Mini Crib vs. Full Size Crib

My husband and I have just started crib shopping. The nursery is a medium size room but we are looking to use space and money efficiently. What are the pros and cons of choosing a mini crib, traditional crib or convertible crib? There are so many choices and things to consider!

Re: Mini Crib vs. Full Size Crib

  • We use a co-sleeper and a crib. I was so tempted to get a mini-crib this time around. The main factor that made us stick with the normal size crib is that after we have the next child the crib will then be turned into a toddler bed; the mini cribs make ultra tiny toddler beds. Good luck and happy shopping!

  • Ok, so here's what we've done with kid #4 and what we'll also do with kid #5: we didn't buy a traditional crib, just a pack & play.  The biggest perk of doing this is that when you have to travel somewhere, your kid will actually sleep relatively normally because you'll easily be able to bring their bed with you.  Best decision ever (so far).  Otherwise, travelling sucks because your kid won't sleep.

We have a convertible that the girls will share when they're old enough. Downside is that DD1 is a baby Godzilla and has chewed parts of the crib that convert, but whatever! Lol ours converts into a toddler bed and eventually a full sized bed.
  • We have used the same convertible crib for our first two and will again for this one. We have never converted it though. IMO toddler beds are not worth dealing with, both kids went straight to a twin bed. And really, I don't see using it as the full size headboard it could be used as so for us, the convertible option wasn't necessary. The crib was very inexpensive though so I'm not kicking myself.
  • I've been wondering that too, how often does the crib make it to converted bed? I like the rails on a toddler bed for safety but my DD is a wind mill sleeping. Our first crib was hand me down that we chucked in a move so I didn't get to see how long it would have lasted. It was definitely showing some wear.
  • I got a mini crib for my second child. But it really didn't matter what bed I got because he never slept in his own bed (yea I know). I liked the mini because of the size and it just looks better than a pack and play. It was the perfect size that would fit in our bedroom and the small nursery.

  • I loved our mini crib!  https://www.target.com/p/davinci-annabelle-mini-crib/-/A-14481653

We have a naturpedic mini crib mattress for it.

Our kid was in it until between 2 y 3 mo and 2 y 11 months when she finally really gave it up.   She is short for her age, about 10% for height

Since she is still short, and still has a tiny bedroom, I bought a secondhand toddler bed for her, and got a hand me down mattress from a friend.  I would not use that for a baby though.
