Enlarged kidneys?

Has anyone else had experience with LO having enlarged kidneys?

Because I'm considered "advanced maternal age," I've been going to a neonatologist this pregnancy. I'm 24 weeks today and went to see the specialist. She said DD's kidneys look a little enlarged and it could be nothing and go away on its own or be a soft marker for Down's. She gave me the Harmony blood test to test for Down's, but I have to wait about two weeks for results. Has anyone else had experience with this?

My quad screen came back normal and there's no history of Down Syndrome on either side of our families. DH isn't worried because there's no other indications of Down's in DD. I guess I'm just freaking out because here we are at 24 weeks and now this sh*t comes out. I thought we were in the clear. And no, it doesn't matter if she does have Down's. We will love and cherish her just like DD1!

Re: Enlarged kidneys?

  • Hi there, I had the same experience with my first son, 20 week scan showed enlarged kidneys which they also told me was a sign of downs. (He wasn't born with Down syndrome) It isn't uncommon for a scan to show enlarged kidneys and then next time normal, my consultant also told me at the time they could go back to normal on there own. My son is 2 now and still has an enlarged left kidney. He has high blood pressure but the consultants have mixed opinions on wether that is the reason or not. Either way, it's done him no harm and as far as we have been told he could grow out of it, if he doesn't it shouldn't affect him anyway. My friends little boy also showed enlarged kidneys at 20 scan but by 28 weeks they were normal. I've heard that in some cases they can just need a wee although I'm not sure that's fact! And apparently more common in boys. Please don't panic, I know it's easy to say as I did worry like mad, but I'm sure it won't be anything major especially as you have no history of downs in either families. X

  • Hi! I was in your shoes three weeks ago we went for our scan and we see a specialist because i am having twins and she told me our sons kidney had extra fluid in it and it was a soft marker for downs we had already done the blood test which came back normal I was offered a procedure where they would check the amino fluid but declined his left kidney was at a 7 and the cut off was 5 I was so worried and paranoid about it I googled it and stressed myself out. Today we had our follow up ultrasound and guess what it's correcting itself it went from a 7 to a 5 ! She explained that it is common about 1 in every 30 babies have this and it's rare that it doesn't fix itself in the womb.. Best of luck with you and baby I know it's hard not to worry in fact it's like impossible but just remain positive and please update me when you go for your next ultrasound!
