Baby Tub

Hi ladies! DH and I registered for a baby bath tub, and people have been telling me that I won't use it. Someone mentioned that it is easier when baby has spit up, pooped, etc to just bathe them quickly in the sink or on a foam pad in the bathtub. I've also heard that babies get cold quickly in the tub, so it is a hassle to bathe them there because they will get fussy. Now I'm not sure if we should just get something else. Anyone love/hate their experience with the baby tub? Will you be purchasing one for your baby? My logic is that all babies are different and some may hate them and some may love them but I have yet to come across a mom whose baby loved them and its making me second guess myself!

I was going to purchase one, but a friend showed me how she gave her baby a bath in the kitchen sink which I thought was easier on my back than the bathtub. Curious to see what works for everyone.

The whole tub thing was hard for me too. I did a lot of homework on trying to find the type that would work best for baby. I put one of the big sponge mats on my registry, so I can put him in the sink with that under him and hold him while I bathe him. Then for when he's a little bit bigger, I also put a summer infant tub with a sling inside. My best friend has one for her daughter and absolutely loves it and started using that for her around 1 month.

You can't wash a baby in a tub or submerse them in water until the cord falls off. It's basically sponge bathes a few times a week until that happens. After that tubs are fine. I'm a FTM and DH and I did register for one.

We used our tub with DS for probably at least a year (I forget exactly when we stopped and started using the regular tub). We would fill it up and put it on a towel on the counter in the kitchen - we were right there with him from the second he went in until the second he came out, so there was no risk of him falling off the counter. I know you can use the sink, but for me this was easier. Plus, kitchen sinks are honestly very germ filled and dirty, so if you use that you would probably need to clean it REALLY good before every single bath, and as a new mom, that just wasn't in the cards/energy level for me. I also was paranoid about the drain cover coming off and his little foot going down into the disposal (I know realistically this wouldn't have happened, but come on, we all have our weird things we worry about). I personally say get the tub - they don't cost a ton of money anyway, so if you don't get a ton of use out of it this time around, maybe you will next or you can just give it to a friend. Plus DS loved to sit in it when it was empty on the floor and push it around - so it doubled as a toy!

We used a baby tub for about 7 months with our son. Then we moved to the bigger bathtub, he never was bathed in the kitchen sink. Infant tubs are not expensive (well most of them anyway) you really don't need a fancy baby one. Check out the primo euro bath- it's only $25 and it will last you a good 2 years.

I used a sponge from the store in the shape of a duck or bear (they cost 4.99-6.99)for the first few weeks, and then used the baby tub, the baby can't sit up and tub helps. I also purchased a heater for my son when it was cold in our bathroom and that helped. The sink is ok when they can sit up but that's not for awhile.

Kitchen sinks are so dirty, I just can't wash a baby there. Fisher Price Whale tub worked like a charm for DD and we used the heck out of it up to 8 months or so when she was sitting and crawling reliably and we moved on to just a bit of water in the big tub. The whale tub was around $20, came with a toy and a removable infant seat. It fits over a sink, but we preferred to just set it in the bath. DD hated being naked as a newborn so we covered her with a washcloth, since this style doesn't really submerge them fully. I felt I had very good control of her and it made bath time easy.

I have used a baby tub for my DD and I found it very convenient. I would place it on our kitchen table when I was giving her a bath it worked out great that way. I was able to dress and undress her on one half and on the other half I had a towel set down with the tub on top. I stayed with her the whole time she was taking a bath so it wasn't a problem. As she grew I still used it, but started placing it on the floor as she got more active to keep bathing as safe as possible for her.

We used a cheap one that had the removable newborn sling thing till DD was wanting more room for her toys, then we switched to just putting her in a laundry basket in the tub till she was a little steadier, then just the tub. I agree with above poster about kitchen sinks being really germ filled. No matter how much I clean the sink, after I've had raw chicken, beef, pork etc.. in it, I don't want my daughter's naked butt soaking in it and her taking the inevitable mouthfuls of water out of it. We used a little space heater also in the early months for warmth in the bathroom and my daughter has always loved her baths.

