Will I be able to tell the sex looking at the ultrasound?

I'm a first time mama, 18 weeks and about to schedule my 20 week ultrasound. We plan to have the sex written down and give it to my mom to make a "gender reveal" cake. I'm just wondering if I'll be able to tell during the ultrasound if it's a biy or girl or if only an experienced tech/doctor can tell? I don't want to spoil the surprise by accidentally finding out.

Re: Will I be able to tell the sex looking at the ultrasound?

  • Sometimes, if baby is in a good position, it is fairly clear what it is, especially if it's a boy. Just tell the ultrasound tech that you don't want to find out the sex and to please let you know when s/he is looking in that area so you can close your eyes.

  • I can only speak for myself, but I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at when the tech was not narrating.
