Plus Size & Pregnant

Wondering if there are other plus-size moms to be in this group... Looking for resources and support! My doctor isn't too concerned (I'm 5'6" and 245 lbs.) but I am concerned about having a complicated/high-risk pregnancy and feeling guilty about not having lost more weight before getting pregnant.

Re: Plus Size & Pregnant

  • I'm plus size and over 35...so assume I'll be high-risk. I go to our first appointment Monday.

  • I am starting out larger than I would like. Im 5'4 and 165 lbs. Largest I have ever been. I started at 161 but gained some weight already. I hope is just water weight. Exercise and eat healthy. You'll be fine.

  • I'm am right there with you!!
  • I'm concerned myself! I have been cross fitting and running and eating right and I just lost like 15lb over the past two months! I'm high risk due to a miscarriage and I'm not aloud to do anything. I am 5'1 and currently 154 I've gained 3-5lb already and I have been eating everything. I am working on slowly returning to my diet.
  • I'm plus size.. Around 350lb, and 5'9.. Always been big, have had 3 relatively easy pregnancies previously.

Definitely need to eat better though!
  • I'm 5'6 and 220. I was 260 a year ago and really wanted to get to 200 before starting a family but am VERY happy that it happened :) Since becoming pregnant I have been so tired and sick and haven't worked out at all and have been eating what I can (which today was pizza
:P). I am high risk due to blood cots in my lungs as a teen, but my doctor doesn't seem concerned about my weight.

  • Have any of you ever had a MC before?
  • I am high risk as well due to weight (245), age (38), history of a blood clot last pregnancy and a miscarriage. I am a high risk ob's dream...or nightmare! Trying to stay positive this time around. Have my first u/s on Friday. Cross fingers!
  • I am 5'1 and 179. I lost so much right after having my first, I was down to 155 and slowly gained it all back (in 9 months...ugh) :( now I'm concerned because I really wanted a VBAC. Really trying to stay healthy so I don't gain too much.

  • I know it's early to need maternity clothes, but I've been looking around and can't find ANYTHING cute in plus-size! Everything seems baggy and shapeless that I've seen so far. Any suggestions for plus-size maternity clothes that won't break the bank??
  • My cousin gave me 3 bins of maternity clothes...she had a bit of a shopping problem! Target, Walmart, a local consignment store and old navy were my favorites... some things only fit until 7-8 months, after that I mostly wore elastic maternity skirts! I got a lot on clearance, never bought full price.

  • Oh and Kohls!

  • I'm 5'6 and 205. Exactly the same weight I was when I got pregnant with my first at 32. I was very active the entire pregnant and ended gaining only 20lbs. Never had blood pressure issues or issues with the pregnancy. I walked every single night on the treadmill at the gym for a minimum of an hour but don't have that luxury this time around working full time and having a two year old. My husband is buying me a treadmill so I can walk at home. It's the next best thing. I do highly recommend Pilates. I am doing that this time around and it's great.
  • I am less overweight with this preg than any other but still plus-sized. My weight has never caused any of the issues I have had in pregnancy. It caused issues getting preg, but not with the pregs themselves. The only remotely weight related issue I had was gest. diabetes but I also have PCOS with insulin resistance so I already was predisposed to it to begin with. I am considered high-risk but not because of weight. In fact after losing a great deal of weight I am actually higher-risk with this preg than with my others. Everyone's experience is diff but try not to worry to much. Big ladies have babies safely all the time.

  • This is my first pregnancy, and I too feel a little guilty that I didn't lose some weight beforehand, but I try not to worry too much about it. I'm barely a month and a half in, so it's comforting to hear from you guys and learn a bit from your experience :)
  • I'm 34 years old- 5'2 and just over 200. I went to see my obgyn 2 months ago for my annual and she told me she would really like me to lose weight before getting pregnant. I lost about 12, but got pregnant unexpectedly fast. I have my first appointment with her on the 27th. I am nervous. I also have a lot of diabetes in my family, so gestational diabetes is a real concern. I just read an article on the What to Expect App that linked gestational diabetes to autism. I am committed to eating healthy and keeping up with my Yoga and walking.
  • Target has cute maternity clothes in lots of sizes.
  • I am 5'5 and about 225. I was about 180 when I got pregnant the first time, but had a MC. I gained my weight back. I am only a risk due to that.

My cousin was about a 16-18 as well when she had her little girl. She found a lot on Zulily.
  • Yes, me too. 5'6" and 225lbs. My RE suggested I lose 55lbs before getting pregnant, but I only lost 15. I also have hypothyroidism, which I've had a difficult time keeping under control even without being pregnant- so I'm a little worried about that as well. But I'm very excited to just be pregnant!
  • This is also a big concern for me as well. I'm 5'6'' and 207. My blood pressure is already slightly elevated. I'm 5 weeks and am nervous for the months ahead. I'm going to try and avoid sugars & starches as much as I can and also get at least 30 minutes of exercise in at least 3 times a week. I REALLY don't want to pack on the lbs and also be at risk for pre-eclampsia.

  • I'm 5'6" about 230 lbs. 35 yrs old. I never got rid of the baby weight after having my DS who is now 17 months old (15 mos gestational age). I had a great pregnancy last time, no issues at all!! Up until week 33. My blood pressure was a little high 130/80, not too bad. My doc wanted me to come back in a couple days to check my BP and before I could come back my water broke at 34 weeks. I think I had him preterm because of high blood pressure but I'm not sure. After I had him I then got postpartum Preeclamsia. Since I weigh more this time I'm very nervous of this one possibly coming even earlier. I have no idea what's in store but I really hope this baby bakes much longer.

