Any experience with prescription nausea meds?

Hi ladies,

I have been hit by the nausea train, and hit HARD. It started about four days ago, at 6w2d for me. It has been worse each day with a slight break yesterday. I haven't vomited but I am constantly on the brink. I'm constantly so nauseated 24/7 that I have to lay down and can't get anything done. Have been able to eat rice and toast but those sound less appealing each day. My question is for those of you who have been prescribed nausea meds for this kind of thing. What did you take, and did it give you much relief? I'm about to break down and call the doc as the thought of spending the next who-knows-how-many-weeks with the flu feeling sounds dreadful and makes me want to cry. Any input would be appreciated.

  • Zoferan is the most commonly used. With my first pregnancy I ate chocolate n that worked for me.

  • I posted about this a few times, but I had similar extreme nausea for about a week and a half and was getting to the point where I couldn't do fluids.
My doc prescribed Zofran and it really worked for me. I've been on it for 3 days now and am able to eat. Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the bland food train, but at least I'm eating and getting fluids!
  • My sister in law just told me they have come out with studies linking Zoefran to birth defects such as a cleft lip, something to look in to.

  • This is my second pregnancy, but with my daughter I was sick the entire 9 months. I had hyperemesis with her so there were many days I threw up 10+ times a day. It seems this pregnancy is following the same path. Ended up having home healthcare come out three times a week for meds and fluids. I was on zofran and phenergan primarily. Phenergan I could only take at night because it made me sleepy. Neither really worked well. My dr ended up having me take B6 and Unisom at night. It gave me slight relief, but women with typical morning sickness swear by it. Of course, run it by your dr first.
  • Zofran is listed as a pregnancy category class b medication and teratogenic effects have not been seen in animal studies. it is used frequently in pregnancy. There are therapies that can be tried first such as ginger, vitamin B 6 and some others. Hard to pull from the article on my phone but I can post them if you want to read.

    Info on zofran

    Pregnancy Risk Factor B

Pregnancy Implications Teratogenic effects were not observed in animal reproduction studies. Ondansetron readily crosses the human placenta in the first trimester of pregnancy and can be detected in fetal tissue (Siu, 2006). Based on available data, use is generally reserved for severe NVP (hyperemesis gravidarum) or when conventional treatments are not effective.

  • Thank you all for your input and info. I'll spend a bit of time looking into Zofran. Seeing the doctor on Monday so hope he will have some good recommendations.

  • I'm currently in rentanol as of this past week since I spent 3 of the days home from work throwing up and nauseous all day- it is working and I'm a functioning member of society again- I would ask! We have to suffer enough as it is, get help when you can!
  • I've decided that Diclectin is a gift from the gods! Feeling so much better after starting it this morning!

  • My ob gave me phenergan because it was one of the nausea meds I have taken in the past, but couldn't remember if it helped or not. Well, I take it and it usually puts me to sleep. My ob offered Zofran, which I am not against taking but I don't feel I am at that extreme yet. I can keep food down, I just throw up stomach acid some mornings and spend the day nauseated. I have found that sour candy helps and sometimes sea bands provide some relief.
  • During my last pregnancy my doctor put me on Zofran - I was vomitting after eating/drinking so wasn't able to hold anything down and needed to get iv fluids - I ended up having to take them for 32 weeks because the nausau/vomitting would just keep coming back each time I stopped taking them until that point.  Before that, I had tried everything else, the motion sickness bracelets, the sour candies, etc.. This pregnancy ginger lemonade seems to be working magic in the mornings.. I'm only 6 weeks along so I'm not convinced it's going to stay so mild yet..
