Shooting pains in back

I am 36 weeks 3 days and have had the normal end of pregnancy stuff - lack of sleep, loose bowel movements, small bits of mucus plug coming out, Braxton hicks. Today I've had some consistent (but no pattern, not timeable) sharp pains that go from my abdomen to lower back. They last anywhere from a few seconds to about 30 seconds. They'll stop, come back sometimes the next hour, or I'll have two to three real close together. There seems to be no pattern to them, but they've been all day.

Maybe second time moms could help...is this baby's head just pressing down on my cervix or sciatica, or could this be a sign of early labor?

Thank you!

Re: Shooting pains in back

  • Sounds like back labor to me.... just got out of the hospital for some monitoring with symptoms of back pain as you describe. If they continue, I suggest you to call your doctor.

  • Thank you! I phoned my doula but usually when she's at a birth it takes a while for her to get back to me so hopefully I hear from
    Her soon!
  • Try to time them.... If they get close or intense... and let her know as soon as she gets back to you.
  • I did speak with her and we decided to see if they become timeable. They've all for the most part significantly slowed down but they aren't gone. If they don't stop by tomorrow I'll call the midwife just to get checked. This just made it all so much more real!!
