Csection scheduled for tomorrow.

I was really hoping for a Vbac and have been doing everything I can, tons of walking using my pump to try to stimulate contractions but I've been at 1 cm 80% effaced for 3 weeks. And they couldn't do my membrane sweep b/c his head is so low and my cervix is posterior. So unless I'm dialated to at least 3cm tomorrow when I go in I'm stuck with the csection.

I'm really worried about it b/c I have a 17 month old and after the first 2 weeks I will be home alone with both of them during the day and I'm not sure how we will deal if I can't lift my toddler. Hopefully it won't be an issue but I'm really nervous.

  • You will do great! Recovery from a scheduled c-section is way, way, way better than one after laboring. And while I'm not knocking VBACs, just keep in mind it's not a guarantee that it will work. I was pretty much 100% by 2 weeks after delivery, and didn't have any help past then.

Some tips for helping your toddler:
    1. Use a step stool to help them in and out of the tub, bed, car, & high chair/booster.
    2. Do you have a detachable shower head? I used that for bathing, so I didn't have to bend as much.
    3. Have a lot of sit down activities on hand. Then you won't have as much risk of them falling & needing picked up.

    Good Luck!

  • If you don't mind me asking, why did you get a c section with your first baby? If it was a risk factor for the baby (ie intolerant to contractions or breech) than you may still be a good candidate for a VBAC. I went into my scheduled c section with 0 cm dilated and not effaced. The doctor who was going to perform the surgery encouraged me to try for a VBAC. She inserted a folley bulb/catheter in my cervix. It was to mechanically open my cervix. It ended up breaking my water so they took it out but it resulted in a successful VBAC (With some pitocin). I had a super supportive L&D team and it was the main reason it worked.
Just sharing my story. Good luck in whatever option works for you!

  • @erikaluna01 I had a c section with my daughter 17 years ago due to frank breech presentation and then did a vbac with my son 4 and 1/2 years ago but I had to go into labor naturally or my doc was prepared to do a RCS. I am going in Saturday for induction to try vbac again, my cervix is 1cm and 50%. Thank you for sharing your experience because my doc is recommending the foley and pitocin to get labor going. It makes me feel good reading about your successful labor and delivery!
  • Good luck @RSupry. I hope your recovery will
be speedy. FWIW several of my friends have gone the RCS route voluntarily for various reasons and their recoveries went really well. I hope the same for you!
  • With my first his heart rate was not responding to the Braxton hicks contractions like they wanted. It wasn't decelerating just remaining steady. Looking back at it I feel like I was rushed into a uneccessary csection but since it was late and my nerves were fried when they told me that something might be wrong as a ftm I just didn't know enough to slow things down and say let's wait. He was perfectly healthy with zero problems when he came out so looking back I should have had the option to wait.

This time my doctor won't use pitocin b/c of the increased risk for uterine rupture but if I'm dialated to 3 cm when I go in shortly they will break my water for me to give me a chance to Vbac. The Foley catheter hasn't been mentioned, possibly b/c my cervix has been difficult to reach since it is posterior and his head is so low in my pelvis. But I'll be sure to ask about it.

Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement!
  • I just had my first baby (a boy!) on the 9th because of preeclampsia. Doctors tried inducing me but I stopped dilating at 1.5 cm. I had a c section and it's really not that bad. I thought it would be a lot worse. I'm only 17 and I handled it. You can too. The first few days were rough I'll admit. Keeping you in my prayers.
