How far away should you go 9 mos pregnant?

Hi ladies:

My Mom invited us to a birthday dinner this Saturday night. She lives an hour away and I will be 39 weeks, 6 days pregnant!

I told her we'd see if Little One has arrived by then. But if I haven't had the baby, should I still say no? I am trying to find any official guidelines about how far away from the hospital you are ok to travel at this point. And I will ask the OB on Friday, too.

Thanks in advance- and yes, I'm the one who asked this exact same question about driving 2 hours away at 38 weeks for Easter dinner. I'm so sorry. We ended up doing it and it was uneventful. I didn't know if get another family invite at 39 w 6 d and I feel like it's worth checking back in with you!

Thanks and by the way, hope you are all feeling well today.

  • I think an hour away is plenty of time to get to the hospital, but that is what I would wanna do. If you don't wanna go or feel uncomfortable just say no that your dr advised against it. Nothing wrong w that either.

  • I live 30 minutes from the hospital so I would say an hour away wouldn't be too bad. I would just start heading home before 5-1-1 if possible. That being said I personally wouldn't go but that is because I don't want my family knowing I'm in labor until I've been admitted to the hospital (my family lives 2 hrs away). I know that I can't handle them being around during my labor. I'm already fed up with the daily texts asking if he has kicked his way out yet.
  • If you go and you end up going into labour while you're there, you might want to start heading home at more like 10-1-1 than 5-1-1. The hospital I'm delivering at has a lot of rural moms who live an hour or more away and that's what point they suggest coming in at if you're more than 30 minutes away so that might be a good guideline. I personally wouldn't go because I would hate to sit in a car that long, but as always if you've talked with your doctor about it and you're comfortable with it obviously it's your call.

    Anniversary

  • I went to a wedding yesterday at 39+5... It was 2.5 hours away.. The drive wasn't great but it wasn't awful.. My OB said to me "they have hospitals in Melbourne... If by crazy chance you suddenly go into labour - even though you've had no symptoms at all of labour, go to the hospital and go from there..."

This is Australia.. The U.S. Might be diff but if you're feeling okay id go... It was good to get my mind off the fact baby wasn't here yet for a bit!
  • Our hospital is 50 minutes away, so I would travel an hour.
  • I'm going to a wedding that my husband is in 8 hours away, 10 days before my due date. There are lots of people who drive an hour to get to their home hospital but at the end of the day, there are hospitals everywhere!
  • Our hospital is an hour away from our house so I'd say go for it. An hour away is totally doable if you go into labor.
  • Yeah our hospital is a good 45 mins away, I wouldn't worry about an hour.
  • Thanks! I'm only 10 mins from the hospital living in the city so going an hour away felt daunting to me. I didn't think about how normal it is to live further away!