I'm glad to see other plus size Moms having healthy babies. It makes me hopeful that it's not a weight thing. That plus size doesn't mean high risk.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • I am in the same boat so very happy to see others like me! I'm 5'7" 200lbs and have been doing barre classes the last 2 months trying to lose weight - I literally only lost 1 pound. This pregnancy was a surprise - my hubs and I weren't going to start trying for another few months! I'm worried and hoping to not gain too much weight but also know here is only so much I can control - it's my first and I don't know how my body will react to pregnancy. Hoping to try swimming though!

I just want to comment two main points: babies come in their own time (as I have learned for myself) and swimming while pregnant is awesome, especially later in pregnancy.

I started out just under 190 with my first and gained 70 lbs during pregnancy. I lost 40 (I feel that was good for six months) and am already pregnant again (unexpectedly but happily). I'm sure I did several things wrong with my first but I don't regret a bit of it. I was exhausted for more of the first trimester and could hardly force myself to move to even go to the bathroom so exercise was unthinkable. I think past 20 weeks my energy picked back up and I actually felt great, would swim and feeling the baby move with me in the water was an incredible feeling. Plus when you have those *lovely* pregnancy aches and pains and get in the water and feel so light...I hardly wanted to get out of the water. Even just getting in and wading around the pool is exercise enough. Plus if you go to a pool where someone has a baby you get those exciting flashes of what your future can be like with your LO. Highly recommend trying it. OH! Plus it was the only time last summer I didn't feel like I was roasting.

LO was healthy last time though and I had no risks. My endocrinologist asked once if my OB was concerned about my weight gain. She wasn't so he never mentioned it again. My OB just always said I was healthy, moving, eating some healthy things and taking vitamins so some weight gain (while annoying later) didn't seem to be hurting anything. Personally, I felt it was worse for me when I was so worried about it. Once I let go of that stress things started going smoother. The only complications I had were asthma (but I had juvenile asthma so it was expected) and shoulder dystocia (baby was in an awkward position and wasn't actually a big baby so it's never been attributed to weight). I have PCOS and there were things we were watching for, gestational diabetes and thyroid issues mostly, but I was lucky enough not to have them.

On the other hand, I will offer up my mom's experience. She's always had, as she will put it, "weight struggles". She was plus sized with both my brother and I, and actually lost weight with both pregnancies. It wasn't a planned thing at all. She had more loss with me, said she attributes it to not being able to drink soda while pregnant (didn't tolerate it during that time) and just generally wanting healthier foods since she couldn't stand greasy, fatty foods either. She says she had to send my dad home for smaller sized clothes with me before she could leave the hospital because her pre-pregnancy clothes were falling off her. Now if we all could be so lucky! I was just happy three weeks PP when I could fit into "real" jeans (didn't care they were three sizes bigger than before).

My brother was born healthy, I was born healthy, my son was born healthy. Heck, my aunt gained at least seventy pound with each of her pregnancies and every single one was born healthy any without (weight-related) complications. Keep up with prenatal care and everything as you would normally for pregnancy, is my personal suggestion.
  • I'm 5'7 and 200lbs. Im just telling family now but I feel awkward how I have a belly and Im just 6wks so naturally it will take longer for the baby belly to show.

Much love and support to all the "Life Size Ladies" out there expecting :)

  • (40) and 234 5'7" 5th pregnancy and my last...I am type 2 high blood pressure, PCOS..so yes I am high risk as well. I had lost 50 lbs with in a year before this. My doc wasn't concerned with weight just my diabetes...EDD 12/16/15
  • I am 5'4 230. I haven't gained yet and I am 6 weeks 1 day. Do I have anything to worry about. HowuCH Should I gain. This is first child
  • I'm 5'7" and 235. I had a relatively easy pregnancy with my first and delivered my 10# 14 oz big guy vaginally. I saw a group of midwives and some were pissy about weight and some were not. I gained 25 pounds and lost it all within 6 weeks bf-ing. I am down from 257 at the start of my last pregnancy. I was considered high risk due to multiple miscarriages not size. Try to be nice to yourself and enjoy your pregnancy, no need to start on the mom-guilt yet, plenty of time for that later.
  • I am 5'10 and 257 lbs. I have PCOS, so to try to get pregnant I've been losing weight and lost about 40lbs but have a lot more to go. I wasn't expecting to get my BFP so soon after working with a new dr because we had been trying for 3 years with no results so I was hoping to lose a little more before pregnancy. But I've still been losing since I found I'm pregnant just by eating healthy, so I'm hoping to not gain much in the pregnancy, but we will see :) Is anyone else trying to lose weight during your pregnancy?
  • Not sure I'm exactly the response you're looking for but I appreciate this post. It's something I've been thinking about...
I'm about 30 pounds overweight. I haven't been to my obgyn yet (May 7) and I plan to ask her if she even recommends I gain any weight. I plan to keep walking throughout but I tried to elliptical the other day and had some cramps that made me nervous.

I've also been reading lots of stories of women who lose a bunch of weight after birth!
The important thing for me though is to cherish this time and try to keep my worrying to a minimum. I'm a believer that Baby feels some of the emotions I do so I want to have hope and excitement! I often tell him/her, "You can do it! Just keep going! Mommy's here!" LOL I'm probably a weirdo.

Just keep your chin up and dwell on good things, not things that could go wrong or things you didn't do. Praying for you!
