Working out?

I know this is a matter that differs from woman to woman, and something you are supposed to dicuss with your dr/mw, but I'm just curious how many here are working out or plan on continuing to work out throughout their pregnancy.

I'm a runner, and I usually run anywhere from 16-30 miles a week. I have definitely cut back. Mostly because I am too tired and not motivated! But I want to keep up with running at least a bit (probably not as far or as fast), and also incorporate other workouts into my routine to stay strong throughout my pregnancy. Does anyone have any awesome workout websites, stretches, or any suggestions like that? Gotta keep the motivation alive! :)

Re: Working out?

  • Hello fellow runner! I have also cut back on distance and pace but I'm still getting out there whenever the exhaustion isn't too much to take. I also do Pure Barre and yoga which I really enjoy. I downloaded some prenatal yoga videos but I think I'm going to hold off on those until I'm further along (only 6 weeks now).

  • I run as well! Still running and still kicking butt in the gym. I feel better when I workout. :)
  • I found some stuff on this site but been conitnueing cardio etc at the gym. I had gestational diabetes with #1 and I would like to try and avoid it this time if at all possible and excercise is supposed to help with that
  • I *finally* got the okay to start back after a threatened miscarriage about a week and a half ago.  I'll be doing about 30 mins of cardio (light jogging or elliptical work) and 30 mins of weights (not pushing my limits - just maintaining) 3-5x a week.  The only real difference from before is that I won't run (body temp gets too high) and I won't push myself on the weights (obvious reasons).

  • I have been working out with a trainer (also good friend :) who now know that my needs have changed. I also got a prenatal yoga DVD to do at home. Hopefully can keep myself from gaining too much baby weight. :)
  • I am totally with you on that! No running for this lady unless it's for my life. Haha
  • Before I got pregnant, I was trying to lose weight by doing cardio and weights. I've continued the same workouts, but eased up on the intensity- mostly because I start to feel nauseous while working out. I think it will really just be a wait and see how things go. I plan to exercise my whole pregnancy if it is possible!
  • I'm an avid athlete and because of multiple miscarriages after my daughter, my second child...my Dr has banned me from most things except walking briskly because my progesterone like to take too deep of dives for some reason. So praying this little bean will stick things out with me and be my new running buddy.
  • I've only been running for 3.5 months. I've gotten up to 13 miles a week. It's been tough since I haven't been running for very long. I definitely plan on continuing to work out, but I'm probably not going to push myself. I've already stopped my training schedule. My runs are turning into run/walks. And I usually cannot run a mile now without having to potty--even if I go before we go out to run. I'm just going to do what I can. I am making sure to keep doing core workouts.
  • I'll be working out still. Maybe take it down a notch. I don't run much but I do weights and bootcamp. I'll just need to slow down and maybe higher reps and lower weight.
  • Love pure barre! Hoping to do it all the way through. I think they have special "baby on board" modifications?

Hello fellow runner. I am planning on continuing running as long as I can. I just finished an 8 mile run because I have a half marathon next weekend. Although I was hoping for a PR, this little surprise may impact that :). After the race I'm decreasing my mileage and incorporating some different weight exercises and maybe spinning.
  • I'm also still running. I have a half that I plan to take a lot slower in a few weeks, though I have to see how I am feeling then. The exhaustion has cut a lot into training runs. I rather foolishly ran a slow full marathon at 7 weeks with my last pregnancy, and it was fine.

  • I'm still running! I'm going to try to keep my mileage up but cut back on pace. No more intense speed workouts for this girl! I have a 10 mile race next month that I was going to try to sub-90 but I think I'll just run for fun. The following weekend I'm running the Tinker Bell Half at Disneyland...again, just for fun. It's my brother's first half and I'm running it with him!

  • I'm nervous about this. I'm in a strength training/bootcamp program that works out three times per week. I work out pretty hard but know I'm going to need to tone it down now that I'm preggo - at least for awhile. I don't really want to tell many people this early but I'll be telling my trainer so she can help me figure out a better way to work the weights (lower weight, higher reps, etc) and so she doesn't yell at me during workouts if I try and lower the weights on my own :) I'm sure after our workout Monday I'll have a  much better idea of what I'll need to do.