I would get one! I used mine for at least the first 8 months if not longer. A squirmy baby in just a sink or tub gets difficult.

DS loved the tub. And so did we- easy on the back- no need to clean the sink before each bath (which in our case is every day)- even when we stopped using the tub on the counter we put it in the big bath tub and he still sat in it with a lot more water and he splashed and played happily.

We used one of the ones with a sling and then a bump inside to prop her up and it was awesome. I loved it. Getting another one for this baby.

Little man is 8 months (Au14 here) and we just gave his up the other day. He loved it and I miss it, it's hard bending into our big tub to bathe him! The newborn slings are awesome in the beginning.

I used the baby bath tub for my son until about 8 or 9 mths. Then we switched to the bath ring which I loved!!!!

I am also grossed out by kitchen sink bathing. with #1 I used the baby tub for 8-9 months. #2 only used it 5-6 months because the minute he could sit up, I put him in a bath ring in the big tub with his older sister.

We used a tub for the first 7-8 months- maybe longer.

I also registered for one of those puji things you put in the sink. BIGGEST waste ever! I used it once and that was it. Maybe I'll figure it out with this new baby but I wouldn't recommend it!

damn! maybe I should change it back to the whale tub. I went back and fourth with that one and the summer one with the sling only because it looked much more comfy for the baby to be supported in the sling. but now im second guessing. lol. Too many choices. My mom cracks me up. when I was browsing online through all the tubs she said(in her jersey city accent) "Ah fa crissake! Yea's ago they had one choice...tha damn sink! and everyone turned out fine! I don't envy you girls at all nowadays!"

I've loved having a baby bath tub. I didn't start using it much until we got to 4-5 months. I still use it as I don't have to fill it up as much as the regular bathtub.

This is the tub we have. I love it and used it for about 7 months. I only took him out because he was making a mess splashing that was easier to clean in the big tub. He would still fit now at 20mo though. I will use it again for DD.

We have a Primo that we used for DD and DS and will be using for #3. Our babies LOVED it and were much happier in it than in the big tub or the sink. They're so EASY to use and you don't have to hang on to your baby all the time. One of the BEST baby shower gifts we received!! No need for the sling, mats, or sponges...and you can put it up on the counter to save your back. They have tubes for easy drainage.

I haven't personally used one but I know many people that have and really like it. People do say that it makes it easier to bathe in the sink and then you can throw them right in the dryer to dry them out and store them. I put it on my registry and will purchase it for myself. I think it makes a lot of sense for people that don't have a lot of room in their house for a baby tub and I haven't heard a bad thing about them!

I found it better to bath with my son or shower. Or to have DH bath with him. Baby only need a bath once a week so it's a great way for Daddy or mommy to bond. Plus baby is slippery when wet so being in the tub is way easier the leaning over the tub.

I agree with PP. Since they are so slippery it was hard for me to hold them in the tub and have a free hand to fill a cup with water and another to wash them. We just got in the bath with him every 3-5 days or so. It became a fun time for both of us and now he is OBSESSED with water.

I loved our baby bath tub. it was a pink tub with a sling inside.

my DD is 3 and still likes to have the sling put in the big bathtub so she can lean back easily and have her hair washed. we loved it and wouldn't have it any other way. I wouldn't put her in the sink where we would use harsher chemicals to scour it clean. Harsher chemicals can leave residue and harm a babies butt/vagina. Plus we usually had dishes in the sink and I didn't want to mess with that. Giving her a bath with the lavender scented baby bath (sleepy baby) then a lotion rub down with the same sleepy baby brand helped us establish a bed time routine that helped her learn to go to sleep really easy. I intend to do exactly the same with the DD :-)

I just bought a gently used one with the infant sling on Cragslist for $10. I read reviews of it online before and most everyone loved it.
