Calcification on heart?

Hey everyone! We went to our 17 week ultrasound yesterday and the doctor said that there was a small calcification on the baby's heart that puts him/her at a higher risk for Down's syndrome. It is a soft marker so not indicative of a diagnosis but it still scares me a little. The head and neck measurements were all normal but we didn't do any blood tests because we didn't want to know either way. She also said it's common in people of asian/indian decent (I'm indian) but doesn't usually present as Down's when the baby is born. I know I shouldn't worry, but I'm still uneasy about it!!

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Re: Calcification on heart?

  • I had the same thing and his bones also measured small. I did an amnio and everything came back normal. My maternal fetal medicine doctor said that its nothing to worry about.

  • I had that happen with my first. From what I read, if you don't have any other indicators of Downs, then the calcification is a non-issue. They just find that if a child has most of the other indicators, they are most likely going to have the calcification. For us by the 24-week US the spot had shrunk, and as expected, he was born without DS.
  • My doctor just found this today! It is called EIF. My doctor said that it happens sometimes and is almost always nothing, not to worry about it at all. So I decided I will not worry about this! He said usually it disappears by the next ultrasound, but that they are so not worried they probably won't even look for it anyways.

Everything else in my anatomy scan was absolutely perfect.
  • I personally wouldn't be able to deal with the question. I would get the DNA blood test to confirm.
  • Sorry you are going through this stress! I had the same thing happen last pregnancy, and I have a perfectly happy healthy normal baby boy! It is very common, and really means nothing. Stay positive and you are good to go :-)

My doctor said there really was no need for any of this testing. He said without other markers the risk is almost non-existent.
  • I didn't get blood work either because it doesn't matter until it does. I'm with yoh, although I still have some worry of something being wrong but I'm sure everything is fine!
  • Thanks everyone so much! It makes me feel a lot better. I'm still glad I decided against the blood work. Finding out isn't going to change anything and just make me stress more. I'm hoping to enjoy the pregnancy as much as I can and be calm about it! Prayers for everyone for healthy babies!!
  • I'm glad you are feeling a bit better! I hope more women chime in with first hand experience.
