What birth control are you getting on?

My midwife has been talking about birth control since the day I left the hospital since they seem pretty adamant about spacing out your pregnancies. I've always taken the pill for my birth control. I ended on LoSeasonique a couple years ago and eventually decided to get off it completely since I felt like it was messing with my body. I was always bloated, tired, and achey. I was also scared it would mess with my ability to have a baby since I was approaching 30. Now that I have to consider birth control again, I just hate the idea of getting back on the pill.

I'm leaning towards the Mirena IUD since it seems to have a lot of benefits (no period, lasts 3 years or can be taken out). The whole concept just seems so strange to me though that the little T-shaped thing would just stay in place for so long! Has anyone else used this before, and what was your experience? Does it hurt when they put it in? What are you girls using for birth control?

  • I has the Implanon in my arm before I got pregnant and I loved it. I didn't have a period pretty much the whole 3 years I had it and I'd rather have something sitting in my arm for 3 years than my uterus. Insertion and removal wasn't painful at all. I got pregnant 2 weeks after having it removed. I will be getting it again

  • I had implanon prior to pregnancy and while it was good for the first year I had it removed early due to frequent yeast infections. Doc recommend mirena but I have to wrap my head around it making my uterus a "hostile environment". I'm between that and lo dose pills but with the pill I worry about remembering it at all let alone at the same time daily. Hubby is supposed to look into vasectomy

  • I had the mirena before this baby. It was a little uncomfortable getting it put in but not painful. Never had a problem with it and I had it for 4 years. It's actually good up to 5. Removal is super easy as well. I only had a period about every 3-4 months which was a little frustrating cause I could never predict when I would have one. I would definitely get one again and recommend it to my friends when they complain about their other forms of birth control.
  • Condoms for us! Worked for four years until we were ready for number 2. I react really bad to any birth control meds so ... It's our only options. Sucks but works like a champ and no side affects!
  • I had a Mirena for eight years (Replaced first one after five yrs) and loved it. Hurts to go in but then you're done. And I never had a period for the eight years I was on it. Got it removed and two weeks later was pregnant, but unfortunately that pregnancy was an ectopic. Got pregnant with this little one who was born 4/1 three months after being cleared from that.

I'm on the fence though since we'll want to try to get pregnant again in 18 months to two years. I hated the pill in college, but don't wanna get the mirena and then have it removed a yr later.

  • We are on the vasectomy train. No more babies for us!
  • After my last pregnancy I went on the IUD.  It wasn't ideal- I cramped for a few months and still felt the monthly period pains, but I think that was the best option for me.  This time around, DH is getting a V.

  • I had the copper IUD for 6 years. The doctor removed it when we were ready to get pregant. 10 days later I tested postive:) it did give me more painful heavy periods for the first few months but it was worth it. No hormones and no daily doses. We'll probably go that route again.
  • @Babykells3....good luck to your hubby with that!! My husband is having a horrible recovery :( hes 4 weeks post op.
  • I track my cycle and condoms. It worked for us for over 5 years! My body doesn't react well to the pill and I'm a big chicken when it comes to the thought of IUDs.
  • @jesslynnw90 you and me both!! Sounds like we do the same thing. :)
  • Thanks for the input ladies! I decided on the Mirena IUD and had it put in today. It really didn't hurt, just minor cramping. I guess we'll see how it goes from here.
