Home birth/Water birth

Is anyone doing a home birth or a water birth??? I considered a home birth but have recently decided I'd feel safer at the hospital, however I've decided to do a hospital water birth! Anyone had a water birth before? Did it ease the pain as much as it claims?

  • I'm jealous that you've found a hospital that will allow it! Mine has a labor tub but you're not allowed to deliver in it. My first choice was a birth center with a birthing tub but I risked out. Good luck and I hope your birth is wonderful!

  • I would have a home birth if I was allowed but I'm too "high risk". I'm allowed in the pool though - quite looking forward to it!

Our hospital started the water births in 2012, but they must be midwife attended as none of the doctors are interested in it, the only catch is that the only room available to accommodate the water birth is the Twin delivery room. Sooo basically if there are twins being delivered at the same time as I'm in labour, the twins get priority. So here's me hoping that I can have my water birth! They do however have tubs you can labour in as well, which I used for my first daughter.

The idea of a home birth sounds awesome to me but I just have an uneasy feeling about it as unfortunately my daughter needed nicu when she was born due to maconium in my water. I bet if that had not happened I would be all over it. I know I just need to be in a place where I feel safest in order for labour to go smoothly!

  • Those doing a water birth make sure you check into the guidelines your hospital has.  My friend wanted to have one but found out she was supposed to have some sort of shot or something so she couldn't.  Just cover all your bases to make sure you are prepared for it.  Talk it over with your doctor and make sure they know the plan too so they can help.

My friends case was something that was recently changed.
  • I was planning on it with my son but he had a heart decel at one point during labor so we were basically disqualified haha. My sister was able to and loved it ( no tearing and she thought it helped with the labor pains). I don't think I will do it this time but I love the idea. I did labor in the tub for a long time and found that helpful!

Me! The midwives are bringing the pool to my house! I am so excited. I bought all the towels, blankets, aroma therapies candles, music. I am so ready to rock this in the comfort of my own home!!!

I had a hospital waterbirth (VBAC) with my second. We were the first waterbirth at a big DC hospital. This time, we are having a home birth (I suppose it could be a waterbirth too). I've waited so long and I'm so exited to finally be doing this for my third.

I'm actually finishing my second year of midwifery school (to become a CPM). So I've seen lots of home births, just never done one myself.
  • Awesome! Enjoy the water birth @Hannah! Congrats on the midwife training @ryemo!
I had my first at home "unassisted", and hope to do the same with this one. I want my first to be involved with the birth- I think he'll be fascinated!

@babyboyhoward, I'm excited to have my kids involved, particularly my 6 year old. She was a CS and I think it'll be really healing for her to be a part of this. She told me she won't help if I throw up and she won't catch the baby.
  • Home birth after VBAC? Midwives are ok with that?
  • ryemoryemo member
Depends on the state and the midwife with VBACS, but generally, yes. Midwives are trained to recognize early signs of abnormalities including rupture and transport if needed. They also carry meds like pitocin and oxygen.

I've also had a VBAC before so my risk of rupture is slightly lower (though primary VBACs have a fairly low risk).
  • That is surprising. Although the risk is low- if rupture occurs you don't have time for transport to a hospital. More risk than I'd be willing to take. But I hope everything works out well!

We tried (started with) a water birth at the hospital with our midwife but finished delivery in the birthing stool. The tub helped a LOT. I def recommend it for anyone looking to deliver naturally, but also recommend to be squatting while you're in it.

There may not be time for transport, but there often is. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
