Unpasteurized Cheese- my most recent failure

Saturday night I ate 3 different kinds of unpasteurized cheese, not really realizing the possibility of listeria. I just forgot!

Of course I think I have it, my unborn child will die, even though I have no symptoms. Dr office is closed today- marathon Monday in Boston- and I'm terrified. No appointment until Wednesday where I will likely demand the blood test.

Anyone with experience or advice here?

What stupid things have you done and regretted in your pregnancy?

  • Like PP said I believe the US pasteurizes all the cheeses here. Did you see the label? I eat feta and blue cheese crumbles a lot on salads but the lables say pasteurized on it

  • It wasn't a fancy restaurant, but it was a snobby beer place and the waitress told me it was unpasteurized. I just didn't put two and two together. It was good, just not good enough for risks!

    Ugh how on earth do the Duggars do it? One pregnancy is scaring the shit out of me! Let alone 19!
  • Ugh, I understand your pain! Pregnancy has been so hard just based on eating alone!

    I have accidentally eaten undercooked meat, dirty lettuce, and goodness knows what else! I was so panicked about listeria for a long time, but it could really be in ANYTHING and if you had it, you would get fever and flu-like symptoms. So barring those symptoms, try not to worry!

    You don't know you have listeria (you probably don't), so you're likely not hurting your baby with that. But you do have stress and that does affect the baby. you're doing everything you can to protect the baby, and part of that should also be NOT STRESSING. Try to take solice in the fact that you will have symptoms of you're sick, and only 1/8,000 pregnant women get listeria. Those chances are tiny. Get fresh air and try to let go of the stress.

    You will be fine and your sweet pea will be fine as well! (I've given myself this pep talk about a million times.)
  • Listeria can be in lots of different foods. Do you freak out when you eat fruit? A salad? Ice cream? I think you are fine. Chances are very slim a restaurant would be serving cheeses that would make their customers sick. I'm sure when you talk to your doctor she will tell you not to worry.

I don't even think the stuff is even real cheese and gave me diahrreah in the middle of the night. So, I started thinking I had listeria. Next day, besides feeling tired as usual, I was fine. A few weeks ago, found my chicken wasn't cooked all the way so I made myself throw up. I know how it feels to be scared about it. You are probably fine though. They do sell raw milk cheeses at the farmers market and I think even whole foods. I haven't heard of anyone getting sick from the stuff sold around here but personally am trying to avoid it. Listeria was found in pasteurized ice cream so it can show up anywhere but I think is very rare. :-)

    I've eaten velveta. I figured that was pasteurized for sure. I've had several freak out moments about food. Now I just try to remind myself I've made it 32 weeks and everything has been fine. I'm sure you and your LO are fine!

  • Mind you I choose it carefully but I've been eating grassfed raw cheese since day 1. To legally be sold raw in the US it has to be aged past 60 days which some feel lowers the risk of listeria even more and you get more nutritional value. Not for everyone but my midwife was supportive.
  • I guess I am a terrible pregnant woman because I eat what I want when I am hungry.  I had such severe nausea and vomiting the first 4 months of my pregnancy and lost so much weight, that when I was finally able to eat my doctor said "Eat whatever sounds good!"  I would rather eat a turkey sandwich that has nutritional value than fast food that's 'cooked.'  I obviously try not to eat these things excessively.  I feel like maybe I'm taking a risk, but so far baby girl has been perfectly healthy and I have finally started gaining some weight and not feeling like I'm wasting away.  Either way, if you're not having symptoms I would try not to stress about it...no one is perfect!

    You are likely fine... Tell your doc and see what he/she advises.

    It wasn't Public House in Brookline, by chance?

    I liked cheese before WI. I used to be a firm believer in CA 'good cheese comes from happy cows. Happy cows come from CA'. but then I moved to Seattle and had some specialty cheese from... Somewhere. Started branching away from the boring cheddar and pepperjack, into Gouda and goat cheese, and whatever else. Moved to NY and went to a fancy place and had a cheese and wine plate and experimented further.

    Was excited to move to cheese head land for the cheese. And got here and realized a great truth - CA cows are not happy. They are stuck in barns all day every day, because if they aren't they will roast under the sun. And all they do all day in those barns is eat corn feed. Cows don't eat corn. They eat pasture. Cows here are chilling in a field, cruising, munching pasture. WI cows are happier, methinks. They do make better cheese, anyway

    That was such a beautiful story! Put a little tear in my eye. Have you had Pierre Robert? It's my favorite. I don't know if it's pasteurized or not. I only eat it once or twice a year so it stays special! Haven't had it since I've been pregnant. Mmmm. Creamy deliciousness.

  • @Frogger5 Cheese from France!?!? I haven't. I'm going to have to chase some down. Would be easier if we were still in NY with all its specialty shops, but maybe I can find some next time we travel to green bay. I'd be shocked if we could find cheese from France on the peninsula, tho

    Yeah, good point. Well, Green Bay might do it. Just keep it under your hat whenever you get to a fancy restaurant. You'll come across it some day!

    I'm from WI originally :) and yes, really happy cows make a huge difference. PS I make my own ice cream at home with local raw eggs and don't get sick ...yet Bluebell...
  • You will probably be fine. Listeria is a risk but such a low one. You are more likely to get it from produce. It's just a precaution, like a helmet. Just because you don't wear one doesn't mean you're going to crash your bike, it's just safer if you wear one. It's just safer to not eat unpasteurized cheese.
  • Thanks everyone! I called the nurse and she practically laughed since I have no symptoms and apparently they usually appear in 24 hours.

    It was Armsby Abbey in Worcester MA. They were very clear when they told me about it being unpasteurized so it was totally my fault. Delicious, and stupid!

  • You are probably fine. I am a product of several unpasteurized foods and drinks. I grew up on a farm and my mom makes a point to tell me she drank milk from the cow all the time with each of her pregnancy. She also ate unpasteurized cheese. So don't fret, all 3 of us were fine and actually healthier as kids than the normal child. I also ate this stuff as a child and adult.
  • I love the happy cows from ca! I live in seattle and man do we have some awesome cheese here. I have also branched out to goudas feta and goat. All have been pasturized. I use to freak out about the cheese the first few months and my hubby would be like it's fine its on a pizza and heated, but I had some raw cookie dough the other day and man it tasted amazing.

    I ate icecream from brusters around lunch today (chocolate chip cookie dough...I didn't even think about the cookie dough until now). Anyways, I've had such horrible gas the last 3 hours and needless to say I have had diarriahha also. I threw up because my stomach was cramping from the gas so badly that it was making me nauseous. I didn't think much of it, I figured I just had a little GI bug, but then I started reading this and looked up symptoms of Listeria and of course now I worry about that lol. Lord, help me X_X
