sciatic nerve pain... already?

I've read that pregnancy can trigger sciatic nerve pain, but I definitely didn't think it would happen at 9.5 weeks.
I literally feel like I've been hit in the rear end with a baseball bat and even walking is painful. I went to a wedding yesterday and slow dancing with DH was excruciating. The pain shoots down my leg. Ouch.

Any moms have this with their pregnancies? Is there anything I can do about it? I was pretty athletic before getting pregnant and have one of those muscle rollers around the house. Do you think that would help?

Re: sciatic nerve pain... already?

  • I had it midway week 9 and it's getting better week 11. I was hobbling around like an old lady for awhile. My ob said it is more common in the second trimester but can happen in the first. She gave me a bunch of stretches which seem to have helped

  • Totally have this. I limp constantly. I was researching and I think mine is pelvic girdle pain. Very similar symptoms to siatica. It is caused by your hips relaxing from my understanding. Sucks all around
  • I am 11 weeks and 2 days and I've had it for the last week. Probably not as painful as yours but my left buttock and thigh ache pretty bad. My lower back does too a little. I see my doctor on the 28th and if it has not improved by then, I am going to ask if I can see a chiropractor for it. Hopefully, that might help a little. It does suck though, esp. on top of the nausea, fatigue, heartburn, cramps, and acne. Every week there is something new. Hang in there!

  • Thanks guys! If it hangs around too long I may ask my OB for a referral to a chiropractor.

Quick update: muscle roller was a bad idea. Only made it feel worse. It was hell crawling upstairs to bed. Haha. Don't do that if you're in my boat. Horrible no good very bad idea.
  • Had it with my first in first and third tri. A few people have posted about this if you search for it in this board
  • I really think this is what I've been experiencing. I'll be 11 weeks tomorrow and I am having lower back pain near joints and it radiates down to my backside. Only hurts when I walk a certain way. It's def not cramps and i have been searching to find a reason!
  • I found a support belt helped stabilize my hips; Serola was recommended to be by my PT
  • It's normal!! Prenatal yoga helped mine. :)
  • I'm 11 wks today and have had it last week but woke up today and could barley put my foot down. I'm a dance teacher too so I'm hoping I can work it out. Rolling on the muscles help sometimes if you have a roller. No fun!

  • There are a few posts about this already.

The only thing that helped me last time was a chiropractor.
I tried yoga and swimming with no relief. My allignment was all off from being pregnant. Getting weekly adjustments really helped.
  • Wow is that what this sudden pain in my left buttock was? I had no clue what was wrong with me. So mine hurts not as much when im walking, but when i shift positions like standjng up or sitting down or rolling around on bed. Everytime i make a sharp movement, a sharp pain shoots off in my left buttocks or sometimes i just get stuck in that position for a sec or two. I too feel like an old lady when this happens

That's it. I got to the point where I couldn't walk. A few visits to the chiro helped a lot.
  • I have a history of problems with my sciatic nerve on my right side so I assumed it would be a problem with pregnancy but was surprised to have it in the first trimester! I am 11 weeks 3 days and the pain started 4 days ago. I thought when the baby is bigger and putting pressure on the nerve is when it would be an issue. I read that certain stretches, yoga, heating pad, and/or massages can help along with seeing a chiropractor. I'm hoping mine will go away on its own soon ...