I don't want to cut it out complete and have been doing it consistently for long enough that my body is used to it, but I definitely don't want to do anything that will put the pregnancy at risk in these first few months.
  • Hey ladies. I'm accustomed to doing heavy weight training plus cardio about 5 times a week. I only just got the baby news. This is my first pregnancy and I've just told my trainer so I expect things will be changing. I'veI've so been told that once I'm able, I should be able to train throughout my pregnancy. I'm nervous but excited to have a new little training buddy. :)
  • I'm planning on working out throughout my pregnancy.  I ran my first marathon last November and I love to run.  Even though I'm getting tired easily, I still manage a good amount of miles each week.  I'll also swim a lot during the summer, which is a great exercise during pregnancy.

I just wouldn't start a new routine or overwork it.

  • I've been so tired but I think I'm going to go to the gym tomorrow! I miss it so much, I was doing cardio and weights to lose weight beforehand and fell off the wagon when I found out.
  • Marathon runner, horse back rider and weight trainer here. My last pregnancy I did a spin class the day before delivery and continued to lift weights two days before. I had to quit running at about 6-7 months bc he was crushing my ribs.

Still on my normal running maintenance plan. Distance runs up to 10. I'm not much slower right now but my HR is high. I just get it done early morning bc I'm more tired the day goes on.
  • @FraggleChic - Disney half is on my bucket list! Gonna wait till my son is old enough. He's 21/2
  • I'm a runner and can't stop! It's addicting! However I can't believe how much less energy I have which it makes it much harder.

Just make sure you are drinking TONS of water I have been drinking at least 100oz of water a day and that helps with the low energy levels.

Run but don't push it too hard!
You're body will tell you when you can push it and when enough is enough.
    Good luck!
  • I plan to continue my workout regiment during pregnancy :) I teach aerobics (high intensity boot camp), do Pilates and spin classes. Also run with my pooch! Hoping md will allow me to continue this because I really love it
  • Do you find that your progesterone dips after hard workouts? Mine is low to begin with...so I want to avoid another miscarriage.
  • How inspirational to see so many running moms here! I'm a runner as well. Once hubby found out about the zygote in my system, he flat out forbade me to run anymore. :)) At our first doctor visit a few days later she informed him it was safe for me to maintain whatever intensity I had pre-pregnancy. I've done two halfs in the last few months but he's nervous about me keeping my running schedule. We're registered to run a half that is now two weeks before our EDD so he might ultimately get his way but in the meantime, Mama is runnin' the skreets!!
  • I'm still running! I'm going to try to keep my mileage up but cut back on pace. No more intense speed workouts for this girl! It's my brother's first half and I'm running it with him!

The Disneyland Half (in September) is on my bucket list! It will probably happen next year since we'll be moving that way! :)
  • I'm not a hardcore, but regularly goes for circuit trainings and hiking. Since week 4, I have been having symptoms like lower abdominal pains, bloatiness and now full swing of morning sickness. I don't get much sleep because the sickness keeps me awake for half of the night.
I wonder if it is safe go to the gym and circuit classes. I hear it is beneficial to work out during pregnancy, but I'm a little afraid if I could hurt myself or the baby.

What? I have never even heard.of this.

  • I used to run 15-25 miles a week; but my doctor said not to get my heart rate above 140 and not to do anything high impact. So for cardio, now I'm doing the elipical and walking. I also do Pure Barre and yoga and they are very accommodating to pregnant women with modifications, etc. I miss my morning runs! But, it's not worth the risk. I'll get back at it next spring!
  • I run and lift. I plan to still work out. I plan to cut back on the miles and cut back the weight a bit. But if you normally workout it is so beneficial to keep working out! As much as your body will allow in moderation and the ok of your doc as well of course! I bought a book Fit & Healthy Pregnancy - how to stay strong and in shape for you and your baby by Kristina pinto. Has some great info on how much and when to cut back. Also a lot on the extra intake you need.

The HR thing is actually an old school of thought. As long as you were conditioned to do.it before pregnancy and you're not high risk, there's no reason to quit running. There are professional runners who continue to train their entire pregnancies!
