I want my happy baby back

For the first two weeks my baby boy was so content and happy, would lay awake and look around, sit in his swing or bouncy chair, etc. The past few days I can't get him to nap more than a couple minutes or be calm unless he's attached to my breast. I can't eat, get a glass of water, basically can't leave my chair because he screams when off for more than a couple minutes. I'd like to pump some to get ahead for when I go back to work in a few weeks or just to take a couple hours away but it's impossible. Only getting an ounce shortly after he falls asleep and can get up to 3 after he eats and falls asleep in the morning when I'm fuller. Is this attachment nursing or is he unable to get enough at once? He certainly wets and soils enough diapers but I'm not sure how to get longer intervals of contentment in between. Sorry So long, first time mom

Re: I want my happy baby back

  • Growth spurt? My girl did the same thing. And she gained 10 oz that third week.

  • Growth spurt. Just keep feeding him and once the spurt is over, he will be back to normal.

Thanks, I had considered growth spurt but thought it was too early since he's only two weeks but every baby is different. How long do they typically last? As much as he is on the breast I've been expecting to see my supply increase but haven't noticed anything
  • @KD32412 @mrssaubo Do they experience this at 4-5 weeks also? My baby is doing the same thing. He won't sleep, he fusses constantly unless he's on my boobs. God forbid I try to put him in his bassinet. I feel drained dry, not to mention I can't even get up to get a drink or go pee or have a snack. I'm basically confined to my chair. He wasn't like this at all last week or the week before. I'm so confused and frustrated and exhausted.
  • My daughter is pretty much fussy if she's not sleeping or eating. She's 5 weeks. I brought it up at her 1 month doctors appointment and the dr said 4-6 weeks is the toughest for fussiness! Crossing my fingers it passes soon!
  • @soxgurl Oh boy...I hope this passes quickly. I'm not sure what to do because just like your baby, mine is basically fussy if he's not sleeping or eating. And if he's sleeping, he's waking himself up by moving his arms and legs furiously. I'll ask at his one month appointment Friday just to be sure.
  • @SharLovesAlex Growth spurts usually occur between 4-6 weeks, the constant breastfeeding helps ramp up your milk supply. My LO gained 2 lbs in 2 weeks! Yours is doing exactly as he should. Feed on demand, your body and baby know what to do. Good luck!
  • @KD32412 Thanks, I'm hoping that once this is over, he'll be my happy, sleepy, hungry little guy and this fussy baby will go bye bye!
  • He must just be going through a growth spurt! Hang in there! This too shall pass. Mine went through this. Just remember they someday grow up and appreciate their dependence on you for now. I keep telling myself this when I haven't been able to shower, or leave the rocking chair for hours, or have got up for the 15th time in the night. You'll have your happy baby back in no time :-)
  • Mine did this too at 3 weeks. I was researching everything thinking there had to be an answer (reflux, colic). It's looking like it was a growth spurt as he's gained a good amount of weight in just a couple days. For us, it passed quickly. He slept all weekend, Monday and Tuesday were rough and Wednesday and Thursday he was content! Hoping it lasts.,, good luck!
  • Mine is 5 weeks, and this happened to us at ten days, two weeks, and again right around 4 weeks. I had a full on meltdown after being completely exhausted and fed up with the feeling of being confined to a chair/my bed. I'm hoping it's all just growth spurts, but since 4 weeks he's been so much fussier in the evenings!
  • I want my happy baby boy back too! I could have written your post-I'm in the exact same situation.
He's 5 weeks now and about 3 weeks ago he started crying - having complete meltdowns that only stop when I nurse him. He stays on the breast until he falls asleep, sometimes for an hour or more. If I try to take him off and he isn't in a deep enough sleep, he cries until he is back on. My nipples are so incredibly sore.
I've seen my pediatrician and a lactation consultant about it and was told that if they are gaining weight normally and having enough wet and dirty diapers, it's comfort nursing. The pediatrician thought it might be reflux or a dairy allergy but we've ruled that out. The lactation consultant thought that a forceful letdown might be causing some of the problem (he also spits up a large amount and seems gassy). Often an imbalance of foremilk and hindmilk result with this. Maybe look into that if your LO is having any other symptoms besides the crying.
My pediatrician said that it was good he was comforted by nursing - some babies can't even calm by breastfeeding.
    Good luck!
  • I don't have anything new to add, but mine will be six weeks tomorrow and I'm going through the exact same thing ! I've seen pediatrician and been reading about it. It's normal , but this too shall pass :)
  • I started taking fenugreek yesterday so I'm hopeful it will help up my supply because it's definitely worse in the evening when I'm drained. I can tell by the sound and his calmness that he gets more milk in the morning and less throughout the day. We see the doctor today so I can make sure his weight gain is on track at least but I really wanna be able to pump something more than an ounce so I can start freezing some before I return to work. Lo is 3 weeks tomorrow
