Dr. Giving Gender Prediciton During Ultrasound - Opinions!

Happy Thursday everyone! I went for my NT ultrasound and blood-work yesterday and during our ultrasound, the Dr. told us she had a prediction on what our baby's gender is that was more than 50% confident. Immediately I thought to myself...it must be a boy (we told her we'd rather her not share her prediction with us since it wasn't 90%+ sure)!

I'll be 13 weeks tomorrow, so yesterday I was 12w5d. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that her having a prediction this early means that it is a boy? I realize that it could go either way (50/50 always!), but if she felt confident, would it only make sense that she thinks boy?

We'll be finding out for sure at our 20 week ultrasound, but I'm so antsy to know now...would love your thoughts!

Re: Dr. Giving Gender Prediciton During Ultrasound - Opinions!

  • At my NT scan (12w1d) the doctor asked if we were going to find out the sex, and made it seem like he had a guess. We don't want to to find out, so we said no. But I thought the same thing you did... if he had a guess that early, it must be a boy. I asked my OB about it later (different doctor) and she said that that early, the sex organs are pretty indistinguishable. Maybe after looking at them every day, they start to pick up early differences, but I think it's still too early to tell.

  • My doctor did the same at 12w5d... made a guess, then followed it with but I wouldn't go tell anyone or purchase anything big until the next ultrasound. No reason not to have a guess. AND, it made my hubby happy :-)
  • So @ELParker814 -- was your Dr.'s guess a girl or a boy, if you don't mind me asking?
  • @acs2015-  she guessed boy. It was pretty clear to us too... They got a shot during the ultrasound of the bum area and you could clearly see two legs and a little thing sticking out the middle. She looked at us and said "Well, that is more than likely a peepee"...
  • Could be girl or boy. Girls can have very prominent  areas at that point too. My dr guessed at 10weeks 3 days girl. And he was right. Should have asked!! It will drive you crazy now lol

  • I know, @ohjaime ! What in the world was I thinking? I have another appointment with my regular doctor on May 4th...so maybe she'll do an ultrasound and have a guess! I'll probably have her tell me her thoughts! :)
  • My tech took a guess too and told us boy.  I was 12w3d at the time.  Boys and girls can be pretty much the same at that point so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.  She might very well have been right but I'll wait for more confirmation.  If you google online, you will see that the sex organ for both boys and girls at that stage stick out like a peepee and the nub theory has been debunked so...who knows!

Is your dr pretty cool? Could you call him and say... I'm curious now what your guess was? mine would tell me if I called later.

  • Same thing happened to me! 9 wk, 1day US, my doctor said.. looks like a little penis!!! She did ask us if we were finding out before she made that comment.. but I'm kind of bummed she did. Husband and I are going to have her put the gender in an envelope and open it at home... but we both can't help but think we already know it's a boy.

@Knottie03036745 this is exactly what I was thinking! If they claim they "already have a guess" I would just assume that means they think it's a boy (since it's still too early, and I feel like seeing the development of boy parts is easier than girl parts)....we are also planning on being surprised (envelope and opening later) so I'm kinda wondering if the cat is already out of the bag. :(
  • Our ultrasound tech asked if we wanted to know and then said she thinks it's a girl at our 12 week ultrasound. There were 3 white lines which she said means girl. With my son's 12 week ultrasound the tech guessed boy based on what she saw and she was right!!

I just want to say, it is
really still too early to see a penis at this point.  Being that the sex organs look almost the same this early on, perhaps the doctor/tech is so experienced at reading sonograms they can tell from something else whether it is boy/girl.  Don't assume right off the bat that because they're saying they have a guess means it's a boy!  They could be really good at reading sonos and could see signs of a girl!  it could really go either way ;)

  • For what it's worth our tech said she thought girl. Baby was sitting spread eagle the whole time giving us a pretty good shot. Like others have said we are taking it with a grain of salt as it's still so early.

With my son (18 years ago!) I went in for my ultrasound and we were looking at the screen and all of a sudden the tech went "Oh - well I hope you wanted to find out it's a boy!" We were both staring at what was undeniably a boy. It was just the way he was laying you couldn't avoid it. lol

This time around since I'm over 35 I had the genetic testing done and got to find out that way!
  • So my Perinatologist showed me how at this stage (12.4 at the time) that all you can see is the line from the "sex organ" and showed us how if it points straight forward it's likely a girl and if it has an angle slightly upward its usually a boy. He showed us exactly the line in one shot they had and it pointed slightly upward. So he guessed boy and he was right. I already had my panorama results. I just wanted him to show us his skills. :)
  • I know SOOOO many people who have had gender determinations or "guesses" during their 11-14 week NT scan and EVERYONE I know in my area has always had the right gender "guessed." I know at this stage it is not 100% (and I have read online about some being wrong) but it does seem to be a very high rate of accuracy if you get a good doctor or US tech. Also, over half the people I know had girls and the tech/Dr guessed girl that early...so just because they think they saw gender this early does not automatically mean boy.

My BFF is 5 weeks ahead of me and she had her scan at 12w5d and was told it was a girl. She has had two other US including one this week at 17w3d and all have confirmed girl! :-). I also had another coworker who was told she was having a girl at 12w and she has the most beautiful little 1yo princess now. :-)

    Finally pregnant with #2!

    EDD: 10/24/2015
  • We had our NT scan done yesterday, and our ultrasound tech told us she had a guess, but wanted to see what the dr thought. Both the doctor and US tech agreed it looks like we're having a girl, but told us he was 80/20 on the guess and to hold off on buying anything till we get the for sure from him next time!
  • Today I had my NT scan done and they guessed its a boy. I was very happy. Now I have to wait for the confirmation in some weeks. Im 13w5d
  • I found this pic from when I was pregnant with my son.... 13w5d at the time

    Just thought it was interesting!
  • I had my NT scan at 12w6d and the guess was boy. She said because it was extending upward and not horizontally usually means boy. She checked 3 different times. But she told me not to buy anything just yet!

  • My sister was given a guess this early in a pregnancy from the tech who said they thought it was a boy... Well a few weeks later when they did the next ultrasound and actually could tell the sex it was a little girl. It's always fun to hear their guesses, just don't run out and buy everything until they have better than a 50% guess ;)

    Mine predicted boy at 12 w 5 d he said he was 85% sure...well at 20 w found out its a girl!!
  • We did the blood test for genetics and had already found out it's a girl at 10 weeks, but the tech looked at 14w2d too and she said...well, the test is never wrong and it still isn't- it's definitely a girl! She was even able to point out the labia to us- crazy, huh? Sounds like I'm a little further along than you but she said it would have even easy for her to spot boy or girl at that point. So I wouldn't necessarily be sure that the surprise has been ruined and it's a boy for sure....I bet it could be either! Hope you can find out soon! It's fun to know :)
  • I found out the gender of 2 previous pregnancies around 12 weeks at the NT scan...they were both pretty confident both times....and both times correct! First was a girl, second a boy:)  If they know what they are looking at (and most of them have been doing this forever, they're pretty skilled) they know. Some just won't tell you bc it isn't the professional thing to do.
  • When I was preggo with my son at 20 weeks my doctor used a crappy US and guessed girl. We did the good US a week later and he was OBVIOUSLY a boy. So I wouldn't write off what the doc says this early as fact, but kinda fun to have a guess.

  • Oh and I want to add, my friend just went and had an early ultrasound done at one of those boutiques and they told her one boy and one girl for her twins. She had a gender reveal party and everything. Fastforward 2 weeks and she went to her ob for a regular appt and they did an ultrasound and said they were 90% sure it was 2 boys... So there's that as well with early guesses.
