Asking Dr. to leave work

I am currently 32 weeks with twins. Last week I seen a specialist that told me I needed to be placed on light duty for work because he was afraid I would go into labor (He did not want me on my feet for 8+ hours a day doing lifting and bending ect). Well today is my 1st day on light duty where I have to sit in a chair the entire time and answer phones for the most part. Sitting all day in a chair is the most uncomfortable thing on my back and really just everywhere. I feel like I either need to be standing or relaxing on a sofa in any position that isn't sitting upright. Well my question is, is it ok to ask your doctor to put you off work? I see her this Thursday but did not know if people actually ask for this. Thanks for the advice ladies and sorry for the long post!

Re: Asking Dr. to leave work

  • It is completely okay. I did a trial period of 2 weeks off to rest when I started getting migraines and it just never got any better so my dr and I spoke and decided it would be best to go on leave early. It's hard to back down from work and you kind of feel like a POS but you are not..... You probably need the rest my dear.

  • I'd make sure you're covered under short term disability if you go on leave early...otherwise you may lose some of your post-baby maternity leave time. For example I can only take 12 weeks fmla...and if I take some of that before the birth I then have to go back to work earlier afterwards. Also if you're not covered under disability you'd have to go unpaid for longer. Just make sure you know what you're getting into before you make any decisions!
  • I went out early at 37 weeks with my 1st. My job was physically and mentally exhausting, and I just couldn't do it anymore. My daughter didn't come until 41 weeks. I regretted SO much that I wasted 4 weeks of my FMLA before my daughter was born. This time I plan to stick it out until I go into labor. I want to make sure that I get to spend all my FMLA leave with my babies. It's just something to think about if you are in a situation with limited leave time.
  • Yeah, definitely find out what would happen with regards to your leave, but other than that I don't see a problem with asking your doctor to excuse you from work. I'd just hate for you to burn your leave and have less time after baby comes. Maybe you could sit on a ball (I known one of the other moms here does that and she says it helps) or put something underneath the desk to put your feet up?

  • I will be 34 w tomorrow. I have to turn in paperwork tomorrow for my leave. I talked to my doctor on Friday and asked her to write it for a couple of weeks before my due date. I work with special needs preschoolers. I am already very uncomfortable down low and the up and down from the floor and small chairs and chasing after them makes it worse. Walking down the hall to get their lunch from the cafeteria is so uncomfortable. I explained this to my doctor and she was very supportive. My last day is one month from today! Looking forward to ( hopefully) a week or two to relax before LO comes
  • Thanks for all the advice! I am covered for 12 weeks under FMLA and 12 weeks for short term disability but my short term disability is only as long as my doctor puts me off. Which I think is usually only 6 weeks for vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c section. Any of the time outside of short term disability I would have to make up with my other time I have saved (Vacation, personal, sick or comp). I'll see what my doctor says ThursdaY but atleast I know I won't be out of line asking that question.
Sitting down all day isn't as easy as you think, it's miserable lol!
  • I work for a disability insurer. When we get a claim for a normal pregnancy we have to ensure that the claimant medically and functionally cannot work rather than just doesn't want to. Can you get up during the day to stretch? Are you sitting with proper posture? Can you be standing while you answer phones if you find this more comfortable?
  • @shalana11 Yes I am using coerect posture and I can get up occasionally to walk around and stretch. It's just when I am sitting I have one baby who is about to fall out of me and the other one likes to but her butt in my ribs. The specialist I seen didn't want me to go to work but then like a crazy person I told him I would be able sit in an office area and not be on my feet all day, dumb me. Oh well I'll see what my doctor says this Thursday.
  • It just shows us that whether sitting or standing, we are all screwed! I can't imagine being on my feet all day - those of you in retail, the service industry or healthcare - I'm in awe. But then my job has me sitting in front of a computer all day and it's hell right now to sit for more than 2 hours at a time. I have to mark time for walks, or stretching on my office floor (hoping not to get weird looks). It's hard not to feel like a slacker when I'm taking breaks! Good luck to all of us in these last weeks!
  • It's a whole different ballgame with twins! I quit work around 26 weeks with my twin pregnancy. I was never put on bed rest but I took it easy. I carried my twins to 38w1d.

I am a critical care nurse and on my feet for 12 hour shifts other than a minute here or there to chart.  I've also had to find time to stretch and tend to lay a blanket down on our break room floor so I can lay flat and stretch my back during my lunch break (if I get one!).  My coworkers look at me like I'm crazy haha.  I agree it's hard not to feel like a slacker, but it gets to the point where I'm in so much pain I just can't take it, I don't care if they make fun of me! I wish I could go out of work a couple weeks early, but I would have to give that up out of my precious FMLA time and I think I'm willing to be uncomfortable a little longer to spend more time with my baby girl once she gets here.  I wish I had the option to take disability and still get my full 12 weeks of FMLA though!
