Breastmilk in a bottle once baby has sipped

Sometimes I will make a bottle of breast milk for my dd and she will only have a couple of sips and then she's done. Can I save it in the fridge? I hate to waste breast milk and she is only 8 wks so sometimes we aren't sure if she is still hungry or not.

Re: Breastmilk in a bottle once baby has sipped

  • I was told to go by the 5-5-5 rule for how long breast milk stays good.

    5 hours at room temp
    5 days in the fridge
    5 months in the freezer

If you store it in the fridge, put it in the back, not on the door. It will separate in the fridge so warm it up before you serve and swirl it around to mix it back together. Don't shake it and don't microwave it.

If you freeze it and then thaw to use, it must be used within 24 hours.

  • But what about once the baby has already had some? Is it unsanitary or does it matter?
  • I haven't found an answer to this either. I've read both that it's ok and that it's not. I just go by smell - if it smells ok I give it to LO, if not, I toss it. Haven't had an issue yet!

  • Our pediatrician said to put a cap on the bottle, even if she's partially drank some, just to make sure it doesn't go bad. Though, once you put beeast milk, or formula, in a bottle to feed, it's best to use it within 24 hours I find. Otherwise its starts to separate and get weird I noticed. But we've been capping and storing partially drunk milk and formula since we started using a bottle part time; so 4-5 weeks or so now. And we always use ut within 24 hours, and she's been just fine. :-)
