Supplies

I know we've had a million threads on supplies STM recommend to us FTM....... But it's been awhile. I have two specific questions....... Diaper genie? I'm getting mixed reviews on whether it's a necessity or not. My husband keeps saying we should get one because if not then those diapers will go straight to the garage and stink up his domain lol..... What do you guys use? Also my sis says there's another brand besides the diaper genie ?!

Also diaper bags..... I need to purchase one and have zero idea.

Re: Supplies

  • There is seriously like a 10 page thread on diaper bags. If I could have burned the internet I would have. If I could find it and post the link for you here, I would. Glad it will serve a better purpose than making me irrationally angry!

Deferring to the other ladies on the Diaper Genie. Was personally delighted to find a free one via a local FB group.

A few STM said that for apartment living, diaper genie is a must! I'm planning to buy it myself if no one gets it off of the registry. Other STM said that if you live in a house, it's not as necessary. I think your husband has a good point, if the garage is where he spends a good deal of time I totally get him not wanting the diapers to stink it up!

  • I think we picked Diaper Champ based on Lucies List review. However we did not get it at our shower so we will see if we will actually pony up the dough instead of just a normal garbage can...
  • Love my diaper genie. I just have one in his room so I don't use it all the time, but it definitely cuts down on the smells. For downstairs diaper changes I have a trash can outside I use for poopy diapers (and to empty my vacuum contents) and the kitchen trash for pee diapers. Target has a generic brand of bag refills, cheaper than the brand name. Just don't remove the plastic "ring" because the bags push through too fast.

As for a diaper bag, this time I'm opting for a back pack style vs a messenger style. It just works better IMO because it stays in place when you bend over, you can switch sides with baby quickly bc the bag won't be in the way, and the straps are better.
  • @hoodoll82 the money is exactly also why I'm wondering !....
  • I registered for the munchkin diper pail thing heard it was better then the diaper genie and at least where I live the refills are cheaper then the diaper genie ones. I have had several people with mixed reviews on to get one or not but I also live in a place the resale on baby items used is just a few dollars cheaper then buying new. So if I find I do not like it I can resale for almost the same price. Plus we are on the lazy side and I do not see my self wanting to throw the trash out multiple times a day. I also have doggie bags that I bought at the dollar store for a dollar for like 100 of them so I can use those on the go or as extra stench relief If the pail isn't very good. As for the diaper bag I am never out to long to need a big bag just for diapers and wipes I just bought me a new purse with a division in the center so half will be used for baby the other half for myself. Of couse I have old bags and backpacks around if I decide to drop LO off at someone's house or daycare I'll just use that instead of spending money on one. However with that in mind I still have a male diaper bag on my registry for my husband if someone buys it good if not no big loss.
  • I had a diaper genie for DD, and I do not want another. The smell just seems to linger. I think this time I'll get doggy bags and just immediately take them out. Yuck.
  • Tommie Tipie makes a diaper genie. It's 50.00 my husband want it. It individually wraps the diapers almost like a vacuum sealer.

  • We used diaper champ with my boys. We aren't using anything this time around and will just use grocery bags.
  • We got a diaper genie when my daughter was about 8 months old. Her shit didn't really stink until then. It works fine. I only use it for poop. I put the pee diapers in our kitchen garbage because we take it out every other day.

  • We had one when I lived with my niece. I honestly found it to be more hassle than it's worth. I also found the smell was worse.

I'm cloth diapering and have a diaper pail for in between washes, a lot of recommendations in that regard are to have a removable lid because they can smell less if they're actually getting oxygen versus being completely sealed. I imagine the same would hold true for disposables/air tight containers.
  • Diaper genie is a must! They do start to smell after a while and I am buying a new one for this baby... I don't think it's really a reuse kind if item but they are fairly inexpensive and they work great for what they need to do!
  • We used a genie with DD1 and didn't with DD2. We won't use one with DS either. We just use grocery bags.
  • I got myself a diaper genie. My sister said they're nice to have, not necessary, but nice to have. So I bought one. They didn't seem too expensive on amazon, I think it was like $35? Whatever it was, it fit in to my 'spend $50 every other week on baby stuff to prepare' budget

  • And the target brand refills totally work on the diaper genie (even though the brand has you think only their brand fits!)

Thanks for this info! One more reason to love Target :)
  • I believe Diaper Champ takes regular trash bags, another reason we are going with it...
  • I have been using a smaller, regular trash can with a flip-up lid and scented Ruffies trash bags. There is a smell if I let it sit for more than a few days, but I just bought some odor air freshener charcoal things from Norwex to put down under the bag. Love me some Norwex, so we'll see how this works!
And ya, there wasn't a stink until DD started eating more solids, around 6mo.
  • I have the Ubbi for DD. It's great at keeping the smell locked in. However, it's awful when you have to change the bag. It really only gets her first diaper of the day though. So, it's not changed often. Downstairs, I just use the regular garbage. There's no issues. I bought another Ubbi for this little guy. But I'm thinking of returning it and just going with one on the 2nd floor. DD will be potty training eventually.

  • My mom had a Diaper Genie for my little brother and that thing was a pain in the ass. It was constantly getting all tangled up and not working right, and after just a couple weeks it started to stink all on its own. Granted, this was years ago now, but I still don't trust them.
  • I am admitting I didn't read the other posts just wanted to suggest the ubbi diaper pail my STM sister suggested it because she new I wasn't huge on the specific bag deal with some of the others.
  • We used the arm and hammer baking soda one (munchkin maybe) I was able to squish a bunch of diapers in there and it really kept the smell out of the kitchen garbage can. The baking soda dispenser killed the smell. When you changed the bag it was gag worthy but that's only for a second and then we sent it outside lol
