Chart Stalk / Coverline Question- UPDATE

ecmbecmb member
edited April 2015 in Trying to Get Pregnant
So I've read in TCOYF that the coverline's primary purpose is to help you distinguish between your pre and post ovulatory temps and patterns. I started temping on CD 11 of this cycle and I got crosshairs this weekend that have already shifted once- and they're dashed. When I look at others' charts on these boards and the charts illustrated in TCOYF it appears that most post ovulatory temps are significantly above the cover line (there's usually some buffer) but I have had two temps on the coverline.

So as I analyze my chart pattern compared to what I see in the book I wonder: 1) have I actually ovulated yet?, 2) do I simply not have enough temps on this chart yet?, 3) are post ovulatory temps on the coverline completely arbitrary despite not being illustrated in charts in the book?

In the book I've read about temps being above or below the coverline but not ON the coverline (that is unless it's in the part of the book I haven't read yet).

So what do you think, chart stalkers?

    BFP mentioned...

I actually have not read TCOYF so I don't know what it says in there but I can share my chart with you as I had a similar experience with my post-o temps being very near the coverline. In my case it turned out ok bc I got my BFP. I think I may also have a therm that likes to favor temps but in case this helps you, here's my chart.

I think you're ok, just keep temping and good luck :)

Edit: plus I noticed the two low temps have open circles, maybe something influenced them to be lower.

My temps aren't all that much higher than my cover line. I don't know what that means, really, but I just wanted to share. My chart is in my sig. if you're not mobile and want to compare.

ETA: the two that are on your coverline are open because your temps were taken at a different time than normal (I think the time has to exceed thirty minutes) or your sleep suffered that night and you marked it on your chart.

Yeah I noticed those open circles and I honestly have no idea why. I temped at the same approx time and didn't have any special notes.

  • Mine started just over the coverline, went higher, then dropped back down a bit ... and I got the BFP as well. And that's weird that you have open circles for no reason. Hmm. I'm interested to see what tomorrow's temp does for your chart.
  • Hmm... well, I wouldn't worry about it. I would just keep BDing every other day until you're confident  :)

  • I think my charts have been close to the cover line before too. I'm not very reliable because my first time charting with a bbt was after a mc so my chart was a bit wonky. My other charts I didn't use the right kind of thermometer so kind of useless. I think the general idea is to look at the "big picture" so don't worry about a couple low temps. I'm no expert so if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me!

  • Is this your first cycle temping? How do your theoretical Post-O temps compare to previous charts?  I could always tell when I O'd because my post-o temps were always within the same range.

This is my first cycle temping so unfortunately I have no history to compare. I'll keep temping and update y'all in a few days or so. Temping is fascinating to me and I'm still learning so I didn't know if my theoretical post o temps may be an indication that I actually haven't ovulated yet and my crosshairs may shift again.

Time will tell though! So I'll have to just wait of course... Ugh.

  • Your negative OPKs make me think you didn't O, but otherwise, I'd say you did because of your temps.  Were you only using OPks once a day?

I (think) I ovulate later bc I tend to have longer cycles so I started opk'ing (is that a word? haha) twice a day starting around CD14. Caveat: my OPKs were expired so they may not be that reliable. I also used a cbefm I got from someone but it was my first cycle using it so I got lots of highs but no peak. Today was my first day to get low.

  • I had very little luck with a CBEFM.  It was a PITA.  I just used the cheapie OPKs and a CBE digital opk to confirm when I still wasn't sure if I was reading the cheap opk right (plus, it's fun to see the smiley face).

And yes, OPKing is a word.  Haha.  At least here it is.

I tried clearblue non digi OPKs and never got a positive in previous cycles. I'll def keep trying different ones till I'm successful. My plan is to use OPKs with the cbefm (which I got from someone with the sticks so it can't hurt). Maybe my oh surges are super short? Who knows right??

That's definitely possible.  I liked the Wondo ones you can buy on Amazon.  100 opks with 25 HPTs for $8?  Yes, please!  (Pricing may have changed in the 3  years since I TTC'd. lol)  I actually preferred them to the in store ones (regardless of brand).

  • The coverline is just a visual aid. It's ok if some of your temps are on the line. Your post-o temps are clearly higher than your pre-o temps anyway.

Okay it's been 5 days, what are your thoughts on my chart now?

FF has readjusted my O date no less than 5 times total this cycle.  The crosshairs have also gone from dashed to solid and back to dashed.  This morning my temp dipped so I'll have to see if it continues to be low going forward.

Anyway, what would be your interpretation of my likely O date this cycle?  I think my temp on CD14 was a fluke but didn't want to discard it.  I don't think I conceived this cycle (I know one low temp can't tell me for sure) but I would still like to interpret my chart so that I can learn about my cycle and get an idea for my luteal phase length.

Thanks in advance, ladies!  Oh, and chart is in my signature.

  • I think it's possible you ovulated CD22, since CD23's temp is an open circle it could be artificially low or it could be that you have a fallback-rise pattern (one random temp drop after the spike).

If I'm right and it was CD22, that puts you at 8dpo. A temp drop at this point could mean your period is about to start and your luteal phase is short. It could also be that you've just had a random drop. Keep temping and see what happens. But I think you've definitely O'ed at some point.

Honestly, I think your chart is being thrown off by your fertility monitor. Your cm, cp and temps all line up for a cd 19 ovulation day. And I don't trust the Cbe advanced anyway. The high reading just means high estrogen and no LH peak...

I was thinking my secondary charting signs were throwing off FF.  Seeing as I've never gotten a positive LH test, I may just stop using them altogether.  I guess I could go in and remove the monitor readings and see if FF reevaluates?

At first I always tested with FMU around the time I would notice fertile CM.  This cycle I started testing twice day both with FMU and then after work.  I may have short surges that are difficult to catch or my water drinking could be affecting it.  Not sure.

By the way, I have removed all opk/testing results and FF promptly moved my O date to CD19 (just like you predicted!) though dashed.  It also shifted my coverline so that my temp dip from today is still above it.  Seriously, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help and give your two cents.

No problem! I'm addicted to chart stalking.

Anyway, the best time for opks is between 10 and 8. Would you be able to try around noon everyday? That is, if you care about opks.

Your lines are probably dotted just because of your one day of ewcm in the luteal phase.
