2nd Trimester

Pregnancy and Allergies

Ladies I need some help. I've always had awful seasonal congestion. I usually take Claritin D and Afrin Nasal spray on REALLY bad nights only. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. My doctor has told me to not use Claritin D and avoid nasal sprays altogether. Currently I am taking just Claritin and I am completely miserable. I don't think my doctor was completely aware of just how bad these allergies are.

Any solutions for relief out there?

Re: Pregnancy and Allergies

  • Some allergies are worse during pregancy I know that's how it is with me. I even gained allergies to stuff I never had reactions to. Best thing I can tell you is I'm taking zertec seems to work a little bit doesn't clear everything also on terrible reactions taking benadryl. maybe try a different brand since you have gotten pregnant your body has changed and I have noticed some allergy medicine works better then others. Zertec never worked for me before but seems to be doing okay now. Just clear everything you take with your doctor and remember no medication is going to be completely safe to take during pregnancy you just have to weigh your options.

  • My seasonal allergies are horrible when pregnant.  They were terrible with my son, and now terrible with this pregnancy.  I take Claritin only when it's really bad.   Claritin is like putting a Band-Aid on a gun shot wound, why bother?  So I only take it when it's really bad, usually before bed.  Neti pot and saline spray all the time, they're perfectly safe.

My OB told me nothing with the "D", not Claritin D, Zyrtec D, Allegra D - so I just deal with it.  The way I look at it, I've got 15 weeks to go with my pregnancy, and allergy season won't last that long, I can suck it up until then

  • I've been using a humidifier at night, regular Claratin, and cold washcloths on my forehead. That being said, mine have been worse than normal and I spent Wednesday on the couch due to them.
  • Before I was pregnant with my now 2 year old, I was going to an allergy specialist. When I found out I was pregnant, the doctor did his research and found that Zyrtec had the less effect on the fetus than the medicine I was taking (Allegra d). He said that he felt the most comfortable with me taking Zyrtec and continuing allergy shots as if I just started them weekly until the baby was born. After I had my 2 year old my allergies went away completely. Every time I met with the Doctor and not a nurse, he double checked ALL the medicines I was given by any of my doctors and made sure they were ok to take while breast feeding.  This time, (I'm 27 weeks now), I have really bad allergies. I'm still taking Zyrtec and it helps a little.

I suggest like pp said, use a netti pot and saline spray to help.
