My understanding is that it's the same machine, but a biophysical profile is shorter than a traditional ultrasound. I asked my OB about it a few weeks ago and he acted like they were one and the same. (I also used the word "growth" ultrasound and he said that's just an ultrasound.)

  • BPP they are looking at fluid, heartbeat, reflexes, etc all things to make sure baby is doing ok in there. They score the baby a 1-8 scale. 8 being the best as the scores get lower it indicates that baby isn't doing to well in there and if it's at a lower number they will take he baby then. A growth ultrasound will take measurements of baby to give an estimate size, check fluid and heartbeat.

  • I have BPPS every week and like PP said, it's differs in the sense they are checking different things than a traditional u/s, such as practice breathing, gross motor skills, movement and amniotic fluid levels. ..they give up to 2 points for each category, the baby has 30 minutes to do all of the movements and practice breathing...with growth scans they take the measurements of the baby's head, tummy, femur bone and amniotic fluid levels and then crunches the numbers to give an estimated weight and estimated gestational age....
