Stripping membranes?

I am 37 & 1/2 weeks pregnant, today at my doctors app. He offered to strip my membranes next week (I'll be 38 & 1/2 weeks then) also he is checking then to see if I've dilated at all.. My question is, is it a good idea? Has anyone else been successful into having an early labour after having this done? And also, should I wait longer? I'm guessing maybe he wants this done soon because I am 5'2 and really tiny, perhaps this will prevent a cesarean? I'm just confused a little as to what exactly I should do and if anyone else has been in this position. I appreciate your replies!

Re: Stripping membranes?

  • I got it done when I was overdue and an hour later I was contracting and I went into labour that night. If you aren't dialated there's no point in doing it from

  • See, I'm not sure why my doctor even offered it to me. I know that I have an irregular case of hydronyphrosis (not sure if the spelling is correct) and its almost completely blocking my right kidney. I'm wondering if that's maybe why he offered to do it so soon? I'm going to ask anyways next week, and also I find out if I'm dilating at all next week as well. Thank you for your reply tho!
  • My doc did this last time starting at 38 weeks. I had it done 3 times before I went into labor. Everyone is different.

  • From my understanding from my midwife stripping of membranes is only going to help induce labor if your body is ready. Otherwise, it really won't make a difference

I've seen plenty of people for whom it did nothing and some that it got things started. It's one of those things that if you are close to going into labor anyway, it might be the thing that tips the scale, but otherwise it's pointless.

I'm generally in the camp of 'the baby should come when it's ready and your body knows what it's doing here', and personally wouldn't do it unless I was already well overdue.
