, you won't know what gender your baby associates with until they are much older. It's an important human rights concern, so I think it's good for people to know the difference.

Not trying to start an argument here (you should see some of yesterday's boards!!) but it's a topic that is important to me.
And you handled that correction with class and grace! Thank you! <3
  • My doctor won't do anatomy scan until 20 weeks which killed my with my first. But, this time I want to be surprised. However, DH wants to know. It is his right to find out and I he finds out, he will blab before we deliver so I might as well find out at 20 weeks too. %-(

I'm having a chromosome blood test done called "The Harmony Prenatal Test". It can be done at 10 weeks. And is 99% accurate whereas the tests and measurements they do at 20 weeks can sometimes result in false positives. My insurance won't cover it because I don't meet any of the criteria for it being "medically necessary" but my doctor said this particular one is only $195 as opposed to the $2000 tests. My husband and I opted to do it and pay out of pocket to have the early reassurance. I am also going to find out the sex as an added bonus.
  • We're waiting until the anatomy scan to find out the sex. It's not booked yet but should be around 20 weeks. We didn't find out with our first so I'm excited!!

  • We did the Panorama test last week at almost 10 weeks and will get results soon. It is a simple blood draw and is NOT for only high risk patients. This is my first pregnancy, 27, and I've had no complications. It costs $125 out of pocket. My doctor recommended it because it is 99% effective at detecting chromosomal abnormalities (including Downs) and gender. It's more accurate and less invasive than normal prenatal testing, even ultrasound.

We are having this same test next monday when we go! My doctor didn't know how much it would be, it depends on insurance. She said it could be anywhere from $50 to $250. I don't care, we are really getting anxious to find out!!

Same here! I want to be team green and SO wants to know as soon as possible. I just know he will spill the beans to me so I might as well find out at the same time. Sigh [-(
  • See if you have a 3D ultrasound place that does gender reveals. There's one about 45 mins from where I live that does a scan at 15 weeks to reveal the gender. It costs about $50-$60
  • I opted to go with an elective ultrasound at 15 weeks with my last pregnancy and they accurately identified that I was having a boy.  I was too impatient to wait.
  • You can pay out of pocket (less than $100 usually) to have a gender/sex reveal ultrasound at one of those ultrasound chains. Most require that you are at least 16w0d, but a few will try as early as 15w0d. They have a little more success confirming boys that early on.
